I was pleasantly surprised by episode 4 but

It DID hit comical levels for me. I almost laughed when
they showed Keiichi tearing up and that he was still alive. The profile shot of Rena stabbing him also looked kinda silly but overall I was impressed by the animation for that scene.
I didn't find it scary per say but it was well done and I'll give credit where it's due. I'm actually looking forward to what's in store now.
I saw that final scene coming as it's basically a throwback to the ending of Wataganashi-hen.

I won't lie, that shot reminded me of this fan-art.

Hetalia is getting another season for some reason. I thought that shit died years ago.
I'm actually happy about this because I greatly enjoyed the original series and was looking for an excuse to watch the later seasons to see if they're any good. I'm very curious to see how a dub for that would go because I have no idea if they'll keep it as offensive in both the jokes and exaggerated accents, especially since Funimation will likely be the one doing it.

It's also funny to look up reactions to the announcement, Tumblr is a mix of excitement from nostalgic fans and those hating on it for being "problematic" while the thread I found on /a/ was almost overwhelmingly positive (lots of shitposting around "FUJOCHADS I KNEEL") . My favorite part is reading everyone on twitter having a meltdown at Hetalia getting a new season and how anyone that likes Hetalia is every negative label under the sun. Doing some digging, there's actually a hashtag #ShutUpGringo2020 that is full of people shitting on people getting mad a Hetalia. My god, anitwitter is going to be even more of a shitshow than normal especially once the series actually releases. Almost entirely coming from western fans though, think Japan is really excited or at least could tell something was coming since it looks like the fandom never died out there like it did in the west.

They've also been releasing a steady stream of Hetalia nendos in 2020, everything besides Japan at the bottom have been released this year. Russia and America are both on Pre-order which likely means that once it gets closer to their release dates they'll be announcing some more for other characters of the show. So probably most Japanese fans could guess something was in the works with the sudden increase in Hetalia stuff being put out, this announcement just confirms their suspicions.

Does watching dubbed anime really make me worthy of suffering and death? I feel like it's a very gatekeeping opinion to have. I enjoy anime and honestly it's a lot easier for me to pay attention hearing English words, but I genuinely feel embarrassed telling others I wait for the dubbed versions of new animes to come out.

Jujutsu Kaisn - Yu Yu Hakusho but with <curses> and slightly darker tone. It's pretty fun and already had couple of characters with cool wacky powers. Hopefully the main character also gets a unique power rather than being the genre standard beatstick. My biggest gripe is that in the 3rd episode they spoil that a character is going to die in a few episodes, and considering the potential deaths are the MC, girl and slightly experienced older person, my money in on the latter.
This is from the original mangá release too. It's not actually a spoiler the way you assume it is.

No, Dub watchers don't deserve the freedom of death.

That embarrassment you feel is your consciousness telling you that dubs are shit. Deep inside your heart you know it's true.

I think watching dubs isn't bad if you're just getting into anime or are watching with people not into anime, but eventually most people go sub and stay that way. I only ever watch dubs if it's for a series I first watched dubbed years ago and it would sound weird for me to hear different voices or I'm sticking on an old series for background noise. For example, FMA was one of the first series I watched and if I were to rewatch it or Brotherhood I couldn't make myself watch the sub as in my mind I've already attached a specific "voice" to the character. Very rarely will I enjoy both a dub and sub of one series, it's either one or the other.

It's like how in Japan once a Seiyuu gets picked for a character they'll almost always voice that character in any other series made baring death or special circumstances. The new Fruits Basket series is an example where the author intentionally wanted to divorce it from the previous anime adaption and made sure it was an all new voice cast (interestingly Funi did the opposite).

Personally, I'm much more interested in the Japanese VA scene and keep up with who's doing what anime as a star-studded cast more endears me to checking out a series. It's also interesting to realize that sometimes there are gags specifically based around who is voicing a character based on past roles.

Now there's a blast from the past. Oh, to be in high school again! When all the fujoshits wanted to see a naval platform based micronation get anally devastated by much older men...

Hetalia's coming back? Nice.

The fandom was god-awful, but I'd be bullshitting if I said I didn't have some nostalgia for it

Wataganashi-hen
That's the first thing I thought of. Was sad that Rena didn't pop out from under the bed in a 'HERE'S JOHNNY' Moment.

Thank fuck it is gate keeping. You make it sound like a bad thing. I'll gate keep all day, every day to keep more normies out of fucking anime. You should be ashamed, because you secretly know its trash. People don't watch dubs of foreign films (because they're shit), why would you watch a dub of anime?

And you might be like 'But Asshole, this will make anime less popular!' Yes, I don't want it to be popular.

Nobody * actually * fucking cares. Dub vs Sub wars are retarded.

In fairness every fan starts out a normie.

But yeah I don't blame you for being hostile thanks to the current woke zeitgeist. * looks at the dumpster fire comics and the western VG scene became thanks to woke pandering *

Should I just read all Higurashi mangas? I have no shit towards what's happening, or is about to happen, but I have a feeling I'll like the mangas more. I also kinda don't wanna bother with going through all of the VN & other versions (I'll read about it, or watch some lore video on it).
I finally fucking did it. All main 8 arcs in 4 days. God, my head hurts. I'll bother later with the Manga special ones, Dice Killing, etc. My head hurts too much to go through more binging & I need a break.

I would say tho, as of the time writing this, I have yet to watch the 4th episode of the new series. But my god, it already feels cheap compared to the manga. It ain't a remake at all.

I care.
I'm a working-class Soviet Russian, I have always known travel or emigration was never in the cards. I learned English because my culture fucking died, leaving nothing but gangsters and whores, and I wanted to be part of a living culture. Whenever something I liked got popular in Russia and whores laid their hands on it ("voiced by your favorite pop stars! tee hee!"), the small dedicated fandom groups got swamped and buried by trendy and authoritative parasites.

I have watched the death of Anglo culture with 🌸🌸~~fascination~~🌸🌸. As Chris Avellone (press S) wrote, "When a thing seals itself against its own destruction, it merely dies a different death". It's something Marxists have never considered, they (we) were always harping about outside threats to a too-large, too-greedy, too-efficient corporation, not internal rot and decay. I have no sympathy at all, I admitted defeat in the culture war and formally surrendered and invested in you and you fucked me over. Eat shit, anglos.

I don'y go to Weeb Wars, I've seen all it before. Why hello there, your favorite character is now indelibly linked to a whore who guzzles cum by the gallon and sells her nudes to middle schoolers for a dollar a pop. Dubs don't just keep whores employed, they let them smear a living culture with their filth. Don't watch dubs.

The problem is that what you're listening to is the dub writer's fanfic. Especially when it comes to funimation dubs where they will gladly shove in their political opinions.

Yen Press translated Keiichi's inner monologue as he's plotting the perfect idea to kill Satoko's uncle without being caught, and it's terrifying. Very hard read due to formatting and insanity.

This.

An interesting experiment to do is leave English subtitles on while listening to a dub. What they're saying and the translation are often WILDLY different. Especially for recent series. You also tend to lose a lot of interesting cultural context and if you watch subs enough times you basically learn familiar phrases and you can discern how context influences the text. Its a lot more interesting than watching a dub, where I have to rely on Western trash who use a dub to insert their ideas and get 'creative'. Nigger, I'm not paying you to get creative. I don't WANT you to get creative. Translate the thing as close as possible. But they don't. Because they're fucking completely obnoxious.

From simply watching a ton of subs I've picked up common phrases and often dubs will change them, completely unrelated to what is being said. I don't watch anime for it to be Westernized. So yes, I will gatekeep the fuck out of it and are very glad dubs take forever to come out. I'm also glad the dubs use shitty writers separate from the subs so they don't infect it. And if they do, there are always fansubs I can download. Fandubs are exceedingly rare these days.

Depends on the subs though, A-lot of fansubs are guilty of changing dialogue to make it sound more "badass" * making characters swear like sailors *.

Personally I don't mind a dub westernizing certain aspects of the work to make it more understandable to Americans.* giving a Kansai speaker a Texas drawl for example since that's our closest equivalent *

I'm reminded of this old meme (I think most of the sub groups mentioned don't even exist anymore):

I love the comparisons, but the problem is that anytime I hear "itadakimasu" in an anime, I instinctively think "rub a dub dub."

Anyway, my two cents: subs are superior, but I don't get mad about dubs. It's better to enjoy media in its intended language, to be sure, but not every dub is complete garbage. If they bastardize the translation, throw in shitty localizations, or flat-out rewrite shit to throw in references to the translators' pet peeves, then you should definitely drop it. But if it's a faithful translation with good voice actors, then there's no sense being ashamed that you enjoy the dub. Plus, if you're attempting to show something to a friend who might not be super into anime, a dub is an easier sell than "you mean I have to read while I watch this?" Far better to work towards subs than throw someone into the deep end from the start. Besides, I'm sure the majority of us here started out with dubs, and there's no shame in that.

I get the gatekeeping angle, and I certainly don't want more dangerhairs screwing up one of my favorite sources of entertainment. I just don't like writing off dubs wholesale just because some are objectively bad. Support the good dubs and call out the bad. It might not help, but I don't think it can hurt.
