mawaru penguindrum, it's a very surreal show about two brothers trying to save their sister from a fatal illness after she gets possessed by a penguin hat. it's hard to discuss without spoilers but strong recommend for any Monogatari fans. it has a similar kind of mastery over avant garde approaches to animation+story telling as Monogatari despite being in a totally different style. if people know the hanging doll scene from Evangelion there are a couple moments in Penguindrum that have the same vibe. that along with the depiction of the siblings relationship and how it came to be so strong got me

Bunny Girl Senpai was the other one that came to mind. the show is definitely guilty of some melodrama but the final story arc centering on the sister was very good and bittersweet.

If you're looking for depression manga PunPun is probably the most infamous (I also wholeheartedly rec Subarashii Sekai by the same guy). Koe no Kitachi (A Silent Voice) is one of the best about a kid trying to atone for being a real piece of shit as a child. 9 Centimeters Per Second is good too.

In terms of depressing moments in non-depressing series almost nothing tops Wolfwood's death in Trigun

Anyone got some good recommendations for some psychological horror anime similar to Naoki Urasawa's Monster? I've seen Psycho-Pass and enjoyed that just as well, and both of these shows were equally good in their own right but I've had trouble finding many shows like it. Shows that don't have special powers (within reason, death note comes to mind as okay) and just have crafty heroes facing down crafty villains. Villains that are smart, or are just "powerful" in the way that Johan was powerful with incredible charisma and intelligence are super interesting to me and I want to get into something else like it. The idea of essentially "neutral evil" villains are also really interesting, rather than DBZ tier "I'm going to destroy the world look at me go" villains. Antagonists play a massive role in stories, at times more than the protagonists. I say shows because I think music plays a large part in stories like these and even if the art is inferior I think the experience is better. I would say something similar to Death Note, but a lot of the "smart" plots and schemes just seemed like contrived bullshit and it didn't feel like my morals were being challenged.

Maybe it's just growing cynicism but I've noticed many new shows don't have tropes like this. I haven't seen a single show that has come out in the last 5 years that felt like it was truly creepy or morally ambiguous. I might just be ill informed but that trope in shows seems to be unfortunately fading which is a total shame. If there aren't any shows, I can work with some manga but it's highly preferred.

Neither are quite strictly "horror" but they're definitely mind benders with creepy moments.

Cool, you're in for a treat, it's both a great series and despite being from 2004 is actually very relevant for today's world.

after the rain will forever hold a special place for me since it introduced me to aimer. winter 2018 in general was an incredible season, with a place further than the universe and violet evergarden (and way too many others to list them all)
I still need to watch your lie in april, I want to eat your pancreas and anohara to get emotionally destroyed, and mates recommend me clannad every time the topic comes up. there's also rainbow which doesn't feature any cute girls at all, so might be interesting for people not into the usual setup.

higurashi and the promised neverland are both good psychological horror. higurashi is probably closer to what you're looking for but neverland is also very good
 
I don't know who casually brought up Death Party/Parade/Billiards here, but I want to thank you. The OP made me curious enough to try it, and I wound up binging the entire season over the weekend.

The writing is solid, the animation is beautiful, and the music and direction are fucking gorgeous.


This is by far the emotional climax of the show. I would highly recommend it to anyone even passingly curious.

Also, Decim's bar is one of the classiest places I have ever seen, in fiction or out.
