I heard the argument that Oda did this design to fuck with people who thought that One Piece was a super serious battle shonen because he stopped putting as much slap stick in it post time skip and I hope it's true because their tears sustain me.
I read up to the part where Luffy fights a guy with mochi powers and a giant fat woman goes on a rampage because she wants to eat cake. How can anyone read this and think the manga is super serious?

It's both..usually at the same time.

Silly Mochi power man...portrays himself as the most serious badass to prevent anyone from going after his weaker siblings after one got attacked by people he beat the shit out of before..but is really Hedonistic Goofball whose main wish is to eat Doughnuts and Drink tea..but he can't ever let any of that show from fear of his facade of perfection being broken.

Dude needed a vacation.

Probably a dumb idea, but there's no fucking way I'll ever see any of the second half of the Maison Ikkoku DVDs go below a couple hundred dollars. Randomly thought of looking up volume 5's availability and someone's selling one for 200 bucks exactly on Amazon. Might as well make this be my Christmas gift.

I remember someone pointing out that with the anime, its kind funny that the power up for a rubber man is to be animated in the old rubber hose style from the 1920s-30s, but I pretty sure that's just a coincident.
Does make me wonder when oda decided to make the gum gum fruit more then what they say it is, because after rereading the first 12 volumes I don't think any of the late series revelations are even hinted at.

The episode coming up for SxF is probably gonna be one of the best in the series. I was unfortunitely spoiled on some bits of it, but that's how I know. Yuri gets his ass beat. Loid gets his ass beat. Fiona beats someone's ass. And we might get to see Yor's solar halo like she's a Byzantine empress. In all seriousness though, Loid getting his ass beat is gonna be a bigly humanizing moment for him in the eyes of people who probably think he is too "Mr. Perfect". And story-wise it has some good self-reflection and shows a vulnerable spot within Loid, in that he could not kill Yuri in the field because he knew Yuri's death would devastate Yor. It adds some nice depth to the whole situation, and if you haven't been keeping up with SxF this season now is the time to binge it.

Update: the Sanda manga wrapped up and I just got around to finishing it, which I wasn't in a hurry to do because it sucked. In the end, as it turns out, it still sucks.

There's not much revelations re: it being super important early, eventually it comes out that it's important and the world government really wanted it and were intentionally spreading misinfo on it. I think Oda did always portray it as not-exactly rubber-physics and something cartoony or at least playing with the idea of rubber in a cartoonish way. Of course, you can read most of the paramecia as pretty loose on the physics of whatever they are supposed to do so it wasn't super obvious at the time.
