Pretty sure most people might disagree, but I think subs won hands down online, but is more up in the air elsewhere. Although that might be the only place that matters to most people here tbh
Almost every online site where you can talk about anime prefers sub over dub, but I saw an article recently that claimed a lot more people are watching stuff in dubs and doing some digging it seems to be mainly from normies just getting watching stuff on second monitors, doing chores, etc. and I'm not sure if this better or worse then some people who watch anime at 2x speed
And even if said normies start getting more into anime beyond a background noise I highly doubt they'll bother have much off a presence online since the big difference between then and now is back then the only place to talk about anime where on incredibly niece and often highly opinionated weaboo forms who I can recall one or two that had a rule where if you didn't watch 10 specific shows or have a dozen detailed reviews on mal, you weren't a real anime fan, and it wouldn't take long for it to rub off on a little you for better or worse. Now normies can see a show is popular in their feed, watch it, maybe recommend or complain about it to a friend or coworker, then move on to a completely new show if not form of media for a few weeks completely oblivious to the wider online discourse around a show.

Villaness Isekai have always just been about a girl who's quirky and misunderstood OR just framed by the real bitch OR was supposed to be evil in the narrative but wound up in a reverse harem with the magic of not being a cunt. I can't think of one where they are legitimately a threat to society, even justifiable revenge arcs are rare.

I'm just passing through but that isn't what happened.

What happened is that the Japanese companies got more directly involved with the translation process and made mandates regarding dubbing and subtitle translations.

The problem is that the people asking for these mandates do not speak English and didn't understand why what they were requesting wouldn't work in practice.

Too bad. Do what we want or the license is pulled.

The ourboros began to eat itself once anime and manga became too mainstream.

Daman Mills is all "CHANGE IT OR I WILL NEVER WORK FOR YEW AGAINNNNN!!!!" and he's going on and on about how difficult voiceover is especially vocally. Which is ironic considering he sucks cocks.

They are not going to dub Banana Fish. It's fucking Amazon. It should have remained a sub only show. (Also the anachronisms are irritating imo)

People actually pay money to watch this shit!? There is no emotions behind the voices. You cant tell if a character is happy, angry, sad etc without seeing the scenes play out, because its just a machine reading lines without understanding the emotions its suppose to convey.

While I have no doubt gooners goon to it (as they goon to everything) it is primarily for other women and I only remember it being for straight couplings. Best guess is that the villainess in Otome games are more fun characters that tend to meet horrific bad ends, while the heroines tend to be boring and passive and not very intriguing. So a genre started of catering to that female niche.

I know this happened with Evangelion after Rebuild 3.0's first English cut was screened, I just don't know when it was this became a more widespread practice—was it when Netflix decided to get into the dubbing game? I also know that Revolutionary Girl Utena was one of the rare times back in the day the Japanese director had an actual hand with the dubbing process, and it sounded pretty decent from what I remember (might have been just for the movie, though I think he stepped in after the first 12 episodes got dubbed and then it went on hiatus). Think there were a few video games back then that did this as well. So it was always a crapshoot.

In terms of new blood, I remember FUNimation trying to raise up a new generation of VAs in the first half of the 2010s. I actually liked the dubs for The Devil is a Part-Timer, Akiba's Trip and Blood Lad, and was looking forward to hearing those new voice-actors in the future—but they never improved past that even though they still have roles to this day. That stagnation was honestly disappointing, and it's only gotten worse since then. The Prison School GamerGate line and Weeb Wars may have drawn the curtain back on what was going on, but the #OwnVoices shit I believe was the death knell, and there's no way to reverse this without blacklisting all the currently-active voice-actors.

Usually it's somewhat like a normal isekai. A hikikomori/busy high schooler/office lady has something happen to her (almost always extra vague) and ends up in a female Dating Game but gets dealt a bad hand and is the villianess and has to manipulate the plot with her knowledge of the setting and/or grow as a person and come out of her shell to assert herself to avoid getting lynched/exiled and winds up with a reverse harem along the way. They throw out most of the tropes isekai drowns in (powerscaling, introducing anime Europe to rice/soy sauce, overcoming previous life problems) and usually end up as a Cute Girl Doing Cute Things Anime but with a sexless reverse harem. There are sometimes passionate female friends but the Japanese audience outside of shippers interpret those relationships as platonic.

Wow that was absolutely atrocious. How the fuck did that get approved for release? Though I will admit that seeing the niglet get shot and the emotionless "no skipper" and "come on skipperrrrr" was definitely lol worthy.

90s and early 2000s Hentai English dubs also had atrocious voice over work. It's as if the studio literally hired people off the street, and offered them Taco Bell to read off some lines in an animated porno.
