I like the first movie a lot but it's kind of fucked up how in the manga Motoko, Batou, Togusa, and the Chief are all shown to have the ability to turn it off when not on duty but because of the influence of Mamoru Oshii's SUPER SERIOUS take on the source material they all end up various levels of humorless operators in all future adaptations (and the sequels to the manga).
They do have their moments of levity but it's far less overtly comedic than the source material. In my view it works pretty well once you acclimate to it. It's a subdued tone you rarely see in the medium which makes it stand out in a highly positive way. I imagine it may be more jarring if you're coming from the source material, though.

I'm interested to see how the upcoming Science Saru adaptation handles it. Given what we've seen thus far it looks like they're taking it in a much more colorful direction, which tells me they be leaning closer to the manga tonally.

Its hard to take ItsAGundam rants on anime fandom seriously when he also only watch mainstream hits and shounen slop like everyone he complains about. Even his tastes in Gundam anime sucks.
What are his tastes in Gundam?

I love Papa Gundam, but I do agree he's got pretty normie takes on anime. Jujustu Kaisen and the like, but he does preach how amazing Berserk is and he shat hardcore on Witch of Mercury; that's A-OK by me.

He's a great commentator in that he knows when to not give takes on shit he knows nothing of but yeah his tastes in weeb shit is pretty basic even liking Berserk is pretty normie now. I honestly wish he would do more Gundam take downs like his G-Witch video but he said he wasn't interested in watching GQUUUUUUX and drama slop just does better overall.

Gonna be honest, I like it better when he talks about culture war stuff and then anime is relevant to the discussion. Like when twitter "discovered" Berserk, and then he talked about it because of that.
I definitely don't want Gundam review videos. I liked the Witch video because of how utterly bullshit woke it was and he pissed off all the right people with it and showcased the sheer lunacy.
The only Gundam series I ever liked was G Gundam, so I can say my interest in Gundam/Gunpla content is at the bare minimum. There's a reason I'm not subbed to "It'saGunpla"

He's a huge Unicorn and 08th fag and has an entire video circlejerking 0083. So more or less a tryhard UC fag who has only seen the OVAs.
War in the Pocket is the best OVA. Stardust Memory is good because Kou gets fucked and you see that everyone is a bastard, well besides the hard core Zeon guys who you can respect for being openly kinda insane rather than plotting a conspiracy to kill millions.

And the animation is so damn respectable.
Wish it was true, but Japan's "the bitch of America's fiat debt system" economy has led to numerous companies being gobbled up by Finks. Even legendary ones over the years have cucked out for crumbs to make slop (trigger, gonzo, Madhouse, production IG etc.). The coming 2008-2: Electric Boogajew collapse is gonna see more bending the knee to (((western media monopolies))) just to stay afloat. Look at a company like Nintendo and their pokemon games/anime, the shit is blacker than the nastiest Botswanan asshole. Is it because the majority of their customer base is sub-saharans? Of course not, but they want to be the new Disney and they will nigger everything and everyone just for a chance at that money. "Western shit in anime" used to mean Ken listening to Alice in Chains in the Street Fighter movie, cool inoffensive stuff... nowadays western shit in anime means poor L from Death Note 2017 gets nigger'd. I pray E;R is wrong...

However, people should understand how prolonged economic death/greed makes people of all stripes sell themselves and even their own culture to the (((lowest bidder))). I rejected things like Handmaid's Tale (have no sex propaganda) and embraced things like Spy x Family (have sex propaganda) for a reason. I hope the nips have the sense not to let their shit get fucked up like the west was.

He's posing as a tryhard. An OG tryhard would put Zeta above almost everything. I doubt he watched things like X or Victory.

Wise words, my friend. I also put The Origin OVAs very high on my list.

do we think the steel ball run anime will be good? netflix really ruined all the momentum jojo had it was inescapable when part 5 was airing, if anything hopefully it filters out the tourists I'd just like to see part 8 animated before the dementia kicks in
I have no reason to think it won't, I've liked every part adaptation they've made. I also don't give a crap if they release it in a batch or whatever, that's the stupidest complaint people had about Stone Ocean. In fact it would be even better, honestly, so I wouldn't have to wait a week between each episode.

I am a big proponent when it comes to adhering to the source material, but when it comes to GitS I am a bit of a hypocrite here. The super serious tone of the first movie is just perfection. Not only when it comes to the work of Section 9 but also regarding all the philosophical meanderings. That's why it is so captivating to me, pure unadulterated suspension of disbelieve.
See, I just think it's sort of a disservice to the characters. Manga Motoko has relationships outside of work with her GFs she takes VR chat vacations with and her boyfriend, lots of old contacts from her more espionage-related days, et cetera. Batou has a lot of manosphere hobbies with guns and cars beyond just what he needs to know for his job and a fatherly relationship with both rookies and the fuchikoma. Togusa dotes on his wife and kid and tries to fit them into his life work balance with his super serious job with a super Japanese schedule. All that stuff gets massively toned down in all of the non-manga depictions. While maybe it's fine because unlike a lot of anime it has a lot to say and doesn't need to be carried by the wacky personalities of the cast it still makes them more one dimensional and that's unfortunate.

I think it's alright to cut out all the reaction image panels for the sake of a more serious tone but I'd like them more as characters if I thought they actually existed outside of Section 8 in the anime adaptations.

I understand your grievances and agree that the characters are not really characters at all, but just vehicles to drive the narrative and serious subject forward. But I think it was a sensible decision to cut out any sort of personality from the characters since it would have been difficult to establish all the characters with all their motivations, hobbies, idiosyncrasies etc. within the runtime in such a way that they become believable not just stereotypes. I also think that the way the philosophical components are presented would have worked less with typical characters, since I would argue that the movie presents its subject almost like a textbook with quotes and opinions from different professionals and experts. The story is also quite simplistic but is well intertwined with the questions that the movie ponders. Any attempt to deviate from how the movie turned out would have been a detriment to its quality.

Not sure if you explicitly mentioned it, but what about Stand Alone Complex ? I think it struck a good balance and managed to reflect the source material better than the movie. Or was the characterization still lacking in your opinion ?

I'll never forgive how the Netflix show had him lose his family he almost died protecting in the second Stand Alone movie, for no particular reason other than "fuck you white man!"

Stone Ocean deserved the same discussion and hype as the previous parts did for their JoJo Fridays, and Netflix dumping it into three batches hurt that. They've been doing weekly drops now, they should realize their mistake and let Part 7 be weekly, too.

What is the story behind this?
I read this:

Automaton West: “No interference in creative works.” Japanese government proposes new policy for anime and game expansion in the West (archive)
The “Five key principles of the Entertainment and Creative Industries Policy” are listed as follows:
  1. Large-scale, long-term strategic support
  2. Support efforts to spread Japan-made content to the world
  3. No interference in the content of creative works
  4. Provide direct support
  5. Prioritize those willing to take a challenge

And determined that it means that the Japanese government will not interfere in creative works (anime, games, etc.) that it provides funding (or tax incentives or other benefits to), amid a push to expand distribution of Japanese creative works in overseas markets. The five points are talking about what the Japanese government can do, not protecting creative works from woke/tranny localizers. Japanese government interference isn't typically considered a big problem, unless you count smut censorship I guess.

If my interpretation is wrong, I'd like to know what it really means.

Finished reading Diamond is Unbreakable yesterday. Initially when I watched the anime years ago I was feeling a bit more negative towards it, but now having read if I might even put it above Battle Tendencies. A bit disappointed that the entire thing isn't just a slice of life, following JoJo and his friends through their daily lives and antics. What there is already works pretty well, with Stands and "Battles" without any real stakes. I think a lot of Stands having no real combat purpose or only in a roundabout way was a good evolution of the Stand battle system. The nonsense is enjoyable to witness. Don't know if the art will get any better than this, it's excellent, but this has never been Araki's weakness. The main antagonist just becoming that by accident is a good idea, and not having any world threatening stakes was a nice change of pace.

There are of course some negatives. The justification for the fourth JoJo is a bit farfetched, even if it is not as bad as Part 5. It was cool to see three generations of JoJo's at once, but the interactions are quite limited and with no real character development. Joseph especially was just background decoration for the most part. Not sure how I feel about the final confrontation, but it certainly was better than its predecessors. Araki doesn't have a good grasp on violence and death, it always feels cheap.

Now it's time for Golden Wind. I hated the anime, I only expect the manga to make it slightly more bearable. It would be a big surprise if my opinions changes dramatically after reading it. Don't know if I will rush through it, since I am kinda curious about Stone Ocean.
