They do have their moments of levity but it's far less overtly comedic than the source material. In my view it works pretty well once you acclimate to it. It's a subdued tone you rarely see in the medium which makes it stand out in a highly positive way. I imagine it may be more jarring if you're coming from the source material, though.I like the first movie a lot but it's kind of fucked up how in the manga Motoko, Batou, Togusa, and the Chief are all shown to have the ability to turn it off when not on duty but because of the influence of Mamoru Oshii's SUPER SERIOUS take on the source material they all end up various levels of humorless operators in all future adaptations (and the sequels to the manga).
I'm interested to see how the upcoming Science Saru adaptation handles it. Given what we've seen thus far it looks like they're taking it in a much more colorful direction, which tells me they be leaning closer to the manga tonally.
