I really do miss hearing accents in dubs, they were pretty charming. I've recently been thinking back to Nerima Daikon Brothers where Luci Christian puts on a southern-belle accent for Mako, since she has an Okayama dialect in Japanese, though apparently they were considering Cajun at first, but Luci obviously couldn't do it.

I kinda wonder what was the last dub to have an accent since they've fought rabidly to discontinue that practice. If a voice-actor just has a natural accent, that works, too.
Off the top of my head, They gave one of the side characters is Komi an Appalachian/Southern accent and I think I remember hearing something about the dub giving some characters in Hokkaido Gals a Minnesotan/Canadian accent, I think those also played up the "old english" speak in the Spice and Wolf remake more then the original but I don't think that counts.

I haven't watch a lot of dubs in recent years so I can't tell if these are all outliers or not, the only time anyone mentions a dub nowadays is if it does something stupid that pisses people. If its just mediocre to passible few people online give a shit, and the people who do watch new anime dubs I'll say aren't really the type to argue about chinese cartoons on the internet.

I'm reading Grappler Baki and I think it might have been written by an alien who has only sorta heard about humans second-hand but wanted to write a realistic martial arts story regardless. (A realistic martial arts story where one of the most pivotal events in the protagonist's life is fighting bigfoot.)

A mercantile/exploration video game where you delve for artefacts and exchange them for better gear to then delve further
There's a game like that and I thought it was pretty good. Janky but worth checking out. MiA: Binary Star Something Something.

Just don't read the reviews because it's full of whiners who can't handle pressure and don't realise the game actively fucks with you at points to trick you into some dramatically bad situations and this is 100% intentional. But do rush through the dogshit long-ass story recap/tutorial as quickly as possible--don't waste time collecting shit or exploring until you've got a custom delver. And remember that an expedition's success is pretty much decided by how you pack your bags before you depart (ie, always carry a shitload of salt).

New Kagurahachi chapter, I much do like the fight scene I can recognize the reused panels, but I respect hokazono for reusing for the better panels. I gotta respect the granddaughter for using big ass swords just for spite. Atleast the mexican guy showed up, I can't wait for next week's chapter where he actually fights New Centuria Chapter. I can't believe they flashbacked to angvall it seems like years since we last saw her. Oh. shit, is she gonna be revived as one of the rapist dyke minions. I would say arkvos getting a 30 second nuke every day is kinda bullshit I wonder how julian will best him probably gonna lose 20 of his lifes. New ichi the witch chapter The recordkeeper i couldn't care much for her since she's just the intern but damn that story was midly sad. Nvm the manga stated her name twice so i can remember it. A living rug plays ace attorney for the first time. I wonder when the mangaka will draw ichi uglier instead of le pretty boy New Sakadays chapter. Wow, this is a first lu actually doing something. I'm glad this is a heisuke chapter, he usually is the best written assassin of the store. RIP HYO HE HAD THE BEST FIGHT WITH HEISUKE. Heisuke is kinda like the superman of sakadays super hope pilled. I love the wrestling guy shame hes a jobber and will unfortunately die or smth

You're giving me another excuse to shit on the new Green Gables anime so I will. The put on "canadian accents" CR is doing don't sound good at all, and they aren't even consistent. Accent isn't even the right word, it's more like everyone talks normally but whenever someone says "about" they'll awkwardly say "Ab00000t". It sounds so forced. Meanwhile the old dub featured pre-genocide White South Africans doing British accents and it's beautiful. I'm not sure if old canadians actually sounded like that, but it sells the Victorian era so it works for me. The only other anime I've seen that does accents that well was Emma, which came out relatively recently, and which I've spoken about previously.

If they wanted to be accurate with accents for Anne they would of tried to do a Maritime accent, which to roughly explain it since most of the settlers to places like Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island where largely Scottish and Irish, the particular accent has a bit of quirks from those two languages mixed in to the normal Canadian accent.
Also fun fact, there's a language school in Japan called the Anne Academy in Fukuoka that tries to teach japs the PEI accent because along side it sounding a bit different the the standard American or Canadian accents, they like to throw in words only found there, from what I remember I think a few where in the book, but I know both anime versions avoided those like the plague.

Did the Philippines seriously broadcast Cowboy Bebop at a time slot children could come across it?
Oh man, that's tame.

They were broadcasting a kooky version of Neon Gensis Evangelion on Italian television back in the day, with lots of the Christian imagery and violence/sex badly edited out, as part of the Bim Bum Bam block on Italia 1. Mind you, this was a block that was also broadcasting DBZ, Saint Seiya and Sailor Moon. Now imagine adding NGE to that lineup.

I wish I could dig up an old (now going on 20 years) blog that had side-by-side comparisons of the edits, but it seems to have been lost to time, as has most of the information about the travesty.

What's weird is that they were also showing Lupin the 3rd and the Rose of Versailles (including the scene where the protagonist gets her top ripped off, exposing her breasts) during lunchtime, when kids were at home eating, so I guess Italians were just built different.

Lupin the 3rd did have a pretty great OP in Italian:

And while we're on the topic of foreign OPs for anime, the German one for Golden Boy beats the Japanese original hands down:

So, for anyone who's watched Black Clover, I have an important question for you all. HOW? I keep getting to this point in the first episode every time I try it, and this fucking faggots voice makes me want to punch my screen out.

Late, but I think most people would agree that dub is the way to go with BC, primarily due to Asta's VA. The original is more than a bit grating, especially when yelling, which is a problem because that's Asta's default volume. The dub voice is high enough to be shonen protagonist, but deep enough to not get on your nerves as badly.

That said, the first few episodes are definitely the roughest, but things pick up quickly after that. If you can stick it out that long, your reward is one of the better shonen series to come out in recent years; it really says something about it when I legitimately can't think of a single character I dislike from it, especially ones I probably would. It ain't groundbreaking, but it's unapologetically what it is, and sometimes that's all you need.

tbf Evangelion was aimed at young teens in Japan. It originally aired at 6:30 PM on TV Tokyo. For reference, the last few things to air in the exact same timeslot before it were the Japanese dubs of Batman the Animated Series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Tiny Toons, and the some of the next things to air in that same timeslot after it were Speed Racer, Transformers Beast Wars, Shaman King, Bomberman Jetters, and Yu-Gi-Oh!.

I'm actually surprised this is getting an anime since last I checked it was on the borderline in Jump of not being popular enough to be considered a hit but not unpopular enough to get the axe (previous members arguably included Undead Unlucky and Yorakuza Family).
I enjoy the manga a bit, but I don't think the anime will do that well both with japs and weebs since it's actually kinda rare to see a character perform a full rakugo story and often relies on stylized panels and spreads to show how a performer is seen by the audience. But this might end up backfiring with japs if the VAs can't do a convincing rakugo performance to go along with it, especially with how the first chapter played out.
With weebs, it's a case of rakugo being niche even among anime fans and needing something else to hook people in. Rakugo Shinju had the historic drama element, Joshiraku had CGDCT, Akane Banashi doesn't have either. Might put it in the same bin as something like The Great Passage (which ironically Akane is being done by the same studio) which was about a guy trying to track down the most obscure kanji and readings to make a new kanji dictionary, and seemed to be only popular with people who make their own custom anki decks.

I dislike the new Centuria chapter. Arkos and Atlus are tiring. The only thing I could like is revived Angvall killing all of them because she remembers getting killed and Awakens a blessing. Arkos was better off dead and his character isn’t going to improve. Dyke necromancer is fun, but you need something to humble and irritate those kinds of characters. Otherwise they just smugly smug all the time.

I've lived in Canada for nearly all of my life and I don't recall hearing anyone ever pronouncing "about" as "aboot" unironically. That's except for maybe J.J. McCullough on Youtube who does say "aboot" but I'm not convinced that he isn't just playing up the Canadian stereotypes for foreign audiences.

The Canadian accent, beyond the retarded Quebecois dumb dumb French, is an invention of SCTV. Norm MacDonald, Rick Moranis, Dan Akroyd, Martin Short, Mike Meyers, and most of the kids in the hall never had one. It’s indistinguishable from a Midwestern accent.

The Maritimes did have a bit of Gaelic influence, but that’s faded.

I’ve been watching the original Berserk anime from 1997. It’s the first Berserk anime I’ve ever seen, (I’ve read the manga), and I’ve really been enjoying it. The animation can look a little bad at times but oddly enough I think the slightly cheap look actually captures the gritty atmosphere of the manga. I think the soundtrack and voice acting is amazing too.

Also, it’s still hilarious that the studio behind Berserk also released the original Pokémon anime in the same year.

After finishing Baki the Grappler I'm starting to think this Yujiro guy isn't a very good father

Just a hunch

Modern anime becoming mainstream underlines how fucking consoomer brained people have become. I read all of 3 manga before going back to anime thinking "damn, this is 10 hours of subpar mimicry of the source material and it moves at 10 pages every 20 minutes". It's one big, long marketing move.

"Wow, this manga hits hard. It's about adulthood, depression and sourness. The anime must be great!"
>All soul is gone and yet people love it

More along the lines of the businessmen and authors are realizing what parts of anime sell the most, so they focus on it.

Tits, asses, explosions, robots, shonen protagonists who can pancake Superman, more Isekai than copies of Skyrim that have been sold, the works.

When it comes to manga and anime tackling adult themes, at the end of the day, said themes are icing on the cake. The real cake that people give a shit about is the action and fanservice. Big O, for instance, had a lot of deep character moments and themes, but at the end of the day, you tune in to watch the big-ass robot pound the crap out of the enemy. Same thing with Gundam; for all of Tomino's talk about the horrors of war and the pollution of the Earth, the people tune in to his series to watch robots blow the crap out of each other in Star Wars-style dogfights and lightsaber battles.

Something like DBZ is kind of refreshing; in that they don't pretend there's any deeper meaning to what's going on, it's just Übermenschen blowing each other up and slugging it out, with a bit of comedy and T&A on the side.
