Sony in talks to buy manga and game publisher Kadokawa (archive)

Could be a disaster for a huge chunk of the manga market, as well as some anime. I focus on the manga.

Here are some they have published:
Only thing I could see stopping the deal would be anti trust laws.

But Sony doesn't own manga publishers. So that's fucked already. I guess it could be fought on the video game side, but, that doesn't look promising either. We're fucked.

Kadokawa has been garbage anyway. That said, this is the time more than ever to get physical copies of your favorite titles of theirs now lest they go out-of-print or forcibly memoryholed for not being up to Sony's stupid standards. Go secondhand if you have to. Should this deal go through, it's done for and it's better for it to get run into the ground and bankrupt by the consumerbase telling them to go fuck themselves.

Also, aren't there international laws against private companies breaching the sovereignty of a foreign nation's law on expression (wherein the subject material is also fully legal in said country)? This is some scary stuff.

If they own the studios, they can do literally anything. Its their company bro. I guess Japan could intervene, but if not, which is what WILL happen... eh. Nothing would happen likely. Sony would just do whatever the fuck they want.

Maybe the talented people will leave and start their own studios?

Is this for real or some cope?

I'm enjoying Sousou no Frieren's manga more than the anime, and the view tends to be the opposite in my experience. I was aware of manga before it ever got popular, but popularity is almost always a curse with this genre. God forbid you talk about it on /a/.
I think its because I'm used to reading visual novels so I love slower paced story telling.

When an anime is as revered as Cowboy Bebop, it's naturally going to be "overrated", no matter how good it is. Cowboy Bebop is mostly popular because Adult Swim played it constantly and it was, well, better than DBZ and Naruto. I think Cowboy Bebop pseuded out a bit too much and generally wasn't as cool as Outlaw Star, but it's not the worst thing ever either. I personally wish people who like it would watch some of Sunrise's other late 90s arthouse shows; DT Eightron, Turn A, Brain Powerd, King Gainer, Betterman, Chouja Raideen, and Outlaw Star are all very good.

I don't know, but if anyone believes this is delusional.

Between the poor casting choices (barring Jet and the Dog), Wannabe MCU dialogue, and how poorly the characters are handled along with taking away that this is supposed to be an episodic series.

There is a lot for why Bebop failed, and it is simply because it isn't good

Sony is a an international company, but they are indeed found in Japan and had branches in the US and stuff and technically can still buy stuff in Japan using the main branch. The main reason why Microsoft and Activision didn't or can't is because they are never found in Japan to begin with. I do not know how much independency each branch has (think of Nijisanji where the other branches are collapsing to drama but the main JP branch is unaffected) though.

I found it so bizzare that the political correctness concerns are in the backliner in Japan -- it's mostly the west that is concerned.

In Japan I heard more worries about if Bloodborne would even get a PC port, how would they curate NicoNico or if Isekai Ojisan is going to continue (because SEGA vs Playstation).

Absolutely bizzare that there's no super-backlash on the other side of the pacific ocean. I assume if they legitimately treated this as a political correctness deal like I do, then there will be protests, riots, ddos and twitter firestorms.

Needless to say if they got it and did exactly what we worried about, get prepared for SKK or Shounen Jump to fuck themselves as well. I'm not kidding. They do it now, the rest can too.
Sony can’t even market, nor treat their anime-based games with the respect they deserve. I still remember how they treated the game dev for Sengan Kagura for not respecting his wishes on keeping his vision in intact for the game was supposed to be, to the point where he almost quit the industry full time. (Though, I could be wrong, so don’t quote me on that.)

Either way, I hope this deal falls through, but knowing our Western market, this just makes the “broad appeal” for the Japanese look too tempting.
Aaaand they initially tried to push back Stellar Blade, a game with miles more revealing than Senran Kagura, but ultimately let it slide. I just found it extra bizzare, but Eve is an Android so they let that go?

Best you can hope for is Yakuza connections favoring an independent Kadokawa at this rate.

Huge cope, I'm one of the believers that Cowboy Bebop is overrated, but even if it was a passable show at best, doesn't change that the Netflix series was a fucking disaster of an adaptation. Their obsession of shitting on things to try and make their crap seem decent is exhausting.

Is Rance good? All I've heard it's if the MC from Konosuba was able to do everything he wanted to do

That on its face, sounds terrible. Part of what makes Konosuba so enjoyable is that all of the characters, MC included, are pieces of shit and they more often than not immediately get their come uppance for the shit they do.

That said they all are ultimately good people, just shitty good people and will usually band together to do the right thing, which makes them endearing.
