God damn that's bad. I wonder if he was afraid that having the mc end with anyone will have him called out for grooming (which is common pitfall of isekai featuring adult people).

The big question is what was the point of everything? The isekai part doesn't have any effect on the plot character wise, unless the mc made a surgery on someone. You don't need an elaborate background on someone taking revenge for killing their mother.

The showbiz part sounds empty from what I read with the moral being "it's extremely exploitative but the glamour is worth it". If Aqua ended the series with "fuck this industry, it killed everyone I loved, I'm going to be an accountant and live a normal life" it would have at least had a cycle of abuse being broken. Instead it's basically waiting for her to be raped so she could push the next generation into the industry to fill her dreams like her mother.

I think I said on the original 3 parter that it looks like a Cuties situation, where the criticism falls flat because the show glamorise the thing it supposedly criticizes. You need massive balls to tell idol otaku to kill themselves and ban the entire idol industry for every person below 18 years old, but it's just easier to say you feel bad about it and continue consooming it
You pretty much covered it. The thing is it's obvious Aka wanted to end the series with Aqua doing sudoku but my god did he go in the most retarded and halfassed way to get to that point. And yeah, he clearly pussied out on criticism of the idol industry, probably the divorce, becoming a fat fuck and becoming addicted to vtubers was a big part of that shift.

And well, he loves throwing out whatever he's working on to give it a halfassed ending only to go into the next decent premise that he will abandon and leave in the shitter. He can't even use the "overworked" card since he doesn't draw anymore, just writes.
The Supernatural Elements literally have zero impact. If Gorro had just been some doctor that got murdered, the only arc we lose out on is Dark Star Ruby, and while I actually liked Dark Star Ruby, it is literally inconsequential to the plot. The story does not change at all if Dark Star never happens.
They were always pointless and Dark Ruby could have been triggered by pretty much anything (hell, if you really want to go dark about the idol industry, have her go into a casting couch and that's what makes her snap for a time). And it pisses me off because that was the part of the hook that interested me, yet the wisdom of a man in his thirties with medical knowledge never came up outside of a couple of throwaway gags like knowing how to set up a date and for Ruby it was just misery porn.
Good fucking riddance. The more I read of Oshi no Ko, the more I realize that I am staring at a more retarded manga version of Spec Ops the Line what with all the moral grand-standing of the idol industry (without actually having the balls to even call specific names or referencing events that showcases the insanity related to those industries) combined with Darling in the Franxx's dogshit ending syndrome.
Agreed and good comparison. I will say that I'm one of the dumb fucks that enjoyed Franxx, or to be exact, I enjoyed how it shifted from giant robots that look like shit fighting alien critters to "society with detached family values tries to rekindle what was lost", that part I legitimately enjoyed even though it came out of nowhere. Kind of the same with Eureka 7 where the robot part was honestly the weakest and the "create a family when you can" part was what kept me most engaged.

On more standard weekly topics. Dandadan's new chapter came out and I love how much of a little shit Aira is.

Eureka 7 is probably my favorite anime of all time. I was the same age as Renton when it started airing on Adult Swim. My family had also just moved to a really boring rural/retirement community in Colorado and it snowed fucking constantly which was a problem for me because I hate getting cold.

I really empathized with Renton at the time, and the show did a pretty smart thing of having two or three different couples at various stages of their lives throughout the series, so as I got older and revisited it, I found it easier to understand where other characters were coming from.

I can't really speak to the Mecha design of the LFOs or KLFs that appear. I personally like them and my favorite part of Mecha Break is that Takayuki Yanase is one of the two designers of the mechs in that game because in particular on the flying mechs it really shines through.

Also the show's probably responsible for me eventually getting a pilot's license and having several thousand hours in various aircraft simulators.

The last like four Dandadan chapters have been fire. I love Momo and Ken but getting to see more of Aira, Jiji, and Kinta dicking around is always welcome.

And Smug Aira is pretty great. 1732026871749.png

I enjoyed it as well, though my beef with the mecha part coming from watching Gundam and other stuff in that vein is that it felt like it was just there to have mecha to a degree. Kind of like Big O where the mecha is fun, but it honestly comes out of nowhere for the most part when in relation to the core plot. The series was not really about it and that's fine.

That screencap stole the whole chapter. But yeah, I enjoy the whole party faffing about, though we are still missing the formal induction of Zuma
Sony in talks to buy manga and game publisher Kadokawa (archive)

May god have mercy on our fucking souls if the king of pozzed get control of Kadokawa.

This just caught my attention a while ago and I cannot stop thinking about it. If they pull it off, everything is legitimately FUCKED, period. And I meant it.

The thing is this is not just "a huge chunk of the manga market" and "some" anime. They buy Kadokawa, they send a signal to everyone else that they are all free game.

Next thing you can expect is almost everything getting curated and obstructed locally on Japan (while they used to be only be able to do so through VAs) and a LOT of stuff (e.g. Overlord which has a lot of bizarre non-kosher stuff even for Kadokawa standards, the Nikke manga on Corocoro if they ever get SKK as well which is an inevitable if they do get Kadokawa). Pretty much anything deemed heresy for United Nations standards is going to be dismantled and curated VERY quickly.

They already proved what they can do to the Western video game industry with only two companies. Anime is untouched. It's next.

EDIT: Checked Japanese Twitter at least. It was mostly silent or infested by possible bots. This is straight up nightmare fuel territory.

EDIT: English AniTwitter also mostly silent. Get ready to be fucked.

Kadokawa had the golden goose of Kemono Friends fall into their laps and they killed it. They couldn't get any more incompetent.
Ahh I remember Kemono Friends. That WAS a real Twitter shitstorm.

Oddly enough, I haven't saw any sparks of fire in Japanese Twitter (or Chinese/Korean) about the upcoming cultural terrorism attack. Almost exclusively Americans. It's bizarre given this IS nightmare fuel. Even more so than the Kemono Friends wars.

Dynagiga,
You know you've been on KF too long when you read this as "Dynigga."

......

So I've lately gotten interested in the original Space Battleship Yamato shows from the 70s and 80s (not sure yet if I'll bother with the reboots), but...

.... Has anyone ever done a good fansub of the third TV series? a group called Central Anime subbed the first two seasons but they avoided the third due to apparently not liking it. So the only subs out are HK subs, meaning I might end up having to watch the Star Blazers dub if I make it that far, just to have something resembling a professional translation.

(Though... I actually watched a few eps of Star Blazers to see how it compared and honestly despite being dubbed in the seventies, it's pretty faithful and not a bad watch. I might mainline watching the Star Blazers dub because I remember trying to watch the Japanese and hating that stupid robot).

Also.... how is the manga? I saw Leiji Matsumoto's manga adaptation got a western release, and I'm wondering if its different enough to be worth reading?

I'm on something of a Leiji Matsumoto train right now as I'm also watching Galaxy Express 999 and maybe Captain Harlock, but I may frontline Yamato.

Eureka Seven is utter brim. It seemed like an 80s Sunrise mecha like Xabungle or Dunbine or whatever in the modern era, and it did have great designs like a transforming car that can launch from an airship, but instead, much like Macross, it focused on some gay romance nobody cares about.

It would be a good thing if they made anime more respectable to meet UN standards -- Shotaro would be proud -- but the main thing I'm worried about is anime becoming even MORE inbred and tropey and cringeworthy to meet what most western weebs think anime is, sort of like those Adult Swim not-anime shows, Avatar (the bad one, not the blue people one), and, God forbid, Steven Universe. Western influence can often be a good thing -- it's how we got MD Geist 2, Sin: The Movie, and all those Bubblegum Crisis sequels -- but Westerners who like anime like shonen crap and lazy animation techniques, so it will end up very cringe.

Star Blazers is a good dub; it's quite faithful and retains the drama and stakes of the original. I agree; they did a good job making Analyzer more respectable in the dub, and later versions of Yamato do a really good job with him -- the 2199 reboot has a cool episode about him, and one of the late 90s Leiji Matsumoto games had a neat plotline about him finding his brother. Also, you should watch the 2199 reboot and its movie; it's one of the few reboots that's actually better than the original. It has scientific explanations for everything, like how wave motion works, and added new vehicles (like the Cosmo Seagull), new sections of the ship (a cafeteria, tribunal rooms, and a Wave Motion Engine room with its own uniformed division) while making pre-existing vehicles like the Cosmo Zero even cooler. Avoid anything else Yamato-related made after 2012; it goes full pants-on-head stupid and tries to justify Desler's horrendous actions and war crimes as self-defense and empire-building.

Like most Leiji manga, it's quite abridged, but it's fairly different from the anime, so you should read it. I really, REALLY hope more Leiji manga get translated; there are some pretty interesting ones out there that have remained ignored. Also on that front, Viz Media's late 90s Galaxy Express 999 release got scanned for the first time a couple of weeks ago, so go check it out! https://mangadex.org/title/6c5a3310-c4c7-4231-b34b-1124332a2236/galaxy-express-999

What did he end up criticizing anyways? Did it ever tackle organized crime connections, astroturfing or post idol glorydays horror stories?

The old "can't have a boyfriend" and cutthroat dynamics are very safe topics to cover that everyone already knows.

Ken Akamatsu should do something

As an additional note, for unknown reasons it's (mostly) only Americans that are worried about it. This is not how AniTwitter Japan usually works at all, If it is explicitly a political correctness deal and they know it is, there will be a rabid backlash almost immediately that I'll be seeing the rage flooding my own twitter headlines and feed as soon as the proposed deal is announced (my twitter history is mostly anime and video games), that sort where people will be hacking Kadokawa's servers or even email/phone threat-bomb them -- similar situation with the Kemono Friends sellout. This time however, it has not happened.

Instead, what I saw is the Japanese having mostly no concerns about the Sony-Kadokawa deal, even comparing it to Microsoft purchasing Activision. There are still concerns of Political Correctness being spread to anime, make no mistake (given Sony has a notorious track record with Stellar Blade), but they are much rarer to see compared to the English tweets. There are also oddly few tweets past the first 2 or 3 hours, and updating progress is relatively slow for what is by all means, a death threat.

I just hope at this point they know something we Gaijin don't.

The worst it went with by far is the fucked up dad villian getting turned into a boy toy of some crazy bitch when he was a young actor. Aside from that, one of the main girls almost doing a casting couch would be the closest. The first thing was handled incredibly sloppily. The second was just an excuse to move the plot forward for the most part.

No and the fucked up thing is he had a character he could have done that with. Miyoko (the twin's adopted mother) was someone who came to Tokyo to be a star and didn't make it. Ended up working in bars recommending prettier girls to other men as like an attempt to curry favor. However Ichigo (Ai's adopted father and owner of the Strawberry Talent Agency) ends up intervening and telling her to stop wasting her time doing that and develop her skills as a manager and come to work for him instead. She does this and eventually marries Ichigo.

This all happens within like two chapters back to back and it never gets brought up again.

Nyan Neko Sugar Girls has better animation, writing, and voice acting than anything in this thread.

I actually used to have the first volume of that manga physically.

Galaxy Express 999 is kind of a sad series, not just in its content and feels but in how its a perfect example of a story that should have just been allowed to end. The first movie is good, and I've liked what I've seen of the TV series (to the point I'm sad I didn't buy the bluray collections when they were easily acquired)....

....But Adieu Galaxy Express 999 is a masterclass in being a completely tacked-on sequel that just totally spoils everything by making the events of the previous movie entirely pointless, backpedaling on major emotional beats, and then trying to cover by blatantly retreading plot and emotional beats. So we get a new girl who is literally Claire 2.0, and some elf dude who only exists to die tragically, and a retread of Tetsuro thinking Maetel has betrayed him, finding out she didn't, and being sad at the prospect he might never see her again (which falls flat when the first movie said the same thing and he wound up meeting her again).

..... On that note, does anyone know a place on the High Seas where I can find the Discotek version of Galaxy Express 999: Eternal Fantasy? I tried to watch a version I found on nyaa which was clearly a fansub, and also at times rather hard to comprehend. And all the others I found seemed like they might be the same fansub. So this is another case where the best translation is one I have to pay for.... and I would rather not pay money for a one-hour "movie" that I'm convinced is gonna suck.

(Via that fansub, I got as far as the part showing that there's a new character who is a sexy robot girl embodiment of the Three-Nine itself... I had to facepalm there).

Could be a disaster for a huge chunk of the manga market, as well as some anime. I focus on the manga.

Here are some they have published:
Sony can’t even market, nor treat their anime-based games with the respect they deserve. I still remember how they treated the game dev for Sengan Kagura for not respecting his wishes on keeping his vision in intact for the game was supposed to be, to the point where he almost quit the industry full time. (Though, I could be wrong, so don’t quote me on that.)

Either way, I hope this deal falls through, but knowing our Western market, this just makes the “broad appeal” for the Japanese look too tempting.
