I had planned to completely ignore it as the artwork and description made me think "Oh, it's another one of those shows with the plain girl being fawned over by many pretty men for no real discernible reason with a final relationship that can best be described as abusive". But various groups all over the internet kept saying it was good (and I avoided spoilers, somehow) so curiosity won out and I'm pleased to say my initial assumptions were very, very wrong. Also I like in Gintama that you sometimes think it's a filler episodes only for it to suddenly turn serious or have important plot elements.

Some of my favorite episodes are those that are jokey at first but turn out to have major ramifications later down the line in the series. It also helps that the setting doesn't change very much so recurring characters from one off episodes returning doesn't seem like an asspull.

Almost every popular or mainstream anime does this, and that's because when an anime doesn't, it's labeled as "incomprehensible" for not being easy-to-follow viewing. A good example of this is how Evangelion is praised for complex characters, even though the characters really aren't that complex and it just has psychological scenes and religious imagery to fool people into thinking they're watching something deep. Something like Brain Powerd or G-Reco is considered to be terrible because the characters' motivations can be difficult to determine, as they aren't basic tropes and don't share every single thought they have -- the very thing that makes those characters feel even more like real people.

I believe rahxephon is better written and has more interesting characters than evangelion, and I love both

Each twist has that air of 'betcha didn't see that coming! Aren't you surprised and shocked!!' and there's not really a sense of an overarching plan. It feels very much like it's being made up on the spot sometimes and it's pretty obvious when a character gets dropped just because they're not convenient. It feels like Gege shelves things to pick up later and then never actually picks them back up.

I think Sukuna is cool though, his dynamic with the cast is pretty interesting since he doesn't have any particular goals. He's like an immovable obstacle and it's nice to have a villain who isn't constantly monologuing about their evul plans.

It just seems like the author wants to get it done with but doesn't know how to do it but every once in a while does something he finds neat for the hell of it, like the whole comedian "fight". The pacing is absolutely horrible and seeing how so much of the cast is just in the background, he should have killed them off page like Nobara and reduced the clutter. I'm still annoyed that Todo banished into nothingness with how fucking awesome his combo operations with Yugi (most irrelevant main character ever) were.

The most bullshit thing about this latest JJK copout is that Sukuna isn't strong just because of his cursed techniques, the Gojo fight showed us that these characters are strong because of their total mastery cursed energy and the bullshit that they can pull off that's unthinkable for anyone else like destroying their own brain and regenerating it in order to use domain expansion again. Gege should have just let Judgeman take Sukuna's cursed techniques just to still have him blitz everyone without them, giving him a handicap to overcome is a million times more interesting than "Oh, there's a new rule so nothing actually changes and the last few chapter of planning were completely wasted lol"

I actually think it's gotten a million times better since the culling games, I appreciate that when JJK kills off character, it really means it and has no plans to bring them back except in the case of Yuji that one time but like, the Shibuya incident killed or crippled so many characters that did not even come close to living up to their potential. Like, is there anyone here who did not want to see more of Nanami, Todou or Nobara? Also, I think pre-culling game it felt like a newer sadboi shonen that's tries and fails at emotionally manipulating you with cheap bullshit whereas now, it's become a lot like older shonen which prioritizes showing you cool shit but leaves room for feels so that when they happen, they hit a lot harder. Say what you want about Kubo but he was a master of rule of cool and he brought the fucking kino even if his writing wasn't the best.

the thing is too that even without curses Sukuna is still a huge guy with four arms who could easily kick Yuji's ass in a one to one. The last few fights he's been actively not trying very hard so it's getting boring, even if he is an interesting character. I liked his interactions with Uraume and Yorozu, I wanna see more of him where he's not bored-ly messing with the main cast. Gege doesn't really seem to like writing that kind of thing though.

I miss Nobara and Todou I have plenty of beef with Bleach constantly making up new powers for ichigo so he's the strongest boy in the world, but JJK can't touch it in terms of an MC who actually does stuff. Yugi was so useless Sukuna fully jumped ship- even if it's supposed to be a subversion of shounen norms it's not good if the MC isn't the most engaging character in the scenes he's in.

Too many of these series try to pretend like their "power systems" aren't made up bullshit or just something to excuse whatever power. One Piece had magic devil fruits, which can effectively do anything and it sure as hell doesn't pretend like they can't nowadays. Naruto had bloodlines where some people are just born with the ability to fuck reality beyond their MP bars. Bleach, JJK, and Hiatus X Hiatus never shut the fuck up about how their fantasy nonsense is supposed to work while at the same time not making sense and pretending that it does.

I stopped trying to make any sense out of cursed energy a very long time ago. I was just in it for the ride until things got too convoluted for their own good/lame. Todo's ability is simple, fun, trolly and I can understand it, same deal with Megumi (I can summon neat familiars from my shadow) or Nanami (I hit things really fucking hard if I hit the right spot and I'm even more powerful during overtime).

Gojo? Mental wank that I just filed as "he's OP as fuck, don't think too hard about it", same deal with Sukuna.

The new Golden Bat manga, which started serialization about a year ago, is being scanlated! This is very exciting because, for those who are unfamiliar, Golden Bat is one of the world's oldest superhero characters, predating both Batman and Superman, and very little Golden Bat content has been translated into English, save for a couple episodes of the 60s anime and now this manga. Another classic manga that has a recent translation project is Sally the Witch, which is a lot spookier than I expected it.

That one is Hitori No Shita, I recommend you watch the chinese dubs. Keep in mind the first two seasons are a lot rougher in terms of animation, but overall I enjoyed it.

Not quite as action packed but I suggest White Cat Legend.

Yeah I was hoping he'd string them along for a bit. He'd just had to fight Gojo and Kashimo though so idk maybe he wanted to go and have a nap or something- He's not exactly up against the A team of jujutsu sorcerers.

I will say that the anime adaptation massively improves the fight scenes in terms of intelligibility and spectacle. That Mahoraga vs Sukuna fight was sick as hell, real akira vibes with the music and visuals.

I don't think there's gonna be a final yuji/sukuna fight with a decisive conclusion at then end of all this. Imo there'll be some twist or cop-out as a final 'fuck you' to the shounen genre.
