I've heard Apothecary Diaries, Ascendence of a Bookworm, Shimoneta, Frieren at the Funeral are good, yet to see them myself. I'd also recommend Slime Isekai (Slime Diaries is it's spin-off), Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent (Isekai, but shojo) are also good, I liked them personally.
Sorry I should've clarified that the list is what's currently on my server and I was looking for new ideas or stuff I might've forgotten.

You totally forgot CLANNAD.

And Mononoke. The lack of "Princess" is intended.

This is pretty interesting. Apparently it's an intro for a hypothetical Brave-style super robot anime. I like that it takes cues from Brave Saga for the heroes and Go Nagai for the villains.

The Boy and the Heron, Suzume Nominated for Golden Globes

Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron and Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume have been doing well for themselves both critically and commercially, with the former topping the box office for the U.S. this past weekend. Now both films are officially up for another award as they’ve been nominated for the 2024 Golden Globes in the category of Best Motion Picture Animated.

This follows The Boy and the Heron‘s recent landing of a New York Film Critics Award. Here’s what the pair of features will be up against:

Golden Globe Nominees for Best Motion Picture, Animated

  • The Boy and the Heron
  • Elemental
  • Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
  • The Super Mario Bros. Movie
  • Suzume
  • Wish

Either way, congrats Miyazaki-san and Shinkai-san!

Out of curiosity, I looked at what tvtropes say about Future Precure, and of course they cry about all the girls turning up to be straight.
It's not a huge surprise, Precure has a big yuri fanbase. Even though it's especially dumb in Yes5's case since that was the only season with actual romance for years and all but two girls had "relationships" with male characters in the original show. The two who didn't Karen and Kurumi, funnily enough don't in this sequel either. And they were shipped together by fans a lot so you think that would placate people. But they're probably annoyed about Saki from Splash Star specifically since Saki and Mai was also a popular ship. Even though as per the norm Saki had a crush on a male character in Splash Star too.

Yuri shippers are dumb, news at eleven. The show is about friendship, if they were lovers it would go against the key theme of the show. The only season that actually feels like it had possible yuri romance was Kira Kira and that was mainly just a big gag about Takarazuka. Doki Doki was the only other season that was kind of gay too but there was no romance or anything either with it.

I assume the same problem is going to come up with the Maho sequel next year since Mirai and Liko are also a very popular ship and because of Haa they're treated like a faux-married couple. Although the Maho manga did have the two of them kiss but that was to break a magic spell or something.

I'm still mad Japan choseWeathering With You over Children of the Sea back in 2019. They deserved to lose to Parasite for that alone.
I haven't watched a Gibli film since Ponyo Ariette when it first came out. While I liked Ponyo, remembering back, Ponyo had this environmentalist message I never liked, and I just found Ariettie sad.

I'm not against sad movies or messages, it's just when me at 9-10 can see how overbearing the message is, it just takes me out of the film

I might make a big list for you later, but I'll tell you right now, don't bother with Cop Craft. I saw that shit seasonally & it sucks around halfway through & there's even a recap episode midway somewhere around EP5-8.
Speaking of, today's episode was intense. Found out who killed the Pure Concubine's baby... or not. It's complicated, but damn it was satisfying
I just binged through 11 episodes, I love this show already.
I definitely recommend Apothecary Diaries; if you could only watch one show of the season, I'd pick it over Frieren.
I was actually a manga reader for Frieren before, I dropped it & I'm around 22 chapters behind. I like this show way more than I would've liked Frieren's anime.

Apothecary Diaries is the absolute dark horse of the season. Never knew anyone who read the source material or saw the manga in B&N until now. I'm going to wait until the show is over, then read up on it. I'm enjoying it too much to spoil myself. And it's 24 episodes, so it's continuing thru winter season

I (unwillingly) watched Weathering With You with my friends and I thought that was one of the worst films I've watched, due in no part to the very questionable shit that was added in. The message didn't kick in to me until a year later, when I realized by what the director meant for "environmental message".

Basically, the ending that Tokyo should naturally be submerged in rainwater all because of a young (16-17 year old) who wanted to save a young girl he liked from some supernatural shit is one of the most fucked up logic I can ever comprehend in a film. It basically says "fuck a million lives, I will save this very young girl I liked" in a way that it seems justified, while hinting to just "let nature be" (ala, letting the rain go by and flood the place). Hell, the film doesn't even realize the logical implications of such flooding and the major population of the country. It is a massive plot question mark that makes me despise the film even more, apart from the environmental message and the young kids ages that feels more "pedo-friendly".

Of course, that is not the only sins the movie has done. Between characters that are less "character" and more "caricature", the fact that Shinkai compared it to Joker (which I find to be a cardinal sin given the latter is a really good film compared to this animated dogshit), obnoxious loud-ass music with a shit band and a bad fucking plot, the worst offense this film did was that it won over the zoomers' hearts, and made Shinkai more loved. Say what you want about Miyazaki, he gets lots of flak from some of his films and his bad treatment of his son. However, little have people criticised Shinkai for anything and most weebs treat him as if he's a god-tier anime director, much like how gamers see Hideo Kojima as a god-tier game director and film critics see Jordan Peele as a god-tier filmmaker. The actual reality is that Shinkai's films are mediocre at best and plot-inducing headaches at worst. Mediocrity is mental illness and thus should not be accepted.

I swear if Suzune wins a single award, I will lose all hope to animation forever.

That's with a lot of movie directors in general tbh. Mediocre sells, the law of averages and all that. If you want art, you have to look for it. Say what you will about Promare being full of Trigger tropes, it's so fun and vibrant, enough that I really don't care about the gay subtext, which isn't even the main message.

It's a good series. It's especially neat how she will figure out half the story while the other half is staring her in the face and she doesn't notice. Like this episode she was figuring out the source of the poisonings and very nearly unravelled a big conspiracy involving the emperor's bloodline

It's what makes Maomao a good character. She's smart but not all knowing. Other people almost always have to help her piece the mystery together. She acts like what she is: a smart-ass that used to work at a whore house. She knows quite a bit, she's heard a lot of stuff, but she only has her perspective

Between characters that are less "character" and more "caricature",
Almost every popular or mainstream anime does this, and that's because when an anime doesn't, it's labeled as "incomprehensible" for not being easy-to-follow viewing. A good example of this is how Evangelion is praised for complex characters, even though the characters really aren't that complex and it just has psychological scenes and religious imagery to fool people into thinking they're watching something deep. Something like Brain Powerd or G-Reco is considered to be terrible because the characters' motivations can be difficult to determine, as they aren't basic tropes and don't share every single thought they have -- the very thing that makes those characters feel even more like real people.

It's marvelous, and the twist I pretty much expected came up. Though could someone explain why they did the switcheroo in the first place? It doesn't really protect the prince

Also I like in Gintama that you sometimes think it's a filler episodes only for it to suddenly turn serious or have important plot elements.

I had planned to completely ignore it as the artwork and description made me think "Oh, it's another one of those shows with the plain girl being fawned over by many pretty men for no real discernible reason with a final relationship that can best be described as abusive". But various groups all over the internet kept saying it was good (and I avoided spoilers, somehow) so curiosity won out and I'm pleased to say my initial assumptions were very, very wrong. Snarky Maomao is best Maomao.
