More compelling, and it was not a high bar

Nigga, we both know that's not true. Even I, the weirdo that likes some of the stuff made for children like One Piece and Juju-the cow can admit it. Just look at the last few pages of this thread. People actually recommending and talking about the most retarded shows with little girls in existence.

I avoid moe like the plague but it only has to be better than it's western equivalents of MLP and Steven Universe for my point to stick.

Well look, I'd be surprised if pokemon suddenly had Pikachu telling nigger demons to kys, kids watch that. Frieren ain't a kids show. It's Japanese LOTR made by Madhouse who have seemingly gotten their shit back in gear after many years- look I like their shows, but it's been a while since they've made a Hellsing-, that's not a kids show, that's a epic in the making.

And I will say this, the lack of cursing just makes the violence hit home harder. I don't expect anime elf Gandalf to say "oh shit, oh fuck", I expect her to be a badass.
When I was talking about anime adaptations altering crude dialogues, my example in mind was BokuYaba:

In the manga, Kyoutarou clearly says 'Shitty Bitch' (Kuso Bitch) but this gets replaced by 'Shitty Woman' (Kuso Onna). All his funny gory delusions seem to be absent in the anime too

Gay, lame and cringe.

Hilarious to claim that socially incompetent NEET's can somehow make compelling storytelling.
I may disagree on the "over the last 50 years" bit and narrow it to the last 10~15 years instead, but he's not entirely wrong on that claim either. Even if he was specifically referring to the religious and occult themes as personal examples anyway. A majority of comics I consume these days are mangas, with the occasional european/french comics (which have mostly become luxury items than something I could normally consume), simply because I just want to enjoy entertainment.

Here's a random selection of mangas I own and liked:

Space Battleship 2199 Yamato (comic adaptation with extra stuff) - Ushiro no Shoumen Kamui-san - Arte - Ano Ko ni Kiss to Shirayuri Wo
Mobile Suit Gundam MSV-R - Gokushufudou - Gunbured Sisters - The Little Match Girl

Mangas are so cheap to obtain in moonrunes and in digital format for me. Amazon JP most often discount series in sales and sometimes hand them out for free.
I recently gotten last week the two first volumes of S-Rank Boukensha Musume that way (I assume as a celebration event for the anime), it is a nice and cute fantasy story of a retired adventurer and his adopted daughter who succeeded him.

If anyone wants to take more of the oji-san pill, there is Katainaka no Ossan and Henkyou no Roukishi I would definitely recommend.

I hate that they make it serious, Dragon Ball Evolution is peak meme material but this trailer reminds me of an old kaiju movie I watched when I was a kid called D-Wars Dragon Wars from Korea. That movie is fucking terrible but takes itself so seriously about how people respond to the kaiju situation despite the kaiju being a supernatural entity which ascends to heaven in the end. This is like that, its a fucking tournament fighter anime and there are ambulances and explosions with people getting hurt who Im supposed to gasp at. What the fuck is wrong with netflix.

Tax: I finished Record of Lodoss war, its very very boring I dont remember shit and I will never watch it again. Gonna pick up the 93 Jojo OVA cause I like the animation.
I'm just starved for some good anime discussion videos, but after getting burned one too many times, you end up cautious whenever something new pops up.
I could actually dissect a lot of anime like how I sperg out in the other threads but I just cant get into Anime proper. If its a good show I like it has 15 seasons which I cant commit to and if its a bad show it probably released after 2006 and I will not like it due to the fucked up animation/post processing effects. Also its very difficult finding 720p collections which are under 3 gb per season, I really want to watch Urusei Yatsura from the 80s but Im not able to find any collection which has 70-100mb episodes. I can get into a lot of manga though so if people can recommend that shit that would be good, even if Im very behind all the greats. Just started Ranma 1/2, seems like a very good kids comic.

Anybody watching Bikkuri-men?

The cd is by hiroyuki takei, it looks like a long running franchise from decades that I've never heard before

Little personal rant but moe/muh little girls is an empty buzzword imo. It's only valid when people use it to refer to a specific sub-genre of SOL that tries to get carried by muh cute girls and has nothing else going for it. You can have all kinds of moe depending on your show and your characters and it could be good or bad depending on how you make it.

For instance I'd argue Wolfgang Grimmer from Monster being moe adds to his character and appeal.

I just got to the episode that introduces Grimmer (haven't watched it yet) and him being described as "moe" is the most foreboding thing you could say as somebody going into MONSTER blind.

Also the "moe" discussion reminds me of this chart

Space Battleship 2199 Yamato
Is there a place to read this in English? The only Yamato manga I can find translated in English is the original 1974 version. I'm seconding Johnny Ridden, though.

My recommendations for modern manga are The Vertical World (it used to be free on Mangaplus but apparently it's paywalled beyond the first 6 chapters now -- a shame because it really is a well-written, thought-provoking story with nothing disgusting), Transformers Go!Go! (Transformers gag manga with some nice full-colour art and toy advertisements), GaoGaiGar vs Betterman (GaoGaiGar sequel that significantly links it together with Betterman), Nick and Lever (short gag manga with an oddly realistic art style -- I guess this is another instance of moe being used with buff men), and Digimon Dreamers (Witchelny is featured in this, and the villains' plan is quite interesting).

It really depends on how you define it, because really the term outside of its most common accepted context is a bit nebulous. If you take to mean a likable person with a friendly, nonthreatening demeanour who encounters continuous difficulties due to his/her circumstances in a way that tests their optimism you could easily cite a character such as Yang Wen-Li from Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
Yang_1.jpg
Friendly, happy-go-lucky guy by nature who joined the military for no reason other than to make a living and would rather spend all his days drinking tea and studying history. He exhibits eccentric mannerisms that fly in the face of how a soldier is expected to behave. He also just so happens to be the most devastatingly effective military commander in his entire faction, if not the entire setting of the show. He has to weather the horrors of war, loss of loved ones, and even betrayal from within that tests his faith in the very democratic system he continuously fights to defend. There are many moments in the show where his mask of optimism drops and you can get a glimpse of just how badly it's really affecting him.

It's a much darker variety, but it could easily be argued that he fits the bill .

Just wanted to let you guys know that recently Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san ended in the best way it could have:

The best part, though, is that even though the main story is over, the real one is just beginning:

IMG_7549.png

The daughter of this future married couple is now getting her own spin-off story, with the twist of her classmate actually having the memory as to he confessed to her, possibly dating back to when they both were in kindergarten.

Either way, the hits just keep on coming.

I was also thinking about Yang, that's definitely one of his main appeals and it's played straight, the show isn't even trying to hide it.
But usually the definition would usually be in line with something like "growing affection for a fictional character", so this can encompass a lot of things. I'd argue the actual meaning of "moe" can be applied outside of anime.

Like, Jimmy McGill is probably more moe than most anime cute girls. His main personality trait is being charming and naturally getting people to like him, so it shows in a lot of his dialogues, stunts and quirks.

In the earlier seasons where he's largely trying to do the right thing and getting screwed for it, I definitely agree. However, as the seaons drag on and he starts taking on increasingly sleazy attitudes and scummy actions I'd argue it diminishes greatly. Still a compelling character with all of the charm and quirks, but he discards a great deal of the sympathetic characterization that in my mind is essential to the archetype.

In fact, Howard Hamlin towards the end really fits the archetype. Genuinely nice guy who does things he doesn't like because he feels it's a necessity to preserve his company's good image, which is an obligation a man in his position has to all the employees working under him. He makes mistakes like everyone else, but the slings and arrows and bullets he suffers are disproportionate at best and outright undeserved at worst.
