In the early 2000s anime started to get a little bad because digipaint processes for frames were becoming more of an industry standard and the result was pretty ugly as shit frames at times, and then as things pulled towards 2006-2007 there was that huge anime bubble in Japan where it got really, really shitty.

One of my favorites of the era, Musashi Gundoh. You may recognize the general art style, because it's a creative venture by none other than Lupin the III creator, Monkey Punch. Please keep in mind this clip isn't edited in any way, and the audio isn't desynced as a result of YouTube's compression, the sound design is just completely terrible on its own.

Yeah I remember that. Quite a polarizing show given it's premise and animation. Remember that being so talked about back in '06 (when it wasn't Haruhi Suzumiya).

I always felt like with actually good animation it would've been awesome. The concept is really neat also refreshing for an anime to show guns beat swords and I feel it could really end up endearing if it was done correctly.

That is true. It's like someone quickly left with half the budget and they were stuck finishing it this way. Makes me think of Chargeman Ken and the way that felt like a half-hour episode crammed into 5 minutes, which I suppose came out of mishap in planning/negotiating the show with some broadcaster who could only give them that length).

Strangely I wanted to think animals were that way when I was 7. Reality has a way of clouding your expectations and ground to you the true facts of life. Of course it's that prudish way that any entertainment geared to a mass audience (including children) often has to stick to certain limits when dealing with primary sexual characteristics. Most of us do keep that in mind when creating our characters we want the world to see, but perhaps some take it too seriously than others.

EDIT: I personally don't mind seeing or drawing genitals on human characters myself, but it's animals I always feel kinda awkward over, probably because of the way cartoons have always gloss over that with a smooth void that suggest nothing of value to see, yet these characters can do anything just as much as in reality the way they could be written or suggested to do. I thought of that in particular when I was a German animated feature called "Felidae" and in this scene that clearly shows a sexual encounter but never draws the 'necessary parts'. It's more interesting what is not there I find.

The asiatic countries, Japan in particular, really do seem to have this odd censorship thing going. In Anime/manga and other forms of media as well, they might have the most bizarrely sexual scenes...and then edit out the actual genitalia, whether it be by mosaic filters or outright making people the sexual equivalent of fashion mannequins. I've never quite understood why they have such a widespread reaction to this.

It can be weird at times. If the authors knew they were going to be censored, I would think showing it from an angle that obscures those parts would've sufficed as long as you got the point across. Also, I would think drawing genitals flaccid/un-aroused would've been safer than to go all out and be obvious about the intention.
 
They do it because you can actually get charged for obscenity if you display uncensored genitalia in Japan. Even actual porn gets covered in mosaics.
 
So, because I don't want everyone I know irl to know what a fucking weeb I am I'll ask you guys. Whats everyone watching/reading? Whats good this season?
