Mushi Pro's 1973 art film, Belladonna of Sadness, is finally getting released in America. It'll be touring art house theaters throughout the country starting this May. (It'll be in my area in May, and I fully intend to see it.)
Too bad my town isn't blessed with one of those. *sigh*

Reminded Italy got the film's soundtrack on vinyl back in the 70's, that's worth checking out for tracks like this.

I've been told the first Animerama film (A Thousand and One Nights) did get an English release that was aired on Australian TV in the Adelaide area back around 1976, still lost in the wild besides this trailer.

One of the comments at this blog post mentioned possibly having a preview clip of it on some blooper tape in his mitts.

Just started watching the new Ace Attorney anime on Crunchyroll. I highly recommend it, especially if you're already a fan of the games; it's an extremely faithful adaptation.
Eh. A-1 is shitting out a mediocre product. The animation is really bad, the music is meh, and the pacing is awful. It's going to be Danganronpa: The Animation quality, but at least DR had better animation. And I love Ace Attorney, it's one of my favorite series. And to see A-1 putting no effort into it is hard, mostly because you see A-1 put a fuckload of effort into something like SAO, which has some pretty good animation and music, and then you watch AA and it's got shit everything. And remember the SAO anime is four years old, and it's animation is far superior to the AA anime.

It is sad when they do that.

There's so much they could do with the AA anime, since it's a 23-24 episode season. You'd think they'd put some effort into an anime celebrating its 15th anniversary. At least we get Ace Attorney 6 in June.
At this point they might as well outsource it like the rest (unless they've done that on this show, I don't usually follow this stuff, but it not uncommon for Japanese studios to hand out work to Korea or elsewhere these days).

Hopefully it gets put out on DVD so everybody can enjoy it.

In any case, reviews for the thing are out, and no matter what they think of the movie they think it's an unforgettable experience, period.

In terms of the Ace Attorney anime, from what I understand, they had two months from when they first started working on it to when it would actually air on Japanese television. So they were under a severe time restraint and the first four episodes show it. They opted to just rush the four episodes out as quickly as possible so there's have time to give the rest of the episodes the time they deserve. Episode 5 on has a drastic jump in quality.

Interesting to see. Usually planing these shows takes much longer in the US (I think up to a year or more).

Not to mention American animation typically has much higher budgets than Japanese animation does. An anime episode can run up to like $300k (for really good episodes mostly, like pretty exceptional) while, for example, Avatar: The Last Airbender typically had $2m per episode to work with in addition to not being rushed. The Japanese work ethic for animation boils down less to make something of great quality and more to make something and then fix it/touch it up in the home release.

They also are just keen on pumping things out as fast as they can if they think it's profitable. Dragon Ball got its anime adaptation almost 5 months after the manga started.

It also helped Japan's animation industry was never unionized in much the same way the US has its "Animation Guild".

For all intents and purposes, they kinda are outsourcing it as it is- A-1 has next to no in-house animators outside their CGI, in-between and paint department (And they're outsourcing the latter two to other Japanese companies) and uses freelancers for key frames (on top of that, episode 6 was co-produced in conjunction with another company entirely).

Fuck, and I thought DBS had a shitty production schedule.

I loved koichi going super saiyan 2 last episode
Part 4 pretty much reads like 90s shonen in general at first. You have Yusuke Josuke and Kuwabara Okuyasu alongside Super Saiyan 2 Gohan Guanglai Kangyi Koichi whose Stand is Cell Echoes. Also worth mentioning is Frieza Red Hot Chili Peppers.

@Coster, I must apologize.

I was underestimating just how slow Akagi vs. Washizu would get. It's like Fukumoto is doing his hardest to not finish that battle given how long the sixth session is so far by itself.

At least watching Washizu lose his shit doesn't stop being fun.

Like 20 volumes of the Akagi manga is solely dedicated to Washizu, and it's still going.

That by itself I don't even mind, but what bothers me is how the pace just keeps getting slower.

I'm reading the first four sessions and think to myself "well, I'm not even halfway through what's available, so how's he gonna handle the next two sessions?". Then Session 5 is only as long as it is because Akagi tried to get all of Washizu's money so he won't have to play Session 6, and now it's at the point where Washizu argues with his henchmen for five fucking chapters over whether to play a certain tile or not.

At least when I read Berserk, you get past the boat with relative ease, and stuff is actually happening.

I heard A-1 is one of the most stressful studios to work for and the employees get worked like slaves, even by Japanese standards.

Just started watching the Madoka movies. A little annoyed that the first two movies were rehashes of the original series. Oh well.

Attack on Titan's second season is delayed until 2017; it's estimated to air in January. Read the linked entry for more information.

By the time the second season airs, it will have been nearly four years since the first season began airing. Damn, talk about a long wait.

That's actually fairly common in anime; they're called compilation movies. The upside is that there's usually new/updated animation and music.

Is anyone even still really hyped for attack on titan anymore? I mean at some point the hype has to die out, right? Also what on earth is that season going to look like that it took them this long? Did they completely overhaul the writing? Or did they get struck with a host of development problems?

I guess the question is whether they're working towards making it look amazing, or if they're struggling to make it not-shit.
