Ok I don't know if this belongs in the unpopular opinion thread, but I tried watching deen/stay night for shits and giggles and a few episodes in, I don't find it that bad. In fact I might be enjoying more then some of the more recent fate anime cough* Last Encore cough* Camelot movies.
This might change once I get a few more episodes in (or get around to playing the VN), but its strange since for years I've had people tell my that it was barley above the tuskihime anime in terms of quality.
The issue with DEEN/Stay Night was that it was a really early adaptation of Fate that tried to put in elements from the other two routes (Mainly the subplot with Sakura and Medea). It's really just mediocre and is only worse because of how the Ufotable adaptations look much better and are more faithful in comparison.

Holy shit Camelot is out? Need to check it. Unlimited Budget Works here we come.
Camelot movies are really not that good. While the animation is nice, it is a worse product compared to the mobile game since the movies take away the tension from some of the antagonists compared to the games. It also removed some characters who played key moments in the plot while putting in unnecessary fanservice scenes.

I have no idea why people are acting surprised on him having such opinions given the kind of shows he's worked on and written for. I read through his blog post where he apparently talked about 9/11 and Covid which has made people the most upset, most of it is just him discussing how 9/11 impacted what they could show in the series with a couple paragraphs at the end where he more gives his opinion.

Here's the original text where I guess people are pulling the 'controversy' from:

and a DeepL translation (for best reading experience put this on in the background while reading):
Anyway, we were walking on an extremely thin edge in those days.

Later, in the 2010s, I started to look into why 9/11 happened little by little.
It was an incident that had a huge impact not only on the U.S. but also on Japan and the world, but I felt that many things were being ignored.
However, I had dismissed many of the early conspiracy theories as unrealistic, although I found them interesting.
However, if there really was a major movement in the stock market just before 9/11, or if the debris was removed from the site of the collapse without a thorough examination, I could not shake the suspicion.

There are a number of people who have examined 9/11 from a calm and logical point of view, including a 9/11 truth seeker named Truther. However, their points of view and logic are contradictory, and I have seen ugly things like Truther fighting with Truther.
In any case, as a Japanese, I am still unable to see the truth.
Don't really get the problem with this section since he's just talking about them being interesting to think about and mentioning how if certain suspicious things did happen it would make it hard to not be at least a bit suspicious. He even calls out 9/11 truthers for have views/logic that are contradictory. None of this reads like a hardcore 9/11 conspiracy theorist, but more someone interested in the discussion around it.
And 19 years later, in 2020, or just before 2020, there is a person who has described the current situation as COVID-9/11. (COVID-1984, as many people call it, is of course George Orwell's 1984)
James Corbett, a Canadian living in Japan, has been doing this for over 14 years, mostly as a podcast, but increasingly as a video version of it on YouTube.
Although he is a doctor of literature, he has never been a member of any research organization or media, and his style of research is open source research, where he builds his logic from sources that are all online.
So, all the sources I refer to are presented.
I don't agree with all of them, but I have changed my mind about many of them.

James Corbett had his YouTube account deleted in the spring of this year, 2021.
He was not a loud proponent of conspiracy theories like the famous Alex Jones.
He was simply assessing the situation rationally and sounding the alarm about the dangers of what has been happening in the world since the spring of 2020, not just the disease itself, but the social situation.

The year 2020 was an extraordinary year. With the US presidential election at its core, the series of events happening on the Internet and in the media, and the pandemic and what to do about it, I had the most disrupted sense of values and everything else in my 60 years of life.
I easily lost faith in international organizations, in academics who propagandize about medicine, in doctors, and mainly in the direction of epidemiology, bacteriology, biology, information technology, and social engineering. It's not that I was discredited, it's that they acted like I was discredited.

I never thought that I would lose faith in science (people) - well, there have been signs of this in me since 2019, but it would take too long to write about them, so I won't.

But I'm not an investigative journalist, I'm just a writer of fiction, and in 2020, I kept wondering what I could create anew under such circumstances.
I had stopped looking at Twitter directly, and the echo chamber of social networking sites was a little too close to home.

Since the turn of the year, I've been prepared for a situation like the one I'm in right now (mid-May), and even then, I can only think of fiction, and in my case, it can only have some symmetry and symbolism, even if it doesn't reflect reality itself.

First of all, I had an extremely gratifying conversation, which will be included in my forthcoming book.

I hope you will forgive the unusual content of this entry. However, I thought I should write about it here, otherwise people might not understand why I'm talking so passionately about anime from 20 years ago.

I'll end this article by saying that we have to keep our sanity so that we don't think later that 2001 was 2020.
The Covid part that maybe more people could find fault with because of his views, but honestly nothing is too extreme here. He isn't denying there's a pandemic, he's calling out the societal reaction and the losing of faith in many touted experts because of their reaction to Covid. I don't think anything there is bad because I'm sure many people have the same opinions when given conflicting messaging and governments that seem to not care if they strangle out small business while propping up large ones. Would honestly say that probably many share his lack of faith in supposed experts after the last year or so. Even when he mentions the youtuber that would be considered more 'far-right' he says he doesn't agree with a lot of what he says, just that it made him consider some things.

Knowing that he's the guy behind Lain and Texhnolyze, none of his views seem that out of left field or extreme. He's just talking about the societal impact things have and problems with conditioning. Makes me feel like I'm taking crazy pills because I find nothing wrong with how he discusses either subject and nothing about how he writes makes me thing "wow anti-vaxxer 9/11 conspiracy nut". Comes off just as him discussing an interesting subject, kind of reminds me of something someone like Adam Curtis would talk about in one of his documentaries.

Reading it I'm still not surprised that pissed people off. I've seen creators and random nobodies attacked for less. Simply questioning power at all is enough to make you a pariah to these dumbasses. The government officials and academics they're told to support are infallible, so to question them is to question every single thing they believe in at once. Which, of course, means you are simultaneously every sort of terrible -ist they can think of. Conspiracy theorist, covid denialist, racist, gaycist, trancist, notsupportingmyshipwhenitsclearlycanoncist, etc.

Also I somehow never knew Texhnolyze was the same guy. Kinda disappointed in myself for that.

This is like that "sus" in the subtitles for Nagatoro, right?
View attachment 2412990
I've never watched/read Nagatoro, but that looks cringy. Just translate it into English most people can understand, I don't need to look up English slang to read these subtitles (unless it was intended by the author).

I have to admit that seeing the actual VAs on stage (except for Nozawa as Guilmon who prerecorded her dialogue I believe) felt cringy, I only really watched for the plot/subs so I could understand the play.

Still, it's not like the message is as bad as western animation like Blue's Clues blatantly featuring a pride parade or every recent series that feels the need to shove in identity politics where it isn't needed.
I don't think I saw many people complaining that Blue's Clues was ruined for them, so why is it suddenly an issue with Tamers, which as stated previously has covered more serious topics than Blue's Clues?
sus is old as shit, the ol' gay spirit of 69 skinheads use it figure out if you're someone who could really, truly wear fred perrys and ben shermans and thin suspenders.

it's august and no release of Girls und panzer das finale part 3 yet. the shirobako movie was made bythe same team and had a release 2 months after with subs coming a few weeks after that. Shirobako the movie was pretty good, good ending to a good series.

Apparently we get more battles from other schools in GUPDFP3. I wonder if sentai will have the original english voices whenever the 6 parter gets licensed. I hope they get the shirobako cast in line.

e: shirobako was released a year before any rips came out. some us company licensed it for FUCKING limited THEATER SHOWINGS.

The Nagatoro “sus” thing was way overblown in my opinion. Yeah, it was a little cringy, but it didn’t take away from the story or change anything. Not like Prison School’s “GamerGate” add-in, or that weird ass “fuck the patriarchy” stuff in Dragon Maid coming from the big boobed dragon that lusts after a literal shota and was implied to got drunk and banged her sister or something.

I would have just assumed that "sus" was just current slang appropriate for a teenage girl in 2021 if people hadn't pointed out that it's an allusion to Among Us (which I've never played) and I'd have easily figured out that it's short for "suspicious" given the context.

The sus thing I agree a bit cringy/dating but not intolerable and was a bit overblown, now the "dis into derp" and whatever the fuck "keener" is supposed to be on the other hand deserve to be mocked for just plain bad localizing just like the Kaguya social-distancing line even if they weren't major changes.

Yeah Lucoa the feminist icon was a great choice though, they had clearly done research into the story they were localizing to decide she was the prime character to do that to and yes she got drunk and banged her sister to lose her deity status.

"Sus" or "suss" is actual slang in Bongland and Australia so as a non-American it's no worse than all the shitty American subs which translate every rural character's dialogue into some bastardized Southern slang or the dubs which make every Osakan sound like a Texan. If you single that out to bitch about you're missing the forest for the trees. The bottom line is 90% of all official translators are shit because they can't seem to actually do actual 1-to-1 translations; whether they insert memes, deliberately alter whole pieces of dialogue or phonetically write out any accent they deem exotic. They should be mocked for their shittiness at any given opportunity.

Pray tell - what would an actual 1-to-1 translation even be like? Keeping in jokes that don't make sense in English? Would it be like the old fan translations that left in a lot of untranslated Japanese?

How about what I said in the post you quoted, like just translating the dialogue into no-strings-attached plain old English without stupid memes, instantly-dated references that aren't in the original lines, regional slang and phonetic spelling of English-speaking accents?

A teaser for the Girls' Frontline anime just released this morning. It looks pretty accurate to the game's early story with what they showed, and seeing them show the Dummy Links in action is pretty cool too.
