YES!!!Which is exactly why I can't stand The Nostalgia Critic and AVGN. They may be characters, but they try so damn hard to be entertaining that it's painful.
I remember watching his review of Space Jam and just shaking my head. "THEY GAVE HER BUNNY BOOBIEZ!!1" Fucking seriously, dude?I always get the feeling that Doug Walker has absolutely no idea of what he's talking about and barely does any research on what he's "reviewing".
This. The difference between TGWTG and James Rolfe is effort, hands down. Also, James Rolfe has much more talent and is a lot more charismatic. Not all of his stuff is perfect, but the quality is still leagues ahead of other reviewers.I kind of like AVGN because he actually knows what he's talking about and you can tell he rely cares.
Enough said. Doug's pretty out of touch with pop culture too. I also like when his fans call him out on things and he's just like, "OH RELAX" and acts kind of pissy. As if his entire career isn't based on calling out other's work. All the TGWTG people are just so fucking inept its halarious. Doug is alright for a time waster in the background but he never knows what he's talking about and has stupid opinions on everything. He just spergs out because it's a cheap laugh and cheap views.
The knock-offs were indeed terrible. No originality whatsoever, it's just screaming in sperging rage at some game. Considering the ads, I kinda heard about how there was drama with the advertisements. Aside from that, the mean-spirited part you mention kinda makes me want to revisit one of his episodes just to see a how mean-spirited it was (or at least with another reviewer who apparently seems to be a despise MLP now *before, he was brony* simply because he now despises the show for things he doesn't like. *Said dislike is just sperg levels*)AVGN was never "great" but the scads of knockoffs, thescreaming obscenities is awful.
NC was sometimes funny, but the more I watched, the worse it got. Many times it would be very mean-spirited and other times he was simply being an asshat. That and the ads.
Rolfe does have more talent since he has been doing this stuff since 06. Even then, while his stuff can be mediocre, he can make it entertaining, especially with some of his other works.This. Look back at the Nostalgia Critic, I agree since the character pretty much spergs out.Enough said. Doug's pretty out of touch with pop culture too. AVGN is best when he's just being critical and genuinely frustrated rather than "angry". All of the juvenile shit-humor really sails past me and honestly drags down what is otherwise some pretty funny stuff.
"What were they thinking?!" is a whole lot funnier to me than when he goes off about how he'd rather be eating skunk assholes than playing a certain game.
In regards to Rolfe having talent as a filmmaker, I kinda remember seeing on his site a video he made a long time ago. It did have some good production values for a home movie.Rolfe actually has talent as a filmmaker, that's what he genuinely enjoys doing (notice the production values are higher than Doug's), as opposed to just screaming about video games and hoping to be an Internet celebrity. I also have to agree with Some JERK's feelings about AVGN.
One thing to add to Rolfe and his AVGN character is that, if I recall correctly, he pretty much started it as a joke he shared with friends.Rolfe was always a filmmaker first, game-reviewer second. He's been making films far longer than he's been reviewing games, and when AVGN took off he immediately went to work trying to find a way to turn it into a film. If you watch any of the 'behind the scenes' videos on the AVGN he flat out admits it. Another thing people seem to miss is that the nerd isn't just like Rolfe playing himself as an asshole (like how Walker plays the critic), he's supposed to be a parody of obsessive spergs who excessively rage at video games; so in a way he was making fun of his copycats before they even started making videos. It's kind of hard to compare Rolfe to the other angry critics because from a technical standpoint what he's doing is a lot different.
Yeah, when you watch the first three AVGN videos he plays a grown up nerd who was traumatized by shitty videogames, then around the fourth episode when it was starting to become a regular show he turned the character into a rageoholic sperg. One thing to add to Rolfe and his AVGN character is that, if I recall correctly, he pretty much started it as a joke he shared with friends.

That I heard about, Doug Walker being a nice guy as Rolfe. Really, he and James Rolfe pretty much just play characters that sperg review some movie or game. As for wanting to please everyone, that would be a problem of Doug's since he doesn't know what he is talking about. I could speak more on that but I pretty much lost interest in the Nostalgia Critic a year or two back. Only reason I'd watch again is to see some old reviews and maybe see what he has reviewed lately. (last review of his I seen was Foodfight. Needless to say about sperging, it is a terrible movie and before that, it was Son of Mask. Only thing I'll remember is the intro sketch where Satan's daughter or Satan himself *Not the one from this forum* sent NC Son of Mask and before that in the sketch some guy told Satan the worst thing he did was season 3 of MLP:FiM. Apparently the guy who made that cameo "joke" has a sperging chip on his shoulder against a cartoon because he hates it now.)I want to add that, most people say that the NC isn't as good as the AVGN, because the Rolfe's life is always been making films... and that's true, but most people forget the fact that the Doug Walker isn't as good when making videos as the NC (or even as himself) because he started as an illustrator, he is a profesional illustrator and is just now that he has time to be what he also wanted to be, an actor or film director, he's not as good as Rolfe in that area, but that's for obvious reasons.
Another thing that people need to have in mind, is that, Doug Walker is actually a very nice guy, just as nice as Rolfe is, he never complains because his videos are re-uploaded, which is a big contrast with the other people that work with him, he also never gets mad at haters or his fanbase, and while he tends to commit mistakes because he wants to please everyone, that doesn't means that he doesn't knows what he's talking about.

Yeah, that can be a problem when communicating in what to say. Not having the right words can hurt what one tries to say, not to mention that trying to execute the message one gives. Never heard about the chubby guy from the Adventure Time vlogs though. It's fine if you don't like it, is just that most people seem to think that an opinion = fact, most people say that Doug doesn't knows what he's talking about, and that's not true, he does knows what he's talking about, is just that sometimes, if not, most of the time, he just can't find the right way to comunicate what he wants to say.
The chubby guy that appeared on the Adventure Time Vlogs made some really good points, or at least, he mentioned things that i agreed with, and yet, for some reason, that guy was kinda irritating for me, and it was because he didn't knew how to say what he had to say.
