And if I may be honest? Every fan made "better version" of something I've ever seen is worse than the original. Yes, even for the SW Prequels.

That's not really the fault of the fan editor though; the footage itself is terrible and can't be salvaged no matter what way you cut it. You can't change it, its stylistically designed to be that way, but you can diminish the effects of it.

Doug once said he wouldn't touch Srar Wars Episode 1 because there was another video that was a much better deconstructing of it. Has Doug gone back on his statement?
Doug always does. Remember the whole "Retirement of the NC" shit?

Well I saw it, and honestly. His idea's not too terrible. Jabba felt wasted.

But at the same time, Critic doesn't seem to realize how budget and settings work. Jabba's a desert slug, he'd look really out place on the forest moon. Plus he's fat, you really expect him to do much of anything compared to the Ewoks? Nor does he seem to realize that Han was frozen due to the uncertainly of Lucas and Ford wanting the character to return. Plus it made for a great character moment. So to change that would be a huge slap to the face.

My own "edit" would probably require me to travel back through time or somehow get the actors to shoot new footage and replace Jake Lloyd with Dakota Fanning with a short haircut.

If you're gonna use time travel and recasting to save the pictures, you should cast Jackie Gleason as kid Anikin, and Heath Ledger as big Anikin.

Of course if we're allowed to use time travel, the best option would be attempting to save George and Marcia Lucas's marriage.

...blockbusters are specifically written to cater to a broad audience during the summer months, are supposed to have huge spectacle, they are supposed to be fun and enjoyable, not "The English Patient."

...It's like he wants to seem smart for having a dissenting opinion. And I think Doug should acknowledge his weaknesses--he's great at writing rants, but he sucks at doing a full on story and comedy.

And that's why I don't like the mentality of most critics to begin with, they all think they can do better when they can't...Even I know what makes terrible art, yet I produce it (hence why I rarely post any of my own works).

Most internet reviewers are the same. You can criticize the thing you're reviewing, but be damn well prepared to have everyone else say you or your media suck.

Back when I used to watch NC and Linkara and heard them rail on about these things, I didn't think much of it. Looking at it now, I've noticed that when these people try to write stories for their review shows, I can't remember a time where they didn't use something that wasn't already created by someone else. They get goofy costumes and props of something they like, use it in the shows, fans like the references, and other people cringe or roll their eyes. These same people review works from whatever medium is in their area of "expertise" and rail on about what they would've done differently, and it left me thinking. Let's say for the sake of argument that they somehow managed to get that chance to make a professional movie with all the workings. I think that if that happened, they'd be at a loss. It seems to me that these people can only look at media from what they dislike about it, and I'll bet their movie would reflect that. It'd be laden with references only they would understand, and apart from a few sycophants, likely wouldn't appeal to a wide group of people. Internet critics can go on and on about focus groups, charts, and show up "analysts" or "Peter Soulless", but they aren't fooling anyone. When I think of these critics now, I think of one of my favorite quotes from the movie, Birdman:

We don't need to speculate. Doug alone raised ninety grand on Indiegogo. Adjusted for inflation, that's still enough to fund Primer, Brother, Slacker, and El Mariachi all at the same time. But the Walker Brothers and Michaud are so bad with money they couldn't even put together a studio that looked better than Doug's goddamn living room.

Then there's Lewis. He raised sixty grand for his movie. That's enough to cover the budget for Clerks even counting for inflation, plus several thousand in change for tranny hookers, and Kevin Smith isn't even a good or knowledgeable filmmaker. Even by those standards Lewis shit the bed.

It's not like we're even talking about people with no experience. They've been shooting successful Net shows for years and they still can't put together anything above a middle school fan film. Fucking Kevin Smith isn't that incompetent.

I'd probably enjoy watching that more than I would than any of TGWTG's attempts at filmmaking. And say what you want about AVGN's film, at least he's got some knowledge as to how it works.

I prefer internet critics that do more than just complain about the plot, yeah. My favorite reviewers go deeper, into the technical and historical aspects of what they're bashing. AVGN is decent about this, as is Film Brain, and in the past couple of years I've been enjoying this more obscure one, Musical Hell.

So I was watching Doug’s Top 20 Favorite Films of All Time. One of him was Ed Wood’s (Bride of the Monster, Plan Nine from Outer Space, etc.) biopic by Tim Burton. He talks about how he learned a lot about a director’s perceptive from the plot and his fears that like the character he’s too self-absorbed to realize he’s engendering worthlessness. Basically he can’t bring himself to admit that he’s part of culture not unlike that the film portrays, people who think they’re better than they are and become mocked for it.

You know if there’s anything you can take away from this place, it’s that some peoples’ dreams for whatever reason just aren’t meant to be (fuck that’s why this forum exists in the first place).
