Don't necessarily have an issue with one nation buying another's territory as long as both nations and the people impacted accept it. Probably could have just sold Crimea instead of just lease Sevastopol to Russia and call it a day for the time being. That's what the US did with Mexico to get all of the Southwest (and so did probably most of the colonial powers) so it's not really unprecedented.Maybe, I heard there were attempts, but essentially the West bought Ukraine first and had unlimited money to throw at it, so it did not end up being a viable option.
Not ideal but sometimes you've got to bite the bullet and rebuild your strength first if you want to take back territory you think is yours. If the Chinese had gotten impatient and tried to reclaim Hong Kong or Macau in the 50's, they would have gotten smoked.
