I was honestly shocked that no one has made a thread about this yet, so here we go!

Gaza violence: Israel defends actions as 55 Palestinians killed

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has said his military was acting in self defence during violence on the Gaza border that left dozens of Palestinians dead.

Some 55 were killed and 2,700 wounded by Israeli troops, Palestinian officials said, on the deadliest day of violence since the 2014 Gaza war.

The Palestinian Authority's leader condemned a "massacre". The UN spoke of "outrageous human rights violations".

The violence came as the US opened a controversial embassy in Jerusalem.

The move of the US embassy from Tel Aviv has incensed Palestinians, who claim eastern Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

They see the US move as backing Israeli control over the whole of the city, which Israel regards as its indivisible capital.

Palestinians were demonstrating on Monday as they have been for six weeks as part of a protest, orchestrated by Gaza's Islamist rulers Hamas, called the "Great March of Return".

However, Monday's protests - and more planned for Tuesday - are the culmination, as they mark the anniversary of Israel's creation in 1948 and what Palestinian's term the Nakba or Catastrophe, referring to the hundreds of thousands of their people who subsequently fled their homes or were displaced in the war that followed.

Monday also coincided with the dedication ceremony for the US embassy.

Israel said some 40,000 Palestinians had taken part in "violent riots" at 13 locations along the Gaza Strip security fence.

Palestinians hurled stones and incendiary devices, while the Israeli military used tear gas and live fire from snipers.

Mr Netanyahu defended his military, saying: "Every country has an obligation to defend its borders.

"The Hamas terrorist organisation declares its intention to destroy Israel and sends thousands to breach the border fence in order to achieve this goal. We will continue to act with determination to protect our sovereignty and our citizens."

An Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman said soldiers fired on those engaged in "terrorist activity and not on demonstrators, who were dispersed by usual means such as tear gas and according to the rules of engagement".

Announcing three days of mourning, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said: "Today once again, the massacres against our people continue."

He also condemned the US embassy move, saying: "We hear that they opened an embassy today. It is a settlement, not an embassy. A US settlement in East Jerusalem."

The violence in Gaza drew conflicting reactions in the international community:

  • White House spokesman Raj Shah said: "The responsibility for these tragic deaths rests squarely with Hamas... Hamas is intentionally and cynically provoking this response"
  • EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and the UK called for restraint
  • Germany said Israel had the right to defend itself but should do so proportionately. France condemned the violence
  • Turkey said the US shared responsibility with Israel for a "vile massacre" and that it was recalling its ambassadors from both the US and Israel
  • One of the strongest statements came from UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, who condemned the "shocking killing of dozens, injury of hundreds by Israeli live fire"
  • South Africa also recalled its ambassador to Israel, condemning "the indiscriminate and grave manner of the latest Israeli attack"

So far the body count is in excess of 50, with thousands more getting fucked up!

So, thoughts?

I love how the media is actually giving legitimacy to the Palestinian's "Look what you made us do!"-type justification for being violent psychos.

Yes, I'm sure the big-nosed slasher-movie villains that are Israel just opened fire on an entire crowd of Palestinian babies. Self-defense isn't an excuse if you're higher on the Oppression Stack than your attackers, I guess.

I hardly think either side in this is purely in the right, but Palestine's basically devolved into a barbarian horde at the gates at this point.

It's time they found a resolution to this problem. Some sort of, i dont know, final solution.

I don’t agree with the decision but I’m sick of these guys having massive temper tantrums when they don’t get their way and playing the victim when shit like this happens. They did the same thing when moving the embassy was announced so I’m not surprised it escalated even further.

Well if you didn't want to get riddled with holes then maybe you shouldn't storm a sovereign nation's border en masse. I do love it when Palestine puts out all of these highly-choreographed pictures to try and paint themselves as the victims, though. There sure are an awful lot of women and children in these crowds, aren't there? There's not a single healthy, military-aged man anywhere to be found, it's all just babies and pregnant women. Weird!

I especially love the enormous tire fire they lit right in front of the border, all the flaming kites they were sending over the border to try and start brush fires, this 2006-era edgy motherfucker, and how everyone's acting like they've just been brutally injured but they barely even have so much as a scratch on them. Anti-Israel Palestinian photo-ops are fantastic, I never get tired of these awful bullshit artists. For God's sake, at least invest in a fake bucket of blood or spray someone with a ketchup bottle to try and make it look believable, for once.

The holy land should be dirty bombed. Cover all those shitty looking biege cities in radioactive isotopes for the next 500 years. The fuck else of value is there? Oranges? Super models? We as a planet don't need to kickoff world war three over some fucking rock.

The Palestinians are purposefully bringing children to these protests so they can toss them up on the sacrificial alter and make martyrs out of them in the name of their psychotic religion. Anybody who doesn't(or won't) understand this simple reality is a goddamn fool. Ignoring, or refusing to accept, this simple realty doesn't make one "enlightened", it doesn't make you "woke", it just makes you a goddamned fool.

No, the Israelis aren't dropping bombs, or firing missiles, or lobbing mortars into a distant crowd of "peaceful protesters" that are just standing there like sheep. What they're doing is using non-lethal deterrents to try and disperse the crowd, and direct, targeted fire on people who are actively engaged in attacking their border walls.

The Palestinians brought children into this knowing full well that they were going to use them in what essentially amounts to unarmed attacks against the heavily-defended walls of a hostile combatant. They do this to their own children.

I can't even wrap my head around that kind of derangement. That's just not even human. For the Israelis, it must be like they're being attacked by orcs.

"What can men do against such reckless hate?"

It's a giant tantrum. They're not even putting it in disputed territory. Even if there were a two state settlement and even if the borders of Jerusalem were changed, it's in a part of West Jerusalem they're not even claiming and that has belonged to Israel since 1948. One could argue the act is needlessly provocative but Israel is maybe the only country in the world not allowed to decide where its own capital is.

These assholes all ganged up to attempt to wipe Israel off the face of the map in 1967 and the entire Arab world got its asses handed to them. Well, guess what? Starting a war of aggression, then losing it like a bunch of fucking losers, has consequences.

Not just that, but sending them there with nothing but bolt cutters and other implements of destruction trying to destroy the border fence. Most of the action here was nonlethal, rubber bullets and tear gas and the like, but they use live ammunition when you're literally trying to invade the country.

You can bet if a bunch of Mexicans charged a border checkpoint with bolt cutters and tire irons trying to invade America, they'd get shot, too.

I find the best thing for the US to do is make a wall of both Israel and Palestine in order to keep them out of US affairs. Fuck that century long shithole.
