Everything about this woman just screams "I sit at home and google possible symptoms so I can find new medical reasons for my life failures". How on earth does she expect people to believe she suddenly developed such severe autism that she became mute, simultaneously dropping a decent amount of IQ points and yet is still capable of writing essays of fluent text exploring "higher concepts"?

Oh wait because tumblr.

I have no idea how she got away with that. In order to get the prescription glasses (assuming they weren't just coloured sunglasses) you actually have to be diagnosed by a licensed optician, normally after being tested for dyslexia. One of the tests involves you reading out a short paragraph with and without a filter to establish whether there's a difference in reading speed. How exactly did our non-verbal snowflake manage that? I highly suspect a certain someone was reading through the wikipedia page and noticed it mentioned a possible link between irlens and autism

As somebody who actually has Irlen's Syndrome I have no idea how she got away with that. Her behavior started in the late 90s, far before Tumblr or even Wikipedia. Her autism self-diagnosis, specifically, happened after she got to know a number of autistic people in a special needs program (which she was in for schizophrenia). The fact that so many people fell for it owes mainly to her impression's flaws not being immediately suspicious to the layman, and insufficient research by various media outlets into her history (she actually tried to mislead people into believing she always had autism before being called on it).

Apparently the "Bard College at Simon's Rock" that this hambone attended is not the same Bard College that Reuben G. Baron attended. Otherwise I'd say there's something they put in the lunch meat over there that turns kids into stuttering/nonverbal, hairy, unibrowed autists.

They have the same umbrella entity. Bard College at Simon's Rock is an "early" college for gifted students.

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't some autists just not care about appearance? Either way, yeah this caricature is super insulting

Many autistic people prioritize comfort over appearance due to sensory sensitivity. Certain articles of clothing can irritate autistic people and cause a sensory overload. Things like socks, long sleeves, tights, rings, watches, or just clothes made out of certain fabrics or materials will be avoided for the sake of comfort.

There are plenty of autistic people who, though they may dress strangely, will at least maintain a basic level of hygiene. This is obviously much more difficult for lower functioning autistic people, but Amanda's appearance, for somebody who is able to communicate so clearly, is downright slovenly. I feel like I can smell her through the screen. She looks like someone whose IQ is legit 85, but her writing indicates someone of a much higher IQ. Somebody with an IQ of 85 would not be able to write at her level, period. Her stubborn insistence that this isn't at all made up only makes her more suspicious.

Quite frankly it disgusts me and I'm amazed she's still tolerated in the community.

This kind of reminds me of Rachel Dolezal convincing people for years that she was actually black. In Amanda's case, she's a tumblr-style self-diagnoser that has made people believe that she is genuinely disabled.
Humanity is stupid.

Just spotted this on the abaggs blog.

Anyway, I have a whole bunch of questions about this craziness from a personal and professional standpoint. When and how did she get to Vermont? That's my biggest one. When did she stop speaking? When did she decide "hey, let me crap myself"? Where's mom now?

You know, just in case you had questions about her hygiene. :briefs:

I once saw a post that this person made that pointed out how making those long lists of (mostly innocuous) words that are ableist doesn't actually counteract ableism. I suppose even a lolcow can be right about something once in a while.

I think the reason Amanda doesn't like to associate themself with SJWs is because they don't 100% align themself with the current tumblr groupthink, since their SJ views likely stem from the pre-Tumblr era. However, given that "SJW" is more broadly defined to mean "anyone who uses their view of 'social justice' to manipulate people and do shitty things", I'd say that this thread is a good indicator that Amanda is actually an SJW more than not. (To be honest though, I personally I think the whole "SJW"/"Anti-SJW" dichotomy has become rather meaningless, but that's a topic of conversation for another day).

She appearntly has a lawyer who has track down people to tell them not to talk about the "before time"
slate said:
I exchanged emails with one of her old acquaintances. Although he confirmed that the statements he wrote online were accurate, he couldn’t say anything else: Baggs’ lawyer had contacted him and warned that such statements could result in legal action.

I really want to see the CNN interview

Now I've seen everything. At least until you guys dig up the next freak. If what other people are saying is true, this takes "I was only pretending to be retarded" to a whole other horrifying level.

God..what happened.
She looked normal most of her life in earlier pictures, some even pretty in a different type way. What a mystery.

Nothing is more suspicious than shutting down people telling the truth with legal action.

Remember when Ebon Lupus got a lawyer to get his article off of ED? The one that existed because he doesn't shut up about fucking dogs?

There's links to a lot of the CNN stuff in the wikipedia entry and the callout blogspot. I'd find them for you, but my wifi's being a cunt and I'm typing this on my phone rn.

2: Were these advocates Autism Speaks? Cause fuck them.
No, not Autism Speaks. Amanda is with the Neurodiversity movement, organizations like Autistic Self-Advocacy Network, Not Dead Yet, which are run by autistic people. Autism Speaks is mostly parents, and isn't really big on things like self-advocacy or disability rights, so a lot of autistic people don't like them. It's a complicated issue.

Autism Speaks is kind of the worst.

Nominally run by autistic people, mind you. There's a long-standing problem with self-diagnosers and fakers like her trying to get a piece of the autistic pie. Autism activism is in a messy place right now.

But if there's one good thing she's done for the movement, it's setting herself up as a concrete counterargument to the "self-diagnosis is harmless and fun!" wankers.

I can't believe you didn't mention that on her blog she's talking about how the drainage bag (you know, a bag of pee flappin' in the breeze) and the suspenders in this picture makes her look like a cyborg.

I know that when you're ill (which she seems to be at least in some way) fashion is usually put aside for comfort and convenience, but...why does the pee bag need to be out like that.
