like others have said the idea of a video game union is really dumb, it's not a specialized task with few skilled workers that the rest of society depends on. that's for linemen and dock workers. at the end of the day you have a job in the arts, which means you're expendable unless you're the top 0.00001% you'll just be thrown aside when they're done with you or if you ask for anything more. that doesn't mean studios should be treating them like cattle with 100 hour work weeks during crunch, but you should never allow yourself to be in that position in the first place. get a real skill or real job on the side that's more important than drawing concept art or modeling hyperrealistic dumpsters.
Instead of Discord, why not use Slack or fucking Microsoft Teams? Something professional. I am seeing a blurring between the lines of work and "relaxation" lately, and people can't seem to be able to distinguish it.
boy do i have a surprise for you

Nigga they had a discord server for their union? WTF are you talking about that is pure insanity. It's one thing to call your union rep and ask for advice on your rights it's another thing to be texting in a 250 user server about shit that happens at work.

Almost certainly unrelated but funny lolcow crossover: There is a Dabblezilch who claims to be Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser (despite also claiming to be many years younger than Houser and always short on cash). He claims he scripted every GTA, knows the product roadmap for upcoming versions, and was fired from Rockstar for being a cishet white man. Oh and he’s a proud white nationalist.

Seems like an odd place to work.

I hope this causes Rockstar to be sued for a gorillion dollars and GTA goes dormant. Sorry. I love it, but I hate what it's become since 5's online mode took over, and I can see the writing on the wall that 6 is going to have disasterous consequences for the gaming industry. All the worst business practices you can imagine will be shoved into this game, and everyone'll be lining up to copy it.

So this is the reason for another delay. No wonder the development is slow.

thats why you just dont pick up the phone for hr. leave those retards on hold forever and you can not get fired. boss is too god damned cowardly to do the dirty work himself and so are his cronies
I trust neither side of this shitshow. I do not trust Rockstar to not be firing people so they can hire jeets for a fraction of the cost and I don't trust unions in the yar 2025 to not being full of communist subversion.
That's basically my feelings on the situation. A good union will fight for a company's employees, but most of them end up trying to seize way more power than the employees would ever need. They may not be mafia-backed these days but they have the social mafia on their side.

The feeling of being discarded is bad - and the description of a colleague having a "panic attack" really seemed like someone needed to tell him to chill the fuck out. People have their contracts terminated, and that's life man; at the same time, Rockstar needs to be up to speed with the conditions of how the employees and how they must be treated. Panic attack just seems too much... I don't know.
You bring a good point, expendability is a thing in this market.

What the shit is this? Trannycord is NOT FOR PROFESSIONAL USE, NIGGERS!!!! It tries to market itself for that, yet we have Slack, for fuck sake!

"Which is the truly heartbreaking part, as for us in the Union, all of our ambition was to make R* a happier, fairer, safer and more equitable place"

This is actually a low-key good sign for GTA 6. If Rockstar didn't care, they would just let them fuck around and have a saints row tier disaster. Instead, they actually fired these losers.

I am aware of one employee who had a panic attack at this moment, and HR hung up on them during this panic attack not caring at all about their wellbeing.
Immediately I suspect most of these were problem employees already
I got laid off with maybe 20 minutes notice two weeks after I'd moved into the first house I bought. I was still able to handle the call like a professional.

"Union busting"?
"Unfair dismissals"?
In the games industry?
Rockstar W
Over 250 more to go.
Asking for a soft working environment in like a small indie studio is one thing and demanding it in a cutthroat industry studio is another.

Unions in creative environments cause nothing but delays. You got hired at one of THE studios and you couldn't handle it and wanted to start a union so that your job would be secure and you don't have to work harder or experience crunch time.

Productivity, efficiency, and accuracy is what makes your job secure and without knowing basic human decency and English jeets can and will replace you for a fraction. And they will be replaced for faster and cheaper jeets.

Get better instead of starting unions when burnout begins to creep in. You were in it for the passion, but now it's too much?

On the one hand, Rockstar Games and Take Two by extension are known to prioritize "crunch" from their video games even before Red Dead Redemption 2. Their strive for perfection and secrecy is a blessing and curse at the expense and willingness of their employees.

However, lately the gaming industry has been used as a vehicle to push politics, which in turn has attracted volatile people that are ticking time bombs. Look at them the wrong way, they'd go straight to HR with a complaint and lawsuit. Add insult to injury, the solution would be to outsource employment through contract work and third world citizens that'd work for cheap.

With a company as protective and secretive as Rockstar Games, who taught it'd be a good idea to unionize grievances in a public platform like Discord of all places? Already, they're deemed untrustworthy and narrow-minded. Let's not forget how several employees started crying about work-from-home being revoked since the recent leaks occured.

There are no good guys in this situation; the supposed "victims" from this are just worse.

Any unions that somehow exist, but are not under any of the above conditions are typically anemic unions that have no leverage and no power in negotiations with management. Frankly, they might as well be condition 2 unions.
Video game unions make even less sense than that. Look at that Build a rocket boy Mindseye shit. The employees had a union, but the game failed and the studio has no revenue for another project, wtf do they expect the studio to do, just pay them out of thin air? GTA 6 clearly isn't going to flop, but at the same time this is a game studio that can't seem to do more than one thing at a time to rotate employees from one project to another as things progress over time so there's no continual production.

At least with shit like movie and TV production, the unions aren't necessarily all company specific and that's an industry where one project after another occurs.

And of course at something like a dev studio, it'll be the people that are easily replaceable or not pulling their weight that will want to unionize as no one worth a shit would have any incentive to do so.

Fucking based.

Cause delays and make it harder to get rid of goldbrickers. God I saw how hard it was to fire someone at normal place, took over a year to get the documenation together to support the case, including providing a PIP and documenting non-compliance.

I can only imagine the hell of unions.

ou should never allow yourself to be in that position in the first place. get a real skill or real job on the side that's more important than drawing concept art or modeling hyperrealistic dumpsters.
That's the issue with a lot of these modern retardo unions. If people had a sack, they wouldn't be getting abused. But its because millenials and zoomers never learned how to handle conflict.

The employees had a union, but the game failed and the studio has no revenue for another project, wtf do they expect the studio to do, just pay them out of thin air?
Pretty much this. Most unions are absolutely retarded and don't understand that if the business isn't profitable their is no money to pay their retrarded salaries or fund their dumb benefits.
Fuck this union, but also fuck R*. in short

There are no good guys in this situation; the supposed "victims" from this are just worse.

I have been laid off once (I've had contracts expire but I knew that shit was coming). While waiting for my supervisor to come back with some forms about return of company equipment, the HR lady overseeing the process (who we called the grim reaper because she she was always who HR sent to lay off meetings) told me "I was the calmest person she'd done this with". I told her I had significant savings, a valuable skill set, and had already been looking for another job when the business direction change was announced. It was inconvenient, but I guess some people break down or get angry.

Another employer was bought up and switched from a 15th and 31st pay model to every two weeks, which resulted in a 1 week lag of paychecks. the number of people in the employee IM channels losing their shit was astounding, people talking about having to cancel vacations, looking at payday loans, etc. All because their check was delayed a week.
I can't fathom living like that where a week disruption destroys your fiances. People are retarded.

The number of people I've encountered over the years making close to or above 100k a year, who have zero savings has always astounded me. Fresh out of school, I get it. But when you're talking about grown adults who have had 15-20 year careers in their field and lose their fucking minds because they won't get paid for a month is ridiculous(being pissed about a payroll or HR fuckup is one thing, but that shouldn't cause a financial panic). And of course the lower down you go in salary, the worse it gets. Not that I discuss pay with colleagues, but I have discussed shit like having an emergency savings account that could last 6 months at a minimum covering living basics and people would look at me like I'm insane. Yet these same people when you actually look at their lives, they don't have any assets(renting an apartment and buying a depreciating car at $80k are not assets), no kids they're spending money on(children are expensive), they have nothing to show for it.
