So it appears a major diplomatic crisis is brewing in the world's arsehole as Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, the UAE and Yemen have ceased all air, sea and land trade with Qatar, with accusations that they are destabilising the region by funding terrorism.

The Qatari stock exchange is already down 6.5% and all flights have been forced to divert over Iranian airspace.

Official statement from the Qatari government.

Get your popcorn ready dudes, as this is just another chapter in the Iran-Saudi Arabia Cold War.

I think SA started playing the blaming game towards their neighbors is because they want to shift everyone's attention away from them.

Since Saudi Arabia's foundation in 1932, Islamic extremism has already happened. The wahabbi rules supported by this country is the reason why disasters of the world happened, isis and 9/11.
There are already tales from people who lived under the Islamic state, they mentioned that most recruited terrorists are Saudis.

But because oil.

I hope we can find a better energy power than oil, less terrorism and less pollution.

Also as long as we need oil, ww cant do shit about saudi arabia. Period. Qatar doesn't have that leverage.

The West can survive without OPEC oil. Other countries, not so much. OPEC countries have been cutting back production to try to keep the prices up because cheaper oil trashes their economies. Even natural gas prices have hit a slump.

Venezuela has the largest oil reserves in the world and the US is currently considering imposing sanctions against them. The same could be done to Saudi Arabia if the will was there.

I dont think its so much the oil, i guess i should have said SA is able to deliberately fuck with the stock market in a way most countries couldnt dream of.

We're not going to disentangle ourselves from the Saudis without making some tough decisions. Governments need to stop just kicking the problem along to the next guy. Populations have been willing to undergo enormous hardship in the past for less.

We need to be willing to do to the Saudis what the Saudis have done to Qatar and let the chips fall where they may.

Thats far easier said than done. Wait till gas is 9$ a gallon see what that wpuld do to the economy, shipping rates would skyrocket and thats just sctratching the surface. Your absoultely right that, the band aid has to be torn off fast and hard at spme point, i just dont envy the politician or businessman that has to break that news to their boss/voters.

The idea America is dependent on foreign oil is a myth. We only import it from the Saudis because no one lets the government drill at home. We can easily meet or exceed the amount we get from the Middle East and it'll be considerably cheaper than buying from a bunch of OPEC crooks who send that money right into ISIS's pocket.

Correct, if we built the infrastructure in a few years wed be self reliable, what about tomorrow, or next week. Youd have to do this simultaniously with getting is off SA oil (the one time weening is an appropiate word and i cant use it), which SA will see coming a mile away like they did woth fracking.

We could have built that infrastructure by now. This conversation about the need to do something about reliance on ME oil "eventually" has been going on for a long time.

"Russian" hackers. Who has bets these hackers are CIA or Israeli employed and never even drank any vodka before the age of 15?

UAE is now banning everyone with a Qatari passport from travelling to or through UAE and threatening to imprison "Qatari sympathisers" (ie, anyone who criticises the current action against Qatar).

Turkey is deploying troops to Qatar and Turkey and Iran are in talks to secure food and water for Qatar.

yeah, nah Part of the reason the Saudis wave their dick around so confidently is because of US support in general and willingness to sell them arms in particular.

Edit. Senegal has now cut diplomatic ties with Qatar.

What's not good about this? Is Prince Salman a cad? Or is it that replacing their former counterterrorism czar with this guy a bad move?

The latter. Not that I think there's actually anyone "good" in the Saud line of succession.

Like most things with Saudi politics it's a tossup as far as Western interests are concerned. Salman is much more of a reformer than Nayef was (he's a longstanding advocate that the Saudis must find a different income stream than oil and soon), but he's also the one who started the price war over oil to try and disrupt US fracking efforts. When that screwed over Saudi Arabia as much as it hurt anyone else he imposed harsh austerity measures on his people while his family continued to live like gods. He's also been suspected of funding wahhabist mosques in the Balkans and western Europe.
