After an entire decade of hibernation, one could say Beat 'em ups started making a comeback thanks to Xbox Live Arcade, it was spearheaded on the late 2000's by Castle Crashers, Scott Pilgrim and a bunch of arcade ports, then on early 2010's other games started following suit, like Double Dragon Neon, Dragon's Crown and Charlie Murder:
On the second half of 2010's, the genre started gaining more popularity on the indie scene, and while there was some stinkers, like Double Dragon IV, River City Ransom Underground and 99Vidas, there were still some major bangers:
Mother Russia Bleeds:
Bud Spencer & Terence Hill - Slaps And Beans:
Fight 'N Rage:
River City Girls:
But on 2020 everything changed with the Streets of Rage 4 release, that set the genre on a renaissance notorious as the Boomer Shooters one:
Then since the we had boom of Beat 'em ups of varying qualities, most notorious ones being:
Classic River City finally getting new games outside of 3DS:
The TMNT game that shellshocked everyone with its fanservice:
Mayhem Brawler, a game with an alright gameplay but packed with millennial meta-humor:
A new Double Dragon game created by the Streets of Red devs and was more serviceable than IV:
Both River City Girls and Slaps and Beans got sequels:
And on the future we may we even get a Toxic Crusaders game that doesn't suck:
While were at it we might even talk about some fan-made games, like the famous Streets of Rage Remake and TMNT:Rescue-Palooza!
