After an entire decade of hibernation, one could say Beat 'em ups started making a comeback thanks to Xbox Live Arcade, it was spearheaded on the late 2000's by Castle Crashers, Scott Pilgrim and a bunch of arcade ports, then on early 2010's other games started following suit, like Double Dragon Neon, Dragon's Crown and Charlie Murder:

On the second half of 2010's, the genre started gaining more popularity on the indie scene, and while there was some stinkers, like Double Dragon IV, River City Ransom Underground and 99Vidas, there were still some major bangers:
Mother Russia Bleeds:
Bud Spencer & Terence Hill - Slaps And Beans:
Fight 'N Rage:
River City Girls:
But on 2020 everything changed with the Streets of Rage 4 release, that set the genre on a renaissance notorious as the Boomer Shooters one:
Then since the we had boom of Beat 'em ups of varying qualities, most notorious ones being:
Classic River City finally getting new games outside of 3DS:
The TMNT game that shellshocked everyone with its fanservice:
Mayhem Brawler, a game with an alright gameplay but packed with millennial meta-humor:
A new Double Dragon game created by the Streets of Red devs and was more serviceable than IV:
Both River City Girls and Slaps and Beans got sequels:

And on the future we may we even get a Toxic Crusaders game that doesn't suck:

While were at it we might even talk about some fan-made games, like the famous Streets of Rage Remake and TMNT:Rescue-Palooza!

I've been addicted to Streets of Rage 4 on my steam Deck. I didn't think I'd really spend much time in the survival mode but it has easily eclipsed any time spent in campaign. Roguelike beat 'em up is a good ass time. I'm excited this genre has had a bit of comeback because I love games that let me punch dudes in the face.

I'd also recommend Fight 'n Rage to anyone looking for another good indie beat em up, provided you aren't turned off by pixelated titties or furries (though you spend most of your time genociding them)

Damn, I would've thought SoRR got hard-axed everywhere you couldn't find a questionable download link for, since that used to be the case for finding an SoRR download way back when.

I posted about the underwhelming G.I. Joe game announcement on other thread, but here I will post about another underwhelming game announcement that I am actually looking forward to, the comeback of the SNES Rushing Beat series:
Things to note:
1-They will keep blackwashed Douglas from the western releases.
2-People are more interested if they can play as the characters from the sequels.
3-They were clearly aiming for "The Takeover" visuals but only managed to get "Cobra Kai" ones with their skills.

While we are at it, let's talk about these games too:
The Takeover is an interesting game that managed to satiate the hunger for the people waiting for Streets of Rage 4 thanks to its unique visuals and great soundtrack, but unfortunately compared to other pre-SoR4 games it failed to create a more unique identity and gets easily overshadowed by the real deal, it is worth checking on sale at least.
On other thread I claimed Cobra Kai to be "Double Dragon Neon gone wrong", but now I can clearly see as the best commercially available Brazilian Beat 'em up game on the market, and that is actually a very easy feat if you consider the alternatives (99Vidas and Pulling no Punches), it also respects the source material better than another Beat 'em up released on the same year (Battletoads). Unfortunately you should avoid the sequel, is 1 step forward and 2 steps backwards kind of deal and released as an expensive buggy mess.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers never seems to get any recognition when this genre comes up. There were two great games on SNES, amazing soundtracks (not hyperbole) andcnice visuals.
As someone that absolutely HATES the SNES soundchip, the soundtrack to the power Rangers Beat-em up is REALLY good. The city rooftop one is my all time favorite track

I think we all know what the obvious answer from me is.

For real though. There's a reason the game is legendary. Sets up a classic three-player choice between the jack, speedster, and glacier, and even the usual color schemes you expect for a beat em up trio (1P - blue, 2P - red, 3P - green usually). All sorts of well-designed enemies visual and gameplay-wise, and the formula is so good it's only been improved since. The characters themselves have such memorable characterization and looks that a ton of them have become permanent additions to the cast of Street Fighter or at least mainstays in other collection series like Capcom vs Marvel/SNK/etc etc. Even Metro City's become a mainstay of Capcom straight up to being THE setting of Street Fighter 6.

Who woulda thunk I'd go from a young tough guy to mayor, too? Ever expect that if you looked at the first game in this series, or even my SF debut in Alpha 3?

Fun fact, poison is not a tranny, poison is a woman who was made into a tranny in the localization to avoid a violence against women charge in the US cause man on man violence is acceptable.

Golden Axe is the best genesis one, sorry SOR 2.
Modern beat em ups arent that good aside from SOR4 and TMNT. IDK why they all make enemies spongy as fuck including river city girls. Slaps and Beans was terrible and that made me sad cause I like Spencer and Hill.
Theres also very niche ones on Mame and retro consoles
Rastan Saga 3 which has the best pixel art but worst gameplay, just absolutely terrible.
King of dragons which is pretty good on both SNES and Mame.
Night Slashers has been mentioned and its okay, some contact damage fuckery is involved.
Theres the sailor moon game on the SNES and Mame which is good.
Captain America and the Avengers is terrible on all systems.
Controversial opinion, final fight sucks.
The Sengoku series is pretty good, Sengoku 3 especially has good pixel art.
Captain Commando is okay I think, I havent played in a while.
Alien Vs Predator is fucking excellent, probably the best Mame beat em up.
Punisher is also fucking great.
Saturday Night Slam Masters is okay, closer to a fighting game than a beat em up.
I dont remember much of the others in my collection but most of the others are not that good rest assured.

Because of the leveling system, in RCG is kinda understandable, but in most Beat' em ups past Castle Crashers it feels shoehorned as fuck, Scott Pilgrim being the worst offender.
Scott Pilgrim ruined a whole generation of Beat 'em ups.

I hated "Takeover". It was the blandest entry for a beat em up. Once you learn how to maneuver and handle multiple enemies you need a little extra something to keep you engaged.
Alien vs Predator is great. You had a combo/move system that was never explained (how it should be) and you gradually learned how to do amazing multiple hit attacks that a team mate could join in on. Good weapons, a special move bar(close enough), great sprites, and different areas to keep you engaged.
I think the LJN Spiderman games on super Nintendo and genesis deserve a mention just for having the most annoying AI in a beat em up. It was like Mortal Kombat 2 cpu levels of difficulty that became more of a formula to win then actually having fun.

Night Slashers remake teaser, but it looks completely barebones:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=lKZcrdcktIMShit was announced on 2021, and in 2 years they only got the art style done:
Instead of waiting for this you should play Night Slashers X Rebalance.

I don't understand how things like this happen but somehow they happen all the time. Who asked for this, who thought it was a good idea? Why waste their obviously limited budget on making the graphics worse? Ninja Saviors is the gold standard for remakes and a true 11/10 btw, ofc that was handled by the original creators, not some randos who jewed their way into acquiring the license and outsourced it to monkeys chained to keyboards.

SoR4 and Fightn Rage are two or three full tiers above almost any other turd-millennium beat em up and it's probably going to stay that way. The only thing really special about TMNT is the big budget and the license, otherwise it's "ok", but that admittedly does make it way better than the vast majority of hot garbage hitting the Steam bargain bin. At least now that everyone is following SoR4's lead instead of copying RCR "rpg elements" are no longer mandatory.

Because of the leveling system,
Combo-bloat begets hp-bloat, can't have epic 200-hit juggles in the trailer unless every random goon takes 400 hits to kill. Combos are a meme, piñata-whacking guys once at a time like King of Dragons is superior.

It's pretty bad and overhyped and furthermore it looks terrible in motion. The screenshots disguise that it's all prerendered and has megajank fugly animation.

I saw somewhere in the comments of that first video that they delisted the Johnny Turbo's Arcade port for Night Slashers? Is that true? Because that fucking sucks if that's the case.
