I think he knows on some level that he's not growing a vagina. If he genuinely thought he'd hypnotised himself into growing a vagina, why would he be cleaning it with alcohol? Unless he thinks that's what you do with vaginas.
Given he managed to confuse oestrogel with the contraceptive pill (hence why he takes a "week off" every month like you do with spacer pills) I guess that wouldn't be surprising though.

Chris genuinely believes he's growing a vagina. In the same way that Chris really does believe in magic and that he can curse people and that dreams are prophetic, he believes he's growing a vagina.

The wound itself isn't necessarily the vagina. The wound is the vagina erupting. That's going to need to heal over. (He thinks.)

He says he takes a week off each month from "buttering" himself with oestrogel. That's not how you use oestrogel (well, everything Chris is doing is "not how you use oestrogel") but that is essentially how you use the pill.

Oh no, Chris doesn't think it's the pill. Maybe he read something about them having similar effects, but he knows they're two distinct things.

He does not think it is the pill, for older women and women that go through premature menopause, estrogen is cycled to match your monthy cycle since hormone production in women is extremly cyclical in nature. Think about the stereotype people are always trying to throw at us about being crazy around ovulation and menstruation. (horny and moody maybe)
I think the estrogen break is meant to protect the reproductive organs from cancer and allow the womb to shed as usual. The break usually implies that a progesterone hormone will be used along with the break in estrogen. I saw a documentary one time about scientists in the early 20th century (from here in Europe) messing with a woman's hormones thinking it would make her breasts grow, which is stupid since you cannot mimic puberty. Chris' plan was completely useless since his Oestrogel cannot raise his blood levels of estrogen enough to do much of anything and he does not have a true and honest "duderus"

Chris' mindset is difficult for people to wrap their minds around, I think.

It begins with a fairly naive "anything is possible" type attitude about things. He is pretty ignorant and naive, so he doesn't have a great initial filter on what is possible and what isn't.

Then you apply wishful thinking. Since anything is possible, why can't the things he really wants be possible?

Finally, he actively, and shockingly effectively, pushes out doubt and thoughts about contradictory evidence. He focusses in on his implausible wish, and shuts out anything that goes against it. After doing this for a while, the wish becomes fairly close to a certainty in his mind because he has actively resisted even considering the possibility that it isn't true.

That seems to be what went on here. He doesn't know anything about biology or hypnotism, so he has no idea why it wouldn't be possible to grow a vagina. Follow that up with doing no research into it and shunning any hint that it might not be possible and he becomes more and more convinced that he is likely to grow one.
 
He treats evidence same as any other bigot. He has an idea in his mind, he deems it absolute truth because he considers himself always right, then a contradictory evidence shows up and it is dismissed on the simple ground that it does not make sense with the idea.

It's the complete reversal of the scientific process, you see it on more types of idiots than just him. Religious nuts is another example.

He thinks he is growing a vagina on his freshly shaven taint, so there is always a natural evolution with Chris. Cannot wait for the "mother of the year" saga when Chris starts carrying around two bags of flour called Reginald and Crystal. She don't need no man to raise them babies (except for himself)

It would probably be a repeat of the teddy bear of doom except....

He won't think he is pregnant without a vagina. Nowadays, he rambles about ovaries and uteruses and stuff like that. Chris has read about how sex develops in utero, so he thinks that he's just a stone's throw away from having his dick become a clitoris and his testicles become ovaries, etc. That is, if he can invoke the right magical hypnosis.

He wants to become pregnant, but he likely won't believe he's pregnant until he reaches his prerequisites.
