The German Bundestag is the representation of the people of the Federal Republic of Germany and, being vested with decisive legislative authority, its most important body. It is composed of representatives of the German people who are elected for four years in general, direct, free, equal and secret elections.

Election date

The Basic Law specifies the period in which a Bundestag election has to take place (Article 39 para. 1 of the Basic Law). In accordance with that provision, new elections are held between 46 months (at the earliest) and 48 months (at the latest) after the current electoral term has begun. If the electoral term of the Bundestag is terminated early, there have to be new elections within 60 days after the decision has been taken to dissolve the Bundestag. The electoral term of the 19th German Bundestag started on 24 October 2017 with its constituent sitting. Consequently, the date of the election will have to be within the period from Wednesday, 25 August 2021 to Sunday, 24 October 2021. Election day has to be on a Sunday or a public holiday (Section 16 of the Federal Elections Act). As a rule, Bundestag elections should not be conducted during main holiday seasons.

In consultation with the Federal Government, the Federal President has now set the election date for Sunday, 26 September 2021 (see order of the Federal President concerning the 2021 Bundestag election of 8 December 2020 (Federal Law Gazette I, p. 2769)). Irrespective of the election date, elections to the assemblies of party delegates may, at the earliest, be held 29 months after the electoral term of the Bundestag has begun, this would be from 25 March 2020 for this Bundestag election. Candidates may be elected 32 months after the electoral term has started, this means from 25 June 2020 (Section 21 (3), third sentence, of the Federal Elections Act).

Current opinion polls around the election. Union (christian democratic party) has been the leading party with Merkel for decades but it looks like it might be dethroned this year. SPD (social democratic party) has been declining as an opposition party though it is still a strong player. Grüne (enviromentalist party) has experienced rapid growth in the past few years and for the first time ever is competing in the big leagues. There are also the FPD (liberal), AfD (nationalist) and Linke (socialist) who will be relevant when a coalition will be formed.

I figured we will need this thread eventually so here it is. I will keep it updated as the election day comes closer.

The left-wing Linke which is a union of an old East German commie party and a party that formed to revolt against the SPD, because they did the direct opposite of social democracy the last time they were in power.
>Old East German commie party
So kinda like Iliescu in '89? Man, what a lousy job we've done as a whole getting rid of commie swine. In Romania, the moment they executed Ceaușescu, one of his cronies, Iliescu, took power, and started privatizing the fuck out of the Romanian industry. The Old Guard never left, just scurried away and got filthy rich instead. Romania, just like Russia and the rest of the eastern bloc, haven't still recovered from the red pest.

Even around these parts in South America, the Chilean commies are pushing for rewriting the Chilean Constitution.

I wish you good luck, German frens.

No, they never really got much power.

Fun fact: They also made a video game which was actually pretty good for a free adgame.

If it pans out, then it is as I expected. Elsewhere Greens get eviscerated, but Germans rally around their pet cause - you separate your plastic from your greens and general waste like a good Bürger! (Only Swedes are more anal
about that shit).

I like how the news tries to use the positivity to discreetly ignore to address that the fucking AfD is not far behind. That is quite a few pissed of Krauts to be sure.

Anyway got my popcorn and scotch, enjoy!

Is not far behind what, because this looks like treading water or even a slight decline, from where I am sitting.

CDU, the Greens of course! Mainly CDU, and die Linke had to eat shit this time around. FDP is stable and the AfD tards still had enough sway to hold with minimal loss.
Greens better stick to their eco driven goals, but they may largely fuck themselves by alienating the average lower income schlub with proposals that will fuck them over while dripping with condescension towards them for being [X,Y,Z} uneducated and ignorant morons, that should eat the soymeat and shut up.
Just look at the shitty Fridays for Future crap, trying it to portray it as a teenage driven movement, while it is only Gymnasia students attending that shit, and even then only a small fraction. These tards follow academia bubble driven shite the way same way as with Labour in the UK. It is so bad that even that die Linke politician Sarah Wagenknecht seems downright reasonable with similar observations of this continued detachment of the left-leaning parties from their original working class types constituents in her book "The Selfrighteous", as they lined up to disavow her. Thilo Sarrazin earlier also got the shaft for this by his SPD comrades with his publication touching on likewise inconvenient truths.
The only way this elections differs from the Dutch is that the Greens did not get eviscerated. SPD is full on LGBTWTFILOVETROONS/Inclusivity, even having the shitty flag on theirs at rallies. Coming years will show whether AfD will fade away, based on what the new coalition does. And the new coalitions better had focus their attention on the economy and ecology with minimal lipservice to the Rainbow/Diversity Gestapo and decent damage control on any global trade issues that threatens national job security. Pray they get their shit together and AfD does not gain NEW constituents.

So, for the non-German Kiwis, anyone care to breakdown how things stand and where they are likely going?
nobody won, merkels party just got 2nd place and spd and merkels cdu will try to form a government, they can form one between each other or have to tardwrangle the greens and the classical liberals into a government.

Going to be an SDP led coalition with either the CDU or the Greens and FDP. People are talking about the CDU somehow out foxing the SDP to be the lead coalition partner but I don't think it's possible. They can't get a majority without either the SDP or the Greens, who are on the same side of the ideological spectrum.

The funny thing too is that this is an exit poll. It's safe to assume that AfD voters are the least likely to agree to be polled.
