Lol, I know the Nintendo fans pretty well. They generally won't take to RPGs unless there's a marketing push or a familiar face slapped on it. That's why I don't want my favorite genre to be tied around the switch's neck. I want to see the genre grow and prosper and all these retards want is Disney Star Wars Tier Nostalgia.
Old school or new? As old school fans had the FF series, Chrono Trigger, Legend of Gaia, ect...

Did Xenoblade sell well? If it sold 2 million, probably. Did 40yo consoomers who hate anime complain about it? Probably. Getting into a dick measuring contest about sales seem (to me) to be completely immaterial to that, unless Nintendrones are complaining about it.
I was using it as an example of how many layers of marketing is needed to get these people to latch on to something that isn't in the already established safe zone. But even then it doesn't seem to work it's way into the core and expand the figurative horizon. I mean Nintendo stagnating or plateauing in output is a pretty common thing at this point. In the past they functioned better with an array of supporting studios and many of those games wound up doing close in numbers to Nintendo's own output. But since the gamecube it's mostly been just the small array of safe 1st party IPs that have lead the system. So it's quite disappointing to see one of the few newer series that actually has some level of depth not pull much closer to the top. Nintendo has already pushed Xenoblade 3 back due to Monolith being affected by covid, so it at least has more news coming out for it than other MIA titles.

I really wouldn't consider JRPGs that niche since you're having most series hit around 1 million copies, the Atelier series has had the ryza games sell over 1 million copies. Now that's a series that went from selling around 20-50k on average or topping out at 100k for a game, to then going ten times the amount within 1 or 2 game installments within the same console generation. For the longest time they were considered budget RPGs(hell I have the Saturn version and it's release variations as well as the PS2 Trilogy so that's how long I've been playing them) and the majority of the installments were made like that. Sophie was when they first started to really try and solidify the formula and get rid of things that were holding the series back.

Hell you can also look at the canyon of difference in sales figures compared to Persona and SMT.

Old school or new? As old school fans had the FF series, Chrono Trigger, Legend of Gaia, ect...
It's the newer ones mostly, if it's the older fans it's mostly the ones like Movie Bob who just engaged with surface level stuff and had a greater interest in the side material and not the actual games themselves.

Marissa Moira has been completely demoralized (pic embed below) and later complained in this very thread about the turn of events within the japanese vidya market as demonstrated by Famitsu, in spite of him often saying that things wouldn't change at all (besides things already started to get obvious several months back). He's unfortunately too dumb to actually understand that this isn't partaking in console-warring but just a mere observation of events.

This is the kind of very vocal and annoying sony fanatic we're dealing with.

Well now you're just going off the deep end.

There's been way too many times I can count where the global release got fucked because while the system or game did well in japan nothing translated into the global market. Look at the tail end of the PSP and how many global releases got canceled because every other territory didn't have all too spectacular sales. Which meant if I wanted something I'd have to import it. I mean back then it was probably easier and cheaper, but now it's a far greater pain in the ass especially since they doubled down on trade and banking retardation since then.

So it's like Japanese sales just play a small part in overall availability. Take for example Guilty Gear Strive it broke series records and it did well in a ton of places outside of japan while the Japanese sales of it just made up a minority and were not the driving force. But it's the most successful in the whole series.

Also everyone knows that consoles wars are long term fights with months favoring one system and then switching to another. You won't know the winners or losers until like 6-8 years from now.

The post you linked to isn't anything damning either, Japan has always bought Nintendo first party games. Like that's not an aberration or anything, those are all traditional series.

I think the real test of JRPG in the west will be SMT 5. Persona 5 exploded the popularity of the series (for me I played some of the older SMT games and 4 is bae) and SMT 5 is a culmination of marketing for 30 year series.

Just because you are a retarded secondary bandwagoner doesnt mean a series would be irrelevant without smash
2 million sales for a series with almost no marketing, sabotage from nintendo by keeping the stocks low and from a niche genre is pretty fucking good

Moira has weird standards when it comes to sales and especially when it comes to sales for non Sony games IIRC.

Even as a Sony fan, I remember them arguing that most Sony exclusives pre-PS4 all sucked ass and weren't worth paying attention to because they never sold above 5 million, but seemed to always ignore the fact that trends were different and that Sony had such a huge glut of 3rd party games that their first party offerings had much more competition back in the day.

So don't be surprised if they think anything sub 5 million isn't good.

You're missing the point, the games sat on the shelves for years and post-pyra announcement all the stuff on the secondary market had their prices surge because all the Consoomers then jumped on board.

And it was only specifically 2 that this happened to. 1 HD is cheaper than 2 and Xenoblade X is even cheaper. Showing that they ignored the other titles in the series even though 1 is a direct predecessor to 2 and only focused on the one that got the special treatment from marketing.

There's next to zero oversight on what's been put on the switch's e-shop. There's already pages and pages of stuff that was IOS garbage and they also have games advertised in english that have no english translation and even after downloading the instructions are not even in english. You can already get shit on there that's been thrown into those 1009 Games in One knockoff systems.

They do need some form of curation.

Well, there's always the option of warning people not to buy it, like what happened back in ye olden days. But people will still take the bait, anyways.

It isn't necessarily restricted to iOS, considering that there's quite a few half-baked console games from around a decade ago.

"BUT THE LAST OF US 2 SOLD 4 MILLION COPIES IN ONE DAY! AND WON OVER 200 AWARDS! AND XENOBLADE WON HOW MANY AWARDS AGAIN?"

-Sony Stans, probably.

How much was Xenoblade's development costs, compared to the 200 AWARD WINNING TLOU2?

Lmfao if you think personatards played that shitty game for the """""gameplay"""""

I think people forget that games like Bravely Default sold roughly 3 million copies over multiple years. Bravely Default 2 on Switch sold 1 million units. I've no doubt it'll do well on PC.

Persona 5 sold roughly 5-6 million units if you count Royal?

2 million sales on Switch is no slouch. I bought Xenoblade 2 on release and it is easily one of the worst JRPGs I've played in recent memory. The exploration sucks, the combat kinda sucks and feels sluggish compared to X/1, you constantly win the battles but lose in cutscenes, the gacha system sucks major balls. The resolution was also a joke. The game's interface had to be patched post release because the map was an unworkable mess.

I love Pyra's massive tits. I guess that's one thing I like about the game.

I'm surprised it even sold that much with all the problems it had.
