  • No, the franchise is dead.

  • NO, A FOLLOWUP WHERE LARA PREACHES BOUT SLAY QUEEN DEFEATING EVIL ORANGE MAN

  • who cares, square enix killed another franchise

haven't played shadows yet but from what I heard they squandered all progress they made with rise and even on it's own apparently it's not that good either.
Shadows had a fuckton of stuff at launch that was originally listed as DLC and wasn't implemented.

I've played both Shadows and Rise in their entirety and Shadows is much better from a gameplay perspective. You can now get Shadows with everything attached to it for dirt cheap.

It's probably the best Rainforest level in any game I've played. Tons of areas to explore, a good number of animals to kill, and a very decent variety of environments overall. The stuff the DLC added really fleshed out stuff.

Yeah, but the plot is dumb as fuck, doesn't go anywhere, and I actively sympathized with the villain over Lara.

I disagree, Rise felt more balanced and polished. Shadow's only selling point were the tombs and puzzles but the absence of combat shows. It wouldn't be so bad if they at least fixed the platforming but collision and Lara's jumps are inconsistent as ever. Jungle was pretty good but temples and challenge tombs all looked the same to me. It really should have been going back to the basics, just Lara and the jungles, no boring NPCs, fetch quests or learning the same skills all over again. I'm just saying after the two games Shadow felt incredibly tedious.

yeah, but the villain himself is a tyrannic cultist who's only motivation is that he hates colonialists, nevermind that Paititi is a shithole stuck in archaic times that some of these people clearly wanted to leave. Cultural synthesis is essential for advancing a civilization, colonialism was necessarily and some cultures are superior, it's one thing sjws can't comprehend.

sorry for double posting, but I believe this is the statistic mentioned earlier.

I played one of the originals on those colorful CRT 1st gen iMacs and the N-gage port of TR1, as well as seeing the first Angelina Jolie movie, so I could call myself somewhat of a Tomb Raider expert.

Also they were all shit. I think I own the 2013 one but I'm not planning on playing it.

You left out the part where he was originally kidnapped from said tribe by the cult, and has risen to the top solely to prevent the cult from fucking around with them even further. Your points aren't wrong, but given that his last request to Lara is that she look after them (which she even agrees to!), it isn't like he wants them to be completely cut off. Just that they integrate on their terms and not those of the rest of the world.

I admit I missed this part.

Na, more like they subverted it given that the first arrivals in the New World were oh... the 1500's, and Kukulkan was worshipped by the original Aztec inhabitants. But yeah, the dude just wants Trinity to leave his people the fuck alone, and if that means invoking an ancient reality-bending ritual, so be it. You'll note that Lara is the one who in her haste actively disregards and shits upon the initial warnings that taking that dagger is going to cause fucking disasters to fall upon the world, and so Amaru is just trying to get the shit from her so he can undo what she has done. So no, he's not the bad guy since he had an actual plan regarding the artifacts instead of "lol snatch shit because Trinity bad".

I meant white people used the cult to control this ancient society because they wanted to steal their artifacts and shit. Trinity was established by Catholic church, or at least was connected to it, and was involved in colonization, so the narrative isn't exactly subtle here.
I agree that the villain is more sympathetic than Lara, and this is why I hate Shadow the most. I don't need a deconstruction about how raiding tombs is actually bad because Lara is a rich white woman, but I understand it's the only kind of narrative we'll be getting at this point...

My problem with Shadows was that marketing lead me to believe this would be a PTSD riddled Killbot Lara grappling with her personal demons as she dismantles Trinity single handedly. Instead you prance around the rainforest village with the natives and have some pretty terrible flashback setpieces with maybe 5 minutes of killbot Lara.

"How dare the man who created Lara say he created Lara???!"

So classic stans hate both Nathan Mccree and Toby Gard but they're also mad they're not working on a new Tomb Raider...
Mccree did fuck up with Kickstarter, but I don't get their hateboner for Toby just because he doesn't want to be on their shitty podcasts. He was always a private dude.

So I've been playing through the Tomb Raider Trilogy and I've been enjoying it so far. Legend and Anniversary were pretty good, I felt like Anniversary kind of played the cheap "throw a bunch of enemies at the player to fake difficulty" card(most notably with the gorillas in Greece) but it wasn't so bad that it made me enjoy it less. I like that it's mostly platforming and puzzles with the combat being pretty simple, wish the series would go back to that instead of trying to be Uncharted. Lara's a total badass too, like holy shit she's so much cooler here than in the reboot. Overall they're just really good games and I wish I'd played them earlier.

How on earth did they fuck up Underworld?? Did all the good devs leave??? What the fuck is this camera????

I was shocked by how garbage Underworld was too. Could only play through it once.

I'll take Underworld's bad camera over Anniversary's grappling sections (seriously, FUCK great pyramid).
Underworld deserved better. It was rushed in production because Anniversary was shoehorned mid-development, so they had to change the story, put Natla in it (there was a different villain originally) and cut loads of content and levels (some were later released as DLCs that are still Xbox exclusives). This is why the story felt so anti-climatic, especially stuff about Avalon and Lara's mother. There were improvements like Lara's acrobatics, advanced platforming and less QTEs, but considering the devs were using a different engine they needed more than a year to complete the game (RIP Kyle). Anniversary suffered from rushed production as well - half of bosses were literally removed and replaced with QTEs. LAU trilogy arguably needs remasters more than classics, at least improving collision.

Anyway, it's a sad day for Camilla's fans, but who cares
