Palin's bullish desire to drill more US oil was a dumb idea long term. Yes, we're sitting on a fuckton of untapped oil. It's best we keep it that way for as long as possible. The day crude becomes too scarce elsewhere to cheaply import (or a viable alternative is actually on the horizon) is when we drill our own. We'll be the future's Middle east/South America so long as we hoard what we've got and some eco-conscious fuck doesn't ruin it. A few new wells isn't a terrible idea, but "drill baby drill" absolutely is.

I'd reckon the "easy" deposits to find have already been found and the harder ones are going to be a bitch to dig. Salt traps are the default means of finding oil and those can be spotted by any retard with ultrasound equipment and basic knowledge of what to look for. Any other deposits are much harder to locate and therefore more expensive, especially when you register a false positive. All of your digging was for nothing. Markets will react and the price will skyrocket once existing deposits aren't as fruitful as they once were.
Compound that with the existence of the petrodollar (yes, there's international efforts trying to kill it but it still stands on tentative grounds to this day) which provides incentive to keep the price artificially high and you can clearly see why we aren't drilling our own shit. We have plenty of easily accessible shit that we could open up at any moment. We choose not to because we expect the long term benefit to be worth it. Every politician, Democrat or Republican, is eager to pull the trigger. We're just waiting on an opportunity where we'll have the upper hand in doing so. Now's not the time. People have been waiting on that time for decades. It truly could be a fool's errand. But it's best not to blow your load before the time comes, just in case.
