I'm sure they would be okay with Hafthór Júlíus Björnsson declaring himself a woman and beating the crap out of biological women.
Respect my noncomforming gendernorms, shitlords!
And (s)he's really hurt people with no guilt. I know people have tried to explain to them that there are biological differences in strength with both genders. They wouldn't listen.

Fuck that bullshit of it being transoggyknees or whatever to exclude trans athletes who grew up male with all the benefits of male hormones and anatomy, who then want to be female and enjoy a huge unfair advantage in sports.

That is some bullshit, East German women's swim team shit.

"It's offensive that CIS get to play trans characters.": Man, whatever happened to best person for the job?

Quote from that article- "Film is a visual medium. Duh, right? You can’t see gay. You can’t see the desire to be a murderer. However, you can see things like a physical disability, or someone’s ethnicity, or whether someone is trans. There is a very specific physicality to all of those things that deserves to be expressed by performers who are actually living with or as those things."

You can see whether someone is trans? Doesn't that kind of negate the whole concept of someone passing as their desired gender identity?

I'm disappointed that real murderers aren't playing the murderers in movies. Did you know that when Alan Rickman fell out of that window in Die Hard he didn't actually die? I'm tired of the phoniness of Hollywood

Yeah, this is the kind of shit we get from that comic:

And I can't say much for the writing quality either, but SJW types eat it up because she's chubby, a woman, and she does stupid shit like debate pronouns with Galactus.

Ugh...

Okay, so, speaking as somebody who's actually read the Squirrel Girl comic, it's... actually not that bad? Pretty cute, really. I think the intended audience is mostly newer readers (who may very well be teenage girls), and if The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl gets some girls into comics, then more power to it. Ryan North, the guy that does Dinosaur Comics, is the writer, actually, and I think he does a pretty good job. The pronoun argument came across as pretty tongue-in-cheek in context. And the art... well, it's kind of grown on me.

I realize I'm kind of in the minority here, but fuck it. It's a decent comic. I don't give a shit if SJWs love it, because really, I barely see anybody talk about it. My guess is that's because they have nothing to complain about, therefore it's not worth their time.

Jesus Christ, that's a creepy drawing.

Oh no, this athlete I put up on a pedestal has betrayed me by revealing she disagrees with me! Better use the internet in the hopes that maybe she'll see this article and beg for forgiveness from me!

So what about trannies playing cis characters? Do you have anything against John Waters' films? (And now I'm pretty sure I made an error there...)

>implying they've ever watched John Waters' films

"It's offensive that CIS get to play trans characters.": Man, whatever happened to best person for the job?

So cis people should only be allowed to play cis roles.

Let's take this to its logical conclusion.

Trannies should only be played by trannies, and trannies should ONLY be allowed to play trannies.

So what about trannies playing cis characters? Do you have anything against John Waters' films? (And now I'm pretty sure I made an error there...)

Can I just explain this real quick? No one thinks that this is offensive because cisgender actors are somehow "desecrating our good name" by portraying trans characters on TV or something (well, someone probably does, but they're stupid, so...), this is more about transgender actors who have a hard enough time getting work as it is without cisgender actors taking roles that one would think they'd be perfect for. This isn't a matter of finding the best person for the job, transgender actors aren't even being considered for these roles, and that's sort of the problem here.

If we only allowed trans people to play trans people, and cis people to play cis people, that would still come out to trans people getting more roles than they're currently getting.

There's a bit more going on than that-- film and tv actors are small insular communities, very very very rarely is there some kind of open casting call for any role. It is very much about a rapport between casting agents, actors and director. Often character are crafted with actors already in mind, especially when the character is incredibly specific-- and right now trans characters usually exist for a reason. You're quite often crafting a character to fit a story, so you're making a trans character to tell a story that usually revolves around that particular characteristic. And if you're putting that much thought into it you're almost always starting knowing who is going to play that character or at the very least you already have a short list.

So it's not ignoring casting trans actors, it's simply starting with who you want to play that role. Which usually comes from a place of a director having drinks with a long time collaborative actor and going "it'd be great to see you play this character".

Now sometimes that works out-- Jessica Lange did that for almost every season of American Horror Story. All her characters were built for her.

Sometimes it's an abject failure like say Gary Oldman in Tiptoes.

Good God she's slow, there was already some loon calling Thomas The Tank Engine was sexist and it helped discourage young girls from being train drivers and engineers about a year ago!
Thomas is also fatphobic; the manager of the trains has no name and is simply called The Fat Controller.

The journalism grad in me weeps at all the rules they have shat on. Using "I" in reviews and using slang? :cryblood:

I think The Mary Sue was one of the many places that promoted the PoS known as "Goldie Blox," an engineering toy "for girls" that broke easily and was insultingly patronising in addition to poorly made. They supported the bad ads that they made, and then promptly turned on the whole thing when they pointed out the main character was a WHITE little girl.

To be fair, the author of the original Thomas the Tank Engine books, William Audry, WAS apparently a classist and imperialist, so there's that.

Stop Saying You Only Care About Quality Over Diversity: There are some good points, but these days diversity to people like this is more about throwing fits when people don't change the race, gender or sexuality of an established character to what they want; get angry when a white person is writing a POC or something that is out of their "genre" like rap, think that POC can't enjoy characters that don't look like them and are so fragile that everything offends them, or focus on gender and skin color over talent. Then scream racism when they don't their way.

I don't mind legacy characters like Ms Marvel and Mr. Terrific who are continuing a tradition when the original retires or dies. I'm sure that there are POC and women who are denied because of that. But, people like this are ruining the concept of diversity and turning it into something that is eye-rolling.
