The disjoint between how he acted in the clinic and another place just seem like a classic troon behaviour to me, to seem good in front of professionals.
In interwar Poland we had at least one case of a female-to-male/ intersex-to-male transition. Zofia Smętek (born 1910), an athlete, was "assigned female at birth", diagnosed as intersex later in life and underwent surgical transition in 1937. Everything we know about this case is mostly from the press and the medical documents were probably destroyed during the war. Smętek lived as Witold, got married to women twice, after WWII he didnt continue his career in sports, but went to uni, got a degree in history and became a tourist guide. Oh, and he had his own kids as his type of intersexuality didnt make him infertile.
We also had Stanislawa Walasiewicz, an afab intersex athlete. Her intersexuality became a known fact after she died in a bank robbery in Ohio and an autopsy was conducted. Walasiewicz had an Y chromosome, no wonder she was a blast on the sports field.
I've been thinking about this, too, and it has me conflicted. I do still think it's healthy to have men be less emotionally constipated but I think we went too far, for both genders.

Higher levels of testosterone and lower levels of prolactin make it harder for men to cry. I don't think your average man needs to be shamed into not crying. (Though perhaps the outliers, more naturally sensitive men, get shamed about crying.)
I think men have different emotional needs than women. They don't feel some emotions as intensely as women, specifically due to testosterone. FtMtF detransitioners report that T blunted their emotions (also made them more ragey).
