‘Mandalorian’ Star Gina Carano Under Fire for Controversial Social Media Posts

Gina Carano

Gina Carano, who plays Cara Dune on both seasons of Disney Plus’ “The Mandalorian,” garnered backlash on social media Wednesday after sharing several controversial posts on her Instagram story.

Carano shared the posts on her story late Tuesday night. One of the posts she shared compared today’s divided political climate to Nazi Germany.

“Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…even by children. Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views,” the post, which was originally made on a different Instagram account, read.

Another photo on Carano’s story featured a person with several cloth masks covering their entire face and head. The caption said “Meanwhile in California.”

Both posts were removed from Carano’s Instagram story Wednesday afternoon. Other posts, including a quote saying “Expecting everyone you encounter to agree with every belief or view you hold is fucking wild” and one saying “Jeff Epstein didn’t kill himself,” remained.

Many people on Twitter began using the hashtag #FireGinaCarano, tagging accounts for Disney, Disney Plus, “Star Wars” and Lucasfilm and requesting that Carano be dropped from “The Mandalorian.”

Carano has courted social media controversy before, previously sharing misinformation about mask wearing and voter fraud. In November 2020, she made light of people including their preferred pronouns on social media by adding “beep/bop/boop” to her Twitter bio, which many fans called out as transphobic. Carano later removed the words after she said she spoke to her “Mandalorian” co-star Pedro Pascal. “He helped me understand why people were putting them in their bios. I didn’t know before but I do now. I won’t be putting them in my bio but good for all you who choose to. I stand against bullying, especially the most vulnerable & [support] freedom to choose,” she wrote at the time.

Representatives for Carano and Disney did not respond to Variety’s request for comment.

Carano dated Henry Cavill years ago, unless they grew to hate each other he could make a name for himself in being the anti Chris Evans and telling people to fuck off and leave her alone. Hell it would be nice for Bill Burr to defend her if he’s not getting cucked by his wife.

Unless I’m missing a tabloid article about him Cavill has always seemed like he’s a bit more redpilled about stuff like Chris Pratt, but he’s seen how they’ve gone after him and will probably stay quiet.
Cavill apparently unfriended her Instagram. What a pussy.

"I'm gonna stop giving Disney a dime over this!"

they did this precisely because you're still gonna watch their shit and whine that you can't do anything, anything at all except continue to watch their shit.
a handful of people will actually follow through for more than a hot week
If people care that much about the shitty show, they should spend money on a VPN and nab the show from the high seas. arrggghhh

I haven't seen any Disney Star Wars shit since ... when was Rogue One?
Did Thor 2 come out before Disney bought marvel? Otherwise, Tron: Legacy. I don't see any appeal in seeing any of those movies, and I don't even really care to re-watch a lot of the old shit my folks showed me when I was a kid. I don't so much care if people boycott or not, but it's just really funny when people insist they will and then are apparently so crippled by missing out on the hot disney properties that they go back on their word and cave.

I'm sure some small portion will, but these are the same people who got mad at Nike and Keurig ads/tweets and destroyed products that they had already bought to "stick it" to the companies. Then they went out and bought from those same companies to replace the shit they broke, after they found they didn't actually want to shop from other brands because it was too scary.

Meanwhile they gived Pedro Pascal a free pass, no need to guess why.

Carano previously drew criticism for mocking pronouns, putting "boop/bop/beep" in her Twitter bio.

"Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future," said a Lucasfilm spokesperson in a statement. "Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable."
Carano also mocked wearing masks amid the pandemic, which received over 40,000 'likes' on Twitter.

In addition to Lucasfilm firing her, Carano was also dropped as a client by her agency, UTA, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"They have been looking for a reason to fire her for two months, and today was the final straw," said one source with knowledge of the situation.
According to sources, Lucasfilm planned to unveil Carano as the star of her own Disney+ series during a December investor's day presentation but scrapped those plans following her November tweets. Multiple Mandalorian spinoffs are in the works from executive producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, including Rangers of the New Republic, which could have potentially starred Carano. -The Hollywood Reporter.
The hypocrisy of firing Carano while keeping Pascal for the same thing has not gone unnoticed:

Comparisons to Nazi Germany are okay with Lucasfilm so long as they’re used to attack the right @ginacarano wasn’t fired for that post — it was a purely tribal culling and they’d clearly been looking for a way to get rid of her for a long time pic.twitter.com/H6jvsxcH3F

Texan Gina Carano broke barriers in the Star Wars universe: not a princess, not a victim, not some emotionally tortured Jedi. She played a woman who kicked ass & who girls looked up to. She was instrumental in making Star Wars fun again. Of course Disney canceled her.

very surreal to watch in real time as the twitter hive mind updates its firmware from 'present-day america is basically nazi germany' to 'comparing present-day america to nazi germany is an abhorrent, unprecedented, fireable offense'

This makes sense in that it's another cudgel against Favreau salvaging Star Wars. The woke queen yass' into the Twitter crowd while also kneecapping the man who can take her out.

At the same time I dunno how you can let her go for this but still hire Rosario Dawson to be Tano with the intent of giving her, her own show when she's involved in a court case because of supposed physical abuse against a trans person.
Troons physically abuse themselves and also deserve more abuse.

Holy shit so Favreau was innocent on this. I knew the woke queen was most likely involved, but i wasn't sure if Favreau was. Granted make since he wanted to continue Cera story from What i am hearing.

This just seems like Disney / LucasFilm / Kathleen Kennedy being catty for this actress daring to have an opinion politically outside the group think.

Ah, Mean Girls. I love that movie. It's kinda scary on how relevant that movie applies to today society. Everyone has to have their cliques, each with their own rules and bylaws. What a mad world.

i'd say get a life and stop obsessing over pop culture and franchises in general but people get very defensive when i say that because they have typically spent their whole lives obsessing over the shit.

the idea is that hopefully after many failed attempts at finding some new franchise to obsess over they will realize how pathetic obsessing over pop culture and corporate franchises actually is.

My "plan" is to kind of produce something that is popular, complex with lore and characters and that can get expanded with something akin to the expanded universe (the one that Disney decided isnt canon, except when they realize their original content sucks ass). My opinion is that its time to let go of these sinking ships and go ahead and produce something of your own, build it over time and make it "your" next Star Wars.

I've always done stuff like this because I grew up poor. I wish more people would just come up with stories and characters for themselves as a form of entertainment. It doesn't have to be the most original or even the most creative just something *you* enjoy.

If more people actually did this instead of just writing fanfiction maybe we'd have some actual "new" things to enjoy.
