Does the original Space Jam hold up?

The movie should actually star Michael B. Jordan just so it can be about him being confused with Michael Jordan.

Seriously, why did they think this shit was a good idea? Didn't the original flop as well? There's hardly a demand for it and the whole reason the first even existed was because of some moderately popular shoe commercials.
I think she may have, but also want to bet the movie has a joke about him being Metooed
I think they'll just cut him out entirely and not say a thing...

I'm a bit of a Looney Tunes dork, and Space Jam was never one of my favorites to begin with.

However, the original did have this going for it: 1) The basketball players like Barkley and Mugsy actually being kind of funny, 2) The context of spawning from a popular shoe commercial, so it didn't feel too out of place (even if it was viewed as commercialism run rampant) and 3) One kickass album

You know what a sequel in 2021 isn't going to have? Those things.

We live in a timeline where "The Emoji Movie" exists. What makes you think remaking a movie from the 90's that wasn't good somehow registers as being a "bad idea" for an industry that is so deeply creatively bankrupt? They already have stripped mined the 80's nostalgia vein down to the Earth's core, now they'll continue with the 90's, it really doesn't matter if the original content was good or bad, so long as there are enough people with rose-tinted-glassed-memories for whatever was produced in that decade then Hollywood will exploit it for a quick buck because banking on any preexisting property with name recognition is easier that producing a brand new movie. Hollywood as a whole needs to have a massive crash for it to go from "woke" to "wake up" and realize the shit they have been producing for the past decade does not sell. Like what the Hell are they going to do once they strip mine the 90's nostalgia? The remakes of 80's properties starter in the 2000s, they literally will have to resort to remakes of remakes. By then he degradation and stagnation of the entire industry will be complete.

As for Pepe LePew: The character's whole shtick was being a sex pest, there is a snowball's chance in Hell we'll ever see him again. It'll be like the Animaniacs reboot, whatever hint of adult or politically incorrect humor is going to be jettisoned into the sun.

Critics didn't particularly care for it, but it grossed over $200 million so financially it was a huge success.

All I know is my former 4th grade class tard is probably stoked about this. He was still talking about Space Jam well into 1998 at least.

Well its a partially 2D film, so it may not do well this time around.

I just hope the "leaks" about them fighting the Wicked Witch of the West, the Mask and nu-Pennywise aren't true. At the very least their opponents should also be animated.

while simultaneously being a movie that may very well have started the furry movement with Lola Bunny.
Eh, maybe for 90's kids who somehow missed having their big furry awakening with Robin Hood.

That doesn't make any sense. I mean, neither did the first Space Jam, but that just really makes no sense.

The Mask is toon-enough to maybe pass (for what purpose, I don't know), but the others aren't. I wouldn't put it past Warner Bros. to do this in another attempt for a cinematic universe of... something, but this movie has been delayed so much that whatever ideas they may have had in mind will most likely be completely out-dated.

What the fuck does any of that shit have to do with basketball?
It's being used to promote WB ips, once this movie is out I fully expect shit like a Mask reboot or real sequel if they get Jim Carrey back, don't expect it just to be the Mask as well, if it does well fully expect a full line of tv shows/movie rebots/remakes/sequels of other stuff featured.
Also expecting a line about how HBO Max having all this stuff and all, or some other way they will market HBO Max within the movie.

It's already a shitshow with producers and directors whining about it, that'll just twist the knife in further.

I never realized how many people hated Space Jam. I always looked at it as a case study for why more Looney Tunes characters should have been in Jordan commercials, while not actually talking about Jordan sneakers.

Back when Space Jam came out our music class had to sing the songs from it for assemble because that's what all the ghetto kids wanted.

Still remember the main theme and I believe I can fly because of it.

Always hated that movie.

Seal’s “Fly Like An Eagle” and Technotronic’s “Pump Up The Jam” are the only reason why the soundtrack was as great as it is. It’s like “The Bodyguard” of movie soundtracks.

The first Space Jam was ass. It's not a good movie. The funniest parts of the movie involved the basketball players, and not the Looney Tunes. Fail.

90s nostalgia needs to DIAF.

Well it’s going to be moved straight to streaming so on Day 1, I’m not even sure if people would even torrent it.

That would require Hollywood to have more creative thought, while not fully realizing that product placement in the 90’s wasn’t as astroturfed as it is I’m present day. Plus with LeBron James and Co. behind it, the soundtrack will probably be LeBron’s personal Spotify or Apple Music playlist.

I thought this was supposed to be a Space Jam sequel, not a Suicide Squad for franchises that have nothing to do with the Monstars.

At least it won’t be a Batman vs. Superman movie with Ben Affleck brooding and Jesse Eisenberg trying too hard to make Lex Luther look like a nerd after playing as Mark Zuckerberg. Though, I’d laugh out loud if LeBron asked the producers to randomly “surprise” the audience by having Batman and Superman play basketball with NBA stars and the Looney Tunes.
