I thought i'd make a topic on that to discuss censorship in Final Fantasy games. Mainly FF1-FF6.

First of all. FF4 on DS kind of did fix lots of the early mistake that was in the hand of "Nintendo of America" at the time. For example, instead of Espers in FF6.. which is wrong. They are in FF4 called Eidolons (though i think FF9 started that first). Milon is easier to remember i will admit, though that got fixed too. Basically, since FF games deals with myths and stuff, and Nintendo having "No religion in my game policies" that means you cant have that. But they also made the series so confusing because of this. Like if they just called "Espers" to "Eidolon" it would be so easy to get the whole concept more. Since the translation makes so much more sense.

But i am curious to your views?

The SNES translation of FF4 was so bad that Squaresoft had to fire the translator and hire a translator by the name of Ted Woolsey. Other than that, I don't have much of an opinion, but Terra does look more like an esper than an eidolon.

Search up Esper. See what you find. All i found was "someone who controls Telepathy and supernatural abilities" Problem is.. thats not what an Eidolon is. Its something that you cant see that happens to be a beast. Thats basically what the summons in FF games are called "in Japan its probably a non problem" but because of how hard this was to get done right in the west. It wouldnt surprise me when people go ?? about the whole Eidolon thing

Edit: Though i will agree. FF4, good graphics but horrible translation. While i prefer FF4 original game, i cant say same way about the translation. Which was basically perfected in the DS version

I’m starting to think OP is a plant or something. Purposely trying to earn neg ratings in some weird misguided attempt to get attention.

Dick (can I call you Dick?) why only 8/16-bit era games? And why specifically Final Fantasy? There’s plenty of examples of censoring in video games. Not just over-rated JRPGs

tbh Esper bugged me even when that was new because Esper is a thing and they clearly aren't it any more than they're orcs or dryads or goombas or Villanos

Someone bait OP into complaining about censorship in Earthbound, hahahahahahahahahahahahaha

I know Esper means someone who uses ESP but if you think about how the Espers were created in 6 then the term kinda makes sense.

BTW most of the JP versions dont even use these terms. They were all made up by localization teams.

The fact that Tifa's tig-ol-bitties got shrunken in the remake is in itself a form of censorship, and i do not approve of it one bit. 💔😢

Well.. if you saw new updates. They were planning on it. But it wasnt. The shrunken part is just old images basically. If you compare the model of the remake one "new pic with old artwork from 1997" its basically same size, boobs burst out like they did with old one.

But i bet Square got that feedback on it. Trying to play it safe is my bet to sorta please everyone. Cant blame them.

Old picture of her

Current one

Basically.. i dont see anything to complain about. But hey thats me.

Goddess comparison (FF6).gif

Unforgivable, those pixelated boobs and sniz were all the porn I had back then

They were originally humans until the Warring Triad needed soldiers and turned them into mini-Akiras.

I was wondering if the steam version of Final Fantasy VIII is censored?

Cause the remasters on console seems to be.

They also covered up Rinoa's pixelated, boxy PS1 tits for some reason in the remaster, her cleavage wasn't even that extreme either.

And yes, Chrono Cross is censored too (dialogue is the only difference I know of). If they ever remake Chrono Trigger they'll put Ayla and Marle in burqas. Fuck Square-Enix.

Honestly a lot of this is a big Nothing-Burger.

Some of what you said is straight up wrong--the Espers weren't called Eidolons in Japanese FF6, they were called Genjuu, or Phantom Beasts. And when I first played FF6 as a kid/teen, "Esper" was just a fantasy made up term that could mean anything--I didn't learn its real meaning until way later.

And besides, would you really want them to keep the Japanese term? With that, either Terra's mom fucked a Juu, or she fucked a Beast. I'd rather she fuck a Telepath.

And as for "keeping the series consistent"--the series' games are (or used to be) not plot-related in any way outside of recycled terminology, and even that wasn't always consistent even in Japan. So who cares if one game calls them Summons and another calls them Eidolons?

Regarding FF4's translation... to be honest I don't see how its all that bad. I recall playing the PSP translation later, which is supposed to be way more accurate... and being disappointed that the differences amounted to basically cleaning up the text to read more naturally and less like 16-bit video game text. All the story, emotional moments, plot beats etc. come across just fine. Two kids still get stoned and the bard is still spoony (even if only the NA version calls him that).

As for the covering up of boobies in the older games.... who the fuck cares? This was the 1990s, go rent some anime OVAs from the time if you need animated boobs that badly. Honestly as a kid growing up when these games were new to our shores, I never noticed the censorship and did not care.

........

And, not to be passive aggressive at the farms here, but I have wondered if this whole thing is a bit of a catch-22, because for as much as we bitch about censorship we also often bitch about coomerbait or inserting sexual content into mediums meant for kids (which video games certainly were in the 1990s).

Granted, my own catch-22 is like I said, even when games blatantly allowed Nudity (often on Sega platforms)... I usually didn't even notice or didn't care, because this was the days of low resolution CRTs, I was too young to be aware of that stuff, and most of the time when you're playing a video game you have other priorities, like "not dying and having to re-fight the last three bosses."

And yes, Chrono Cross is censored too (dialogue is the only difference I know of). If they ever remake Chrono Trigger they'll put Ayla and Marle in burqas. Fuck Square-Enix.
Speaking of Marle... last year I found out her name was pronounced "Mar-ul." That weirded me out, as I thought it was pronounced "Marley." In part because I used to know a girl named Marley who looked a lot like the CT one.

I still go with my preferred pronunciation.
