Yeah, if he starts making too much attention: alumni donors could begin complaining. Not enough to get him fired, certainly. But, it would probably begin to strain the relationship with him and the administration.

His relationship with the administration has always been strained. He barely squeaked through tenure and his superiors have told him to knock off the social media trolling, which of course he didn't.
However, this doesn't matter because Rhys was never "going places" in academia to begin with. He won't get fired and won't get promoted.

You can get fired if you have tenure. It’s much harder than if you don’t but even here in Europe when you have the equivalent you can fire people.

You can, but the administration has much more of an interest in preserving the invulnerability of tenure than in getting rid of one embarrassing but mostly harmless babysitter of freshmen. In a political climate that's hostile to academia and tenure in general, no one's going to want to set a precedent that might chip away at these protections.
