Muslims tend towards extremes because of the various schools of Fiqh.

Some schools are flexible and liberal like the Hanafi school that go along the lines of "Follow the holy books based on the common good" while others are like "Do as it literally says regardless of what is best" or "blindly follow the consensus of the community".

I'd say this is why Liberal Muslims are insanely liberal and conservative Muslims are insanely violent.

The Hanafi school kinda got messed up because people think the common good means destroying America but what can you do.

AFAIK it is still going on. The UK media has apparently decided not to report on it, except in rare cases. Plus the schools are currently closed for some sort of break. I think the schools in Manchester are supposed to re-open from Summer break sometime this month. My guess is the protests will start again and the UK gov't. will cave, but also do everything in their power to pretend they haven't.

To be fair to them the top comment on the Reddit thread does point out that it's a bad idea for foreign women to visit Pakistan alone. The rest of the thread is a load of whining about white people though. What baffles me is that they say inner cities in the USA are as dangerous as much of Pakistan (true in many cases - I'd sooner take my chances in rural Pakistan than downtown Baltimore), but then think that's because of white people. I'm not going to bring out the /pol/ memes but overlaying the race and crime maps of inner cities tells the story, though that's because black people live in the gang territory areas rather than because they're innately evil. Chicago gangs were pretty much all white until the 1960s.

A very insightful comment. Certainly there are some things in Pakistan that are less than ideal, but these can generally be credited to the population there coming from the same base as that of notorious rape culture India.

Anywhere with Pakistan's level of extreme corruption and lack of rule of law and infrastructure is going to be like that. Mexico isn't that different, though much more dangerous thanks to the drug war. They've certainly got plenty of beheading videos.

Chicken-Egg-Problem. Maybe anywhere with a population like Pakistan's will descent into extreme levels of corruption and lack of rule of law and infrastructure, could go both ways.
