a lot of discussion around the game seems to focus on the gameplay being rudimentary, but I think there's more to it than first appears. This trailer seems to show when you 'die' you are transported to a warzone and have to fight your way back. That's a really good idea because it builds on how most people play stealth games. You generally spend a run really trying to be patient and stealthy but then if you fail you try to rush things. Having to fight your way out of a fail state lets you get the frustration and anger out before you try again.

Other gameplay bits have hinted that when absorbed by the BTs you leave behind a crater. What that means is the world map can be fundamentally altered. This brings up an interesting idea where you reach a part of the world map you can't traverse, you could intentionally kill yourself, fight back from hell, and find that part of the map fundamentally altered. Combat doesn't seem special but the gunplay in MGSV was fun enough, but what really looks enticing is traversal. Having a lot of gear that you can use to get around gorges and hills and the like seems super fun. The best part of Breath of The Wild was just exploring the vast map, and this looks like it'll give the same level of freedom but with more meat to it. It might seem simple now but this looks less like a series of scenarios to run through and more like a series of systems that interact with one another you can manipulate.

Hell, I'd enjoy it if it was just a hiking simulator alone. The environments look gorgeous and I hope it doesn't pull a BoTW and get downgraded upon release

And I thought this year was going to be stale past March, well, definitely to get this. Looks good. Wasn't clear, but the ladder extension and rappel doesn't look like it's context sensitive, but an item that can be used anywhere, so quite possibly if you see it, you can get to it. Combine this with confirmed terrain altering craters when dying, and we have something interesting.

Noticed that when Norman got hit, one of the cases dropped, which was then used in melee, so does this mean that taking damage could end up with you losing gear if you are not careful. Also possibly opens up to using other equipment in fights. MGS5 allowed the disarming of opponents and using gear against them, so I would find it odd if you couldn't pick up one of those staffs and use it.

From what I can tell, it's PS4 only, so it would be designed for that console only. Then again, we did get the downgrade that was Days Gone, though this has taken its time in development compared to BoTW and DG.

some more thoughts from rewatching the trailer

-the opening of the trailer and the end both seem to be Mads' character Cliff speaking to a Bridge baby. However, the first scene Mads has blood on his face. It seems likely Mads will go rogue to protect this bridge baby or his research, and that may be what fractured america to begin with.
-Sam (reedus) appears to be wearing handcuffs at 1:23, though one is undone. Given his love of John Carpenter, I'm willing to bet Sam was a convict being given a pardon in exchange for reconnecting america. No implication of his crimes is shown but I think it's likely he was involved in the fracturing the america with Mads.
-at 0:44 there's a shot of a photo of Sam, Lindsay Wagner's character, and a pregnant woman. there's little else to go on, but notably PT featured a report of a father murdering his family, including his pregnant wife. This may be the crime Sam committed to get locked up. A lot of people interpret the hades line and the bridges to be a teleportation network that has punctuated the afterlife, and humans can't pass on anymore. if this is true, Sam may have killed his family before the experiment could be completed so they'd pass on, but wasn't able to kill himself. It's also possible the child isn't Sam's but a proto bridge baby, and Lindsay Wagner was involved in the project.
-Sam calls the president by her first name, implying the two of them were close at one point. She may have been part of BRIDGES but not the experiment
-The dialog in the trailer gives the impression Sam is going between cities in america to reconnect it Judge Dredd style, but there's some evidence the game doesn't take place on earth at all. For one, black soil is prominent in the environments, but black soil isn't in america as far as I can tell, not in these quantities. The imagery here looks more like the irish or scottish countryside. Vehicles also appear light and bright, like the kind you often see in mockups of space colonies. The conversation with bridget implies america is in shambles, on the verge of a mad max style resource war, but the untapped resources of an alien world would be a huge boon to america. This is also the plot of Mobile Suit Gundam, a work Kojima is a massive fan of. Homo Demens would also have a more obvious motivation to keep america seperated if they believe the earth government would simply repeat the rape of earth on the new world.
-at 1:42 you can see Sam starring at his dog tags floating above his hand. a later shot shows sam with a bridge baby suspended in the air. If I had to guess, this sequence takes place on a moon base that'll act as a mother base for the game, tying into the final line in the trailer.
-The Homo Demens are seperatists who intend to maintain their own independence and seem able to summon BTs to kill off entire towns. This shows that the BTs can be manipulated and create craters in events called 'Void Outs". This is followed by the title card "Those who resist the future". This seems to go against my earlier theory, but the title cards may in fact be referring to Sam, resisting the independence of new america. Demens seem to track Sam by his equipment. an energy pulse hits sam and then a graphic of his gear is shown where he was initially hit, which looks extremely similar to the 'last seen' graphic in a lot of stealth games. This introduces an interesting mechanic where you could avoid the Demens by completely forgoing gear.
-Sam says he 'can sense BTs but not see them' and it's revealed the fetus they carry are bridge babies. Sam says that by using them they 'connect to the other side'. Bridge babies may be from Hades and thus are able to see things leaking into the real world from there. THis is followed by 'Those connected to the past" with Sam being pulled by BTs into the other realm with 'Those Bound to Hades". Sam is then in the WW1 like area with the title card "Those who cannot break the connection" and "Those who struggle to stay connected". followed by shots of Sam and Mads character, Cliff.
-Cliff has a vanguard of skull troopers with him, something that seems unique to him and is present in nearly all of his appearences.
-Cliff has a large glowing cut on his stomach in this scene. Sam had a similar cut in the debut trailer and it was assumed he had something removed, but I now think they each had something inserted. Later in the trailer we see a shot identical to the stomach baby, but with a decrepit doll instead. I think Cliff had some sort of machine inserted into him that allows him to freely traverse Hades, while Sam had Bridge Baby genes. Cliff's device may be breaking down and he wants to steal whatever is powering Sam to maintain his life in hades. This would also explain why only Sam seems able to reform america.
-one shot has Deadman and Die-hardman talking to Sam together, which implies Nounman is a naming scheme unique to one of the factions

I swear, Kojima is like Bill the Taxi Driver from the goddamn Marid Audran novels by George Alec Effinger. He's had one of his lungs removed and replaced with a system that drips hallucinogens into his bloodstream, nonstop.

He's amazingly creative but he's also batfuck nuts.

One of the things Konami did was make sure pretty much every last scrap from PT and Silent Hills was locked up forever, the attitude by Konami made Guiermo Del Toro vow to never be involved directly in video games again, and he's only loaning his likeness to DeadMan in this game because of how well Toro, Ito, Kojima and Reedus all got on despite the multiple layers of language barriers. For many of them video games is an entirely new turf and method of storytelling, and having an unleashed master like this at the helm drew most of them back in.

I doubt they're going to let them get away with using such a storyline. I think it's more likely his family was killed in the void out/shattering of America.

-Sam calls the president by her first name, implying the two of them were close at one point. She may have been part of BRIDGES but not the experiment

Could be she signed off on things. Or is deeply involved in the project. Could even be all her own damn fault and she's now stuck as President of fuck all.

The black colouring on the ground has been a staple of these trailers so far. Suggesting and hinting more at something to do with Oil and fighting for Oil (or other resources). These become far more prominent with the BT's effectively dragging you into puddles of it. Mentions of both Hades and "The Other Side" means the goop could be a representation of of the various rivers. The realm of Hades itself is chock full of rivers, islands, islets etc. If the teleportation system, whatever it is, lets humanity skip across the realm of the dead, and thus fuck everything up... then the BT's could be those pissed off at humanity for spitting in the natural order, and allowing for floods of souls through their realm.

On top of that, there's no telling what could have happened to Hades if all the paupers and incorrectly buried could suddenly cross the River Styx without paying Charon.... I mean, if I were the well heeled of the dead living in Hades I and the lord of the realm would probably be pretty damn pissed at the situation....

The scars on the stomachs are from the Umbilical chords letting them connect to the bridge babies as seen in previous trailers.

What's interesting is how said chords are used. Previously Cliff could be seen connected to all four of the skull troopers in the other trailer, who've since had an equipment upgrade (they were more Vietnam era, carrying M14's previously and seem to be carrying SOPMOD M4's and NVG's this time.) which rather hints at how strong his connection to The Other Side has become.

See the second(?) teaser for DS. Deadman (Del Toro) is also wearing one. If I were to guess, the cuff allows Sam to pull people into Hades and pull them out, and it seems Deadman got separated from him somewhere during the process.

Don't think Konami would allow him to include P.T. continuations.
-Sam calls the president by her first name, implying the two of them were close at one point. She may have been part of BRIDGES but not the experiment
Not exactly, he may just have disdain for the government and shows this by not calling her as such
-The dialog in the trailer gives the impression Sam is going between cities in america to reconnect it Judge Dredd style, but there's some evidence the game doesn't take place on earth at all.
I don't think this is the case, but rather think that America is, apart from its enclosures, sapped of resources and utterly destroyed by the "time rain", which seems to affect everything it touches.

Very likely. Pay attention to Die Hardman in the trailer, the one with the black mask. The black mask has "LUDENS" on the forehead, and is very similar to the one in Kojima Production's "company trailer" seen on their youtube.

Going in cautiously optimistic.

Seeing more gameplay finally was nice and has my interest. Looks like more MGSV which is fine with me, but I do hope Kojima eases it with the single take cutscenes. Those work best in small doses, not for your entire game.

At least Shinkawa's designs are top tier like usual.

SSS gameplay....
“Featuring Dante from the DMC series”

It's like Jekyll & Hide on the NES!

why is no-one talking about that shit at the end?

"I'll show you the real thing soon... I promise. The whole-wide world will be yours to explore. You'll be able to go where-ever you want... even the moon."

WHY IS NO-ONE TALKING ABOUT WHAT THIS NIGGA' DONE SAID??????

Mikkelsen is taking to a bag baby from the perspective of the bag baby. If the previous poster is right and it's about connectivity, and it seems to be given that Kojima said as much, and the babies are used to form a connection to the "internet monsters" then the baby might be something in the vein of the next generation that understands and can natively navigate the internet unlike old man Kojima. Something like that.

edit for not actually serious predictions: Mikkelsen is a stand in for Zuckerberg, the creator of this new generation, black oil is actually vitriol and hate seeping into the real world from the internet.

he has surpassed Peter Molyneux levels of bullshit here. has he really invented a new gameplay paradigm? or is he jealous FROM minted a genre of imitators? man I really want to believe, but every time Kojima tweets it's something like this.

trailer is ok, doesn't make me not want to play it. homo demons is pretty great though lol

Starting with MGS 2 I always remember Kojima saying it was his last Metal Gear and he was moving on but was always pulled back for the next game. Death Stranding looks like he took every idea he had for a non Metal Gear game and said "fuck it put it all in." I'm just tired of crouching in tall grass with a bow and arrow in every game. I'll take something weird.

*microphone crackle* watch out Sam. that's an enemy homo demon. a single burst from its machine gun could tear a man in half. don't try to take down a homo demon from the front. you won't win in a head to head shootout. try to get behind it, and take it down with missiles.
