I don't think they were ever afraid, I think they just didn't give a shit. They would go on to take potshots at "games journalism" throughout the peak of it and since, and considering they'd had little minor controversies here and there and never lost any standing, I doubt either of the guys were afraid of Zoe for any reason. I think a lot of people just didn't know what was going on and stayed hands off to avoid affiliating with either group of spergs.

Too many powerful friends in the industry who bet EVERYTHING on white knighting her, to the point that admitting that she was a horrible piece of garbage and that the gamers were right in Gamergate, basically would destroy her powerful friends, their standing, and power base if they owned up to basically napalming all known bridges with the consumer base.

To make a comparison: the current Russiagate debacle. If the mainstream media gave a fuck about owning up to that lie filled farce, they'd have to blackball 90% of the media and shut down nearly every major outlet if they admitted lying to the public like they did. Or if, during the Iraq War, the entire news media basically went out of business after it was irrefutably proven that Saddam didn't have weapons of mass destruction and the invasion of Iraq was based on lies the media spread willingly to curry favor with the White House.

They hired Ben Kuchera out of his gig at Ars Technica to create/run their "attempt at fixing games journalism" - The Penny Arcade Report. I think they realised how much of a soyboy lunatic Cuckchera is only after they'd signed him on. At the end of the contract, they memory-holed the project and Kuchera went on to become one of Chelsea's paypigs while also writing articles about wizards harassing her.

Given the Dickwolves stuff, Kuchera being former staff and a "media-empire" that's prime for metoo'ing, I imagine the Penny Arcade boys were told explicitly to not touch Chelsea with a ten-foot stripper pole.

IIRC in her book she says she thinks it was Erons, though I can't remember if she was sure. Which indicates she was running quite a train around that time.
