Roy Thomas, who co-created Carol Danvers alongside Gene Colan, recently expressed his dislike for the way the Skrulls are depicted in Marvel Studios recent Captain Marvel film.

Thomas worked with Stan Lee in the Silver Age of comics and came up with the idea of the Kree/Skrull War during his run on The Avengers which began in The Avengers #35. He recently discussed seeing Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel with Bleeding Cool.

He specifically did not like the way the Skrulls were depicted in the second half of the film.

Actually, the one thing I really hated in the film was turning the Skrulls into a peace-loving race, with the Kree as the heavies. As far as I’m concerned as the principal conceptualizer of the Kree/Skrull War (and I suspect Stan Lee and Jack Kirby would’ve agreed with me), the Skrulls and the Kree are each as bad as each other, as they say. Having the Skrulls all mushy and family-friendly at the end left a bad taste in my mouth… but I loved ’em for most of the movie, when they were doing shape-shifting stuff that looked (and as far as I’m concerned, were) downright evil.

He did express that he liked Yon-Rogg’s portrayal and was a little disappointed they didn’t use his Intelligence Supreme moniker.

“Still, Yon-Rogg turned out to be appropriately vile, and that’s all well and good. I’m sorry the movie folks didn’t use my improved Kree/Skrull War term for the Kree’s Supreme Intelligence–i.e., Intelligence Supreme–but that’s simply because “Supreme Intelligence” has always just sound to me like an IQ score, not the name of an intergalactic AI entity.”

Thomas essentially expressed some elements of the movie that we were all thinking about when we saw how Marvel Studios ended up portraying the Skurlls by the end of the film. In my own review, I talked about the departure from the original story arc of the alien race the film took.

There seems to be a sentiment shared throughout the community of critical reviewers of the film Captain Marvel. It was a mixed bag. Some were praising the performances of Brie Larson, or Sam Jackson. Others were left scratching their heads about how to feel about it. I think it was a consensus regarding the film from Grace Randolph to Marc Bernardin. It wasn’t a great movie, but as Roy Thomas said of it:
“…it was good enough.”

He talked about some points a number of other reviewers hit upon in their writings. It was almost verbatim for some of their issues with the film:

“The reviews are, I think, basically right: It’s not one of the better Marvel movies, not as good an origin as the recent Black Panther (or, dare I say it, the Warner/DC Wonder Woman movie), but it’s entertaining, especially as a setup of things to come–and very soon, at that–in Avengers: Endgame. Brie Larson was fine, although she wasn’t given all that much emotional stuff to do… seeing her and a younger Samuel Jackson interacting was a worthwhile experiment… and there were lots of nice touches along the way. Along with the usual fantastic CGI action sequences.”

A Good Enough Film, but Strong Enough?

This was posited to be the first female-led solo film for Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. And a big feminist film for Marvel. Brie Larson has been outspoken regarding her views, and has caused quite a stir amongst the comic book community. There’s been some speculation about how she’ll work with James Gunn.

And then Kevin Feige wants Larson’s character to be the lead for the MCU going forward. This may get some flak from fans and movie-goers. If we’re talking from her performance in Captain Marvel, I question whether her character can carry the cinematic universe.

I’m of the opinion that it’s a bad move. She may need a Winter Soldier-type sequel to solidify her character in the hearts of viewers. Like Chris Evans for Captain America or Chris Hemsworth ala Ragnarok. But that would take some great writing and dedicated directors to make it happen. Both of which didn’t happen in Captain Marvel, at least not enough, in my opinion.

And then Feige went and said Phase Whatever The Fuck We're On Now was going to start adding more of (((them))) to the movies and completely killed their buzz.

We are happy that Endgame will at least not be ruined completely. Just not happy the MCU is gonna end up like Star Wars eventually. And that's unless they do the X-Men right.

Yeah portraying the Skrulls as good guys is baffling and pretty much guaranteed to be retconned should the MCU continue after Endgame, especially now with the Fox acquisition being made official (Fantastic Four vs Super Skrull for example). I get that they wanted a twist that comic fans wouldn't see coming (because it was the only thing the movie had going for it) but one that completely goes against everything done in the comics seems like an incredibly shortsighted idea, especially from a company that's had a roadmap planned out for a decade now.

Put another way Skrulls are popular enough even most non-capeshit fans are at least aware of them whereas no one gives a shit about the Kree. For instance, Super Skrull being popular enough to be included in the Marvel vs Capcom games.
 
You know, people have said they are jumping ship after Endgame but why do I get the feeling a majority of people with jump the MCU ship once and if they get around with the X-Men reboot?

Because that’s all people are rapid crazy about regarding MCU. Once and if it arrives, people would be less thrilled with the poetential future ones.

Because the X-Men / Fantastic Four are the only characters most fans and normies would be looking forward to seeing portrayed. Aside from maaaaybe She-Hulk, all the other characters left for Marvel to portray in the MCU are D-List nobodies or the type that were created just to appeal to Tumblr (Fat Squirrel Girl, Muslim Miss Marvel, Miles portrayed badly ....)

If they made Guardians characters that people give a shit about, I'm inclined to believe they can make any no-name work.

The main problem they'll have with X-Men/Fantastic Four films is how much bad faith has been built up already. People aren't gonna want to watch another terrible version of the FF because the last two were utter trash (the first was mediocre but passable), not because they don't expect the MCU to do it competently. Conversely though, the MCU have proven they can turn this kind of negative perception around before, with Spider-Man: Homecoming. Everyone thought it was never gonna work because it was another reboot and the Garfield series had left a bad taste in people's mouths (I liked the casting but writing left much to be desired.), but when Homecoming came out, a lot of people felt that MCU had pulled it off. Admittedly, FF is in much more dire straits than Spider-man was, but still, I doubt we're going to see anything outright bad.
 
Honestly, I think the best thing possible would be for the MCU to take a lengthy break after Endgame. How about a full year-long break at the very least?

Yeah, we all know that isn't going to happen. While I am looking forward to Spider-Man: Far From Home, I honestly believe that Endgame should be the last film from the MCU this year. It's essentially the grand finale to the past 11 years worth of films, and so it should feel as such.

It's like, "Ok, we've seen the finale ... Oh, look! More stuff to watch in two months!" Consume, consume, consume!

I've said this multiple times, and I'll say it again: Don't let Endgame suck. I want Endgame to be a satisfying ... END. Once I see it, I honestly believe I think I'll have my fill from the MCU altogether. I'll probably check out the new phases and give them a proper chance, but my hype will be practically nonexistent compared to the "Infinity Saga." Of course, I could be proven wrong, but we'll see. I'm basically approaching the MCU post-Endgame with zero expectations. If it sucks, oh well. It'll be easy to move on since I will already have my complete saga of films by that point.
 
They can turn the MCU into full-blown progressive agitprop after Endgame for all I care, I'll be sad and jaded but at least I get my closure for the majority of the good characters.
 
So my significant other and I have free movie passes from the rewards system we signed up for, and he wants to use them for Captain Marvel. He was like, "You've dragged me to EVERY Marvel movie, and you don't want to see this one when it's so close to the end? What the fuck? I'm invested now, and we're going on Friday night."

I woke up yesterday morning with the flu, and I feel like hell. I think my body has officially rejected this movie.

And next time someone says this movie made money because of the character, show them this post to shut them up.

That's a telltale sign it's because these movies are connected and the fact it was just before Endgame. If this movie say came out 2 years ago, it would have probably made only 60% of the money that it made now, due to the good will the MCU has had.

And I am hearing a lot of weirdo shills (they all talk like they are emotionless autists rather than regular people) who keep claiming "everyone loved the movie", though I haven't seen many say they actually loved it. And the ones who do, have rather bad opinions (I saw one claim it was better than both of first two Captain America movies, no joke). Basically the shills are acting really weird, more so than usual.

P.S. this may be false, but I saw a picture of supposed Endgame concept art of Captain Marvel being choked out by Thanos. Fingers crossed.
