Speaking of the '90s stuff, I still don't understand why they bothered to set it during that period. I figured maybe they'd tie it into some real world event from then but, nope, they didn't. They don't even really bother to create a unique style for the movie that anchors it in the '90s; there's also only a handful of jokes and pop culture references that require it being in the '90s.

They needed to set it before the first Iron Man film takes place but there's really nothing in the movie that required it to be in 1995 rather than 2005. The only thing that comes to mind is that all the flashbacks to her pre-Kree life needed to take place in the '70s and '80s to sell the whole "lol ur just a dumb lil girl" crap.
The short answer is that Hollywood strip-mined 80s nostalgia for all its worth (though I'm still curious how Wonder Woman 1984 will turn out despite that.)

I'm at a loss as to what real world event could tie into the film. There was the Gulf War, Oklahoma City Bombing, and the violent break-up of the former Yugoslavia, but the 90s were a fairly tranquil time compared to the 80s where instead of having two superpowers staring each other down with their nuclear arsenals, there was one superpower and dozens of smaller brushfires in a post-Cold War era. What I do find curious is why they couldn't have shifted the setting one year ahead to 1996. At least someone could squeeze out an Independence Day reference.

Man, I really don't like that I'm now old enough to see shit I remember first-hand getting reanimated and used as a relate-able puppet by the Mouse.

There was also the first attempt to bomb the World Trade Center in 1993 and one year earlier, the Rodney King riots. And for 1996, I agree, it could also squeeze a Mission Impossible reference as well since the movie with Tom Cruise was released the same year as Independence Day.

I'm surprised they didn't included also Bruce Springsteen's "Streets of Philadelphia" for the soundtrack.

And Timcast didn't enjoyed Captain Marvel movie.

Plus the fact that the 90s had a neverending commercial-free OJ Simpson trial; and that the Columbine and Heath shootings (along with the Oklahoma bombings) would kickstart other national and international disasters that would occur from the next decade to today, such as 9/11, 7/7 bombings, and also the Sandy Hook, Parkland, Paris, Las Vegas, and Boston massacres respectively. Plus soccermoms and evangelical Christian groups (precursors of SJW's of this decade) would blame these tragedies on video games (i.e. Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, or Pokemon) and musical acts (i.e. Korn, Marilyn Manson, Cannibal Corpse, Cradle of Filth, Dying Fetus, Anal Cunt, Slayer, Eminem, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, DMX, Busta Rhymes, and Insane Clown Posse).

Like for fuck sake, can Captain Marvel at least a reference Silence of the Lambs or Independence Day (as to what you mentioned) or anything related to Tiger Electronics like a Furby or something?

You know, I sometimes wonder what the MCU would look like today had Disney not bought out Marvel in 2009.

Captain America: Civil War could have been a much different film as Feige wouldn't have been able to run to Bob Iger to spin Marvel Studios off from Marvel Entertainment to escape Perlmutter's oversight. Also, Marvel could theoretically release Hulk movies since Universal has the distribution rights.

It probably wouldn't exist because one of the reasons Marvel embraced the Disney purchase is that it allowed for a parent company to take care of the budgetary end of things. Making and marketing these movies are insanely expensive, and Marvel would have had an insane time absorbing the costs that Phase One underperformers like Hulk, Thor, and Captain America incurred. And I know that there is a lot of reason to dunk on Disney, but under its tutelage, the MCU has become the most financially successful film franchise of all time. If they didn't have Disney money, do you think they'd be able to make a $170 million Guardians of the Galaxy movie? A $200 million Black Panther movie?

nostalgia
that's it
people eat shit up because MEMBER DUH 90s

the only thing worse than MEMBER DUH 90s is MEMBER DUH 80s
just the nostalgia masturbation alone makes me give this movie a hard pass

I'll take 80's over 90's.

As dated and overused as the 80's can be, there's a charm where I can't stand much from the 90's in hindsight. Worse fashion, trends, lame movies, bad music.

I’m just wondering because if you put aside Marvel Studios, Marvel Entertainment has been lackluster under Disney. I honestly do see Marvel Entertainment splitting from Disney, who would keep Marvel Studios.

What value would Marvel Entertainment have if they break off from the company that owns their most famous creations?

The movie's greatest sin is it was kinda boring. Yeah it had a few gurl power moments where I rolled my eyes but j think that's just an instinct brought in by Current Year. Had this come out in its exact form ten years ago I wouldn't have even noticed.

The biggest problem is Captain Marvel herself. And it's not even she's bad, she's just so fucking bland. Brie is an absolute flatline in this movie, which disappoints me because she does have a lot of range. She looks like a teenager running around in Tron cosplay. She has no identity, no personality, no arc. Every other character in this movie is far more interesting, even her Stronk Black Single Mom friend.

There was legitimately more emotion and character arc between Fury and that Skrull guy than I've seen in a superhero movie since, well, probably Endgame. Movie should've been about those two.

I'm still shocked it made just under 500 million. Most of that overseas of course. I get the feeling you're going to see the box office make a massive drop next weekend. Because at the end of the day it did about as well as Ant Man which, while not a failure, is not exactly promising considering how Marvel/Disney has been trying to promote the character.

He only fucks dogs fam

Adam was defending dog fuckers. Which is sad. I still like his content but at least he keeps his gay furry shit separate from his content.

Since Age of Ultron, most Marvel movies are incredibly front loaded, making 35-40% of their domestic gross opening weekend (Black Panther being the exception). If it has a big drop, it will probably be in line with other MCU films. Where are you getting this idea that it's doing about as well as Ant-man? It will more than likely outgross both Ant-man movies (domestically and globally) by next Sunday after 10 days in wide release. This is going to perform much better than Ant-man. It's going to make at least $325-350 domestic.
