What's funny is that those old CoD games did an insanely good job at being diverse while actually being good historically accurate games.

In Finest Hour you played as an African-American and had a female Soviet sniper as a teammate.
And both were historically justifiable, even. COD was good about that without putting it front and center. Best things about the early CODs was that they did a pretty good job showing the Allied war effort from multiple perspectives without it seeming too forced.

You can tell Battlefield V was made by a corporate marketing team because instead of having a design philosophy they checked every possible box to satisfy every possible opinion: It's realistic but it's also woke; it's historical but it's inoffensive; it's hardcore but it's also casual. Instead of finding nuance it maximizes any quantifiable element: Graphics shinier, sound louder, guns shootier, skin darker, story more melodramatic. It's the most neanderthal fucking business strategy conceivable.

I remember in Red Orchestra 2 and Rising Storm, they had a very nuanced and unobtrusive take on diversity of characters. Even though all the player models were relatively indistinguishable within each faction (that kind of being the whole point of standardized military uniforms), every player got randomly assigned a different set of contextually triggered voice lines that played a big role in distinguishing their "character" on the battlefield, as your character was constantly vocally reacting to in-game conditions and stimuli. If you were playing on the American side, you might get the voice lines of a deeply religious Southerner, or you might get the voice lines of a no-nonsense Midwestern farmboy or an irreverent working-class New Yorker. If you were on the German side, you might get the voice lines of a youthful Bavarian Catholic or a grizzled veteran landser with a dark sense of humor, among others. And so on for the Soviets and Japanese. Lots of different authentic regional accents within the different languages and a variety of personalities reflected in the various voice line sets.

and they chose the developers for the game based on the diversity of their hair colors.

And this is the real reason why we get shit like a woman singl-ehandedly assaulting the germans heavy water production center in Norway. If Dice wanted to highlight the role of women in combat in WW2 then there are plenty of real examples they could have gone for. Women snipers on the eastern front is a very famous one, but there were also plenty of women in the french resistance, amongst Tito's partisans in yugoslavia, in the greek resistance. Then there is the Warsaw uprising, an event that is so insane that it sounds like fiction, which had a women as one of its leaders. They could have done any one of these and it would have been in line with their need for wokecred while still being 100% historically accurate. But none of the things I listed are well known in the US and thus its harder to sell.

They wanted something close to saving private ryan or band of brothers for the US market. That means sherm.. eh cromwells pushing through hedgerows (arras and steel bridge), euro city turned to rubble (rotterdam and the rotterdam #2 map). Oh and stopping hitlers a-bomb (narvik and that other one). Then just toss in some women even though they never took part in any of those battles and if you get called out for it cry sexism.

I'm also fairly certain that part of the reason for including women was to sell more cosmetics. But they ditched that thanks to the backlash.

It's pretty funny watching EA pretending to be woke and concious of social issues when they're campaigning to break the law to sell gambling to kids in belgium.....and pretty much everything they've ever done, ever.

Even the English had some women that trained and fought alongside partisans, but they were too lazy to look that up. No cyborgs though, unfortunately.

I think the major issue is how they presented it. The first trailer with the woman was put out half a month before E3, showing the upbeat and colorful gameplay experience people wanted of Battlefield, on the back of the actual grim history of war with a promise of realism.

Going through the 'my daughter' idiot's reddit posts, half of them are about accuracy of gun rounds down to a fight-by-fight basis; they know their historical shit. It's what 'fun at the expense of accuracy' entails that confuses him. Picking up ammo in a plane mid-air is fun over accuracy, so is healing by proximity to a medic bag.

The actual E3 trailer was grim, and if you even managed to make out the women among the nobody male soldiers, they were all dressed alike. The only real mention of a woman of importance was the clip of the bridge, and that was far behind front lines and could've been a unique story about resistance; not leading the charge with a bat.

Had they switched the two trailers, the strike would've been less blunt. "Here is world war 2", half a month later, "and here is Battlefield as you know it; silly and cinematic for all the wrong reasons". That aside, what I've heard the game is just fucking boring, and the controversy lasted longer than people's interest in the game.

I can’t wait for Battlefield: Civil War where we fight to free the troons from heteronormativity

Also Abraham Lincoln has tits or something

I'd play the shit out of a first person shooter that allows you to play as a Yugoslav partisan or an eastern front sniper. Make it ridiculously brutal and punishing for the slightest mistake, make an accurate and compelling single player mode with player freedom in the various maps. Sounds like it'd be fun

Notice the "WHITE MEN WHITE MEN WHITE MEN" quote that is spun as more of the ebil mushogynurd bigotry the stunning and brave team faced in their quest to put the first wammen in a game in history....but was actually a reference to the fact that "white man" was a censored term in battlefield V chat

I like how in their Sisyphean task to create an inoffensive historical shooter, EA produced the most divisive and offensive major release historical shooter ever.

Easy is the name of the game now. Omaha beach is a short 100m Sprint without any risks in the latest CoD after all.

Since @CrunkLord420's tapered off with the stock updates, I'd like to point out that EA stock has effectively halved in value since this summer:

EA will never go bankrupt thanks to FIFA. Holy fucking shit there are so many dumb eurotrash whales who pour their entire salary into cardpacks.

But eventually I think that's all EA ever will be. Sports Games, Battlefield and mobile and that's basically it. No more big expensive products, just dopamine stimulators to get the most out of degenerate gamblers. That's where they were heading anyway.
