PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Many questions remain after a driver steered his car through a crowd of protesters Saturday as they started hitting his car.

The incident at SW 4th and Salmon happened during a protest for Patrick Kimmons, a man shot to death by Portland police September 30. Kimmons, 27, was shot and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died. "A gun was recovered near Mr. Kimmons, and multiple firearms were recovered in the area of the crime scene," officials said October 1.

The demonstrators gathered in the streets to demonstrate against police using deadly force.

During that demonstration, a man driving a silver Lexus drove through the crowd. He had a green light to make the turn but the walk sign was on for the crosswalk. Protesters began hitting his car and someone got in front of the Lexus.

Video captured by Brandon Farley shows the driver inching forward, getting clear and driving away quickly. He stopped less than a block away, got out, looked at the damage to his car quickly, then got back in as protesters arrived and again began hitting his car.

The driver, who spoke with KOIN 6 News but did not want to go on-camera, said he got out of his car earlier and asked protesters to move. But, he said, they grabbed him. He got back into the car, which is when they began beating on his car and smashed his driver's side window.

The person in front of the car was trying to lift up the front end as the driver was trying to get out of the area.

The driver said there is $3000 damage to his car. He called the police to file a report after he left the area, which police confirmed.

KOIN 6 News has not been able to talk with any of the protesters who were in that area at that time.

No one has filed a police report against the driver, and no charges of any kind have been filed at this point.

PPB Sgt. Chris Burley said officers were monitoring the protest. Asked why police didn't step in when protesters went into the streets and affected traffic, Burley said the bureau "weighs the ability for people to gather to practice their First Amendment rights to freedom of speech and assembly, as well as the impact it places on the rest of the Portland community. Throughout this event the police bureau was monitoring the crowd."

Anyone with direct knowledge of this incident is asked to contact Portland police.

I seriously don't understand how anybody could live in a city in close proximity to these autistic chimpanzees, and not be brought up on mass murder charges.

If I had to deal with these shitheads, the bodies would be stacked like cordwood.

this is why we need to get rid of pedestrian right-of-way laws. the road is for motor vehicles, and your body is your personal property. therefore, you are responsible for what space your body is occupying. the only time you should be in the road as a pedestrian is if you are abiding by the relevant traffic signals and crossing at a designated area. anything that happens to you in the road and outside of those circumstances should be your sole responsibility.

i remember during trump rallies in 2016, they liked to block ambulances that were trying to remove people from the riots they incited. why do these people's lives matter? you're blocking a fucking ambulance. get the fuck out of the road.

Just a reminder that the piece of shit these people are protesting for shot two other people. Of course police are going to shoot a man with a gun who doesn't just drop it, especially if others have been wounded.

On another note where the fuck were the police during this? You're supposed to contain these people so innocent bystanders driving by don't get caught in the madness.

If I remember right the mayor gave a stand down order about these protests. Not sure about the quality of the source, though, but Portland had that Occupy ICE bullshit where the mayor held off as long as he could.

Digging the Yelp reviews, though, didn't know you could review your mayor. Could use some fresh ones, I think.

I'm not sure what the statute is in Oregon, but other states you can drive through protesters if you fear for your safety. So it's kind of ironic that by screaming at drivers and beating on cars they're giving the drivers legal justification for plowing through.

Portland's soylord mayor is famous for telling them to stand down whenever leftists are throwing a tantrum. The feds had to be sent in to defend ICE employees a couple months ago because the local fuzz wouldn't lift a finger.

"Peaceful protesters" throwing shit at/hitting cars....back in my day that was just called a riot.

"Lets protest police gun use by assaulting innocent people!" That is a bold strategy cotton let's see how it plays out.

Seriously what is wrong with people these days. Why are our police and community leaders letting this happen? Why are they allowing people who illegally (because permits are oppressive?) block traffic and Fire/EMS/Police on calls allowed to free reign. We live in a fucking society with rule of law, not some shit hole anarchist "country".

"Protesters began hitting his car"

That should automatically just give drivers the right-of-way to run down people who do this because it's a threat of violence.

If you have to pick between dirty hippies and feds, maybe this story will help you decide.

Dunno what his long term gameplan is, but I suspected souring relationships with feds and trying to please people who never put money into the city is just a road to disaster.

Imagine the outcry if right wingers acted this way with no charges being brought to them...

Fucking rats. Trump should just send in the National Guard during their next chimpout when the Supreme Court rules against sanctuary cities.

Portland’s former mayors were insane (Vera Katz in particular comes to mind) but they wouldn’t have stood for this shit.

At least the Tea Party nutcases cleaned up after themselves. Leftists love leaving biohazards.

I think a lot of them are afraid of the social media backlash.

Social media was a mistake, hell "smart" phones are a mistake. Giving all normies internet access in an instant killed online discourse. It used to be that everything you held dear was shat on by others from your political views regardless what they were to religious views even if you were an atheist. Now everything needs to be tip toed around like if everyone is a god damned toddler and things are now either "good" or "bad" in a binary system. This lack of nuance has crippled the rule of law and turned the US from a "A government of laws not of men" to "A government controlled by the outrage machine (and corporations who control it)".

Foolish younger me thought the Duke University La Cross team case was an outlier not a sign of times to come.
