Maybe my perspective is warped because I'm old as fuck, but when I was younger nobody really made a living as a "full time artist". People certainly made money off of their work, some made quite a bit, but I cannot recall off the top of my head a normal everyday person in the fandom who hedged all of their bets on art. Everyone (at least the people I associated with) had a day job and just made money on the side by moonlighting as an artist.

I don't know, then again the fandom was objectively smaller and all that crap so there weren't as many marks and suckers to take money from, and things like Patreon didn't exist.

I'd argue it more has to do with the mentality you now see all over the internet where people who want to get rich quick while doing little hedge all their bets on internet money making in some form. You see this with streamers, youtubers, and whatnot, even though the only way you'll end up a self made millionare with news articles about how rich you are is if you're at the very top of the site, which is hard to do. Instead of "work a day job somewhere and do art on the side for extra cash" it's "I'm going to just draw...wait my car broke down again I need money!"

Relatively unknown kink artist. Got the usual treatment; agree to do a kink once and get swarmed by a gang of 25 people commissioning them to oblivion and back. Used to be down with Renard Queenston and co, which basically means too busy nursing their online persona to draw like a normal artist. The impressive part is that they managed to waste away 35 times $50-60 instead of using 4 of those to refund two-year overdue refunds. Two god damn years and "taking a part-time job to refund people".

They could've drawn one 2-3 hour drawing every 10 days and have emptied their queue at this point.

I love when they refer to the industry. I commissioned someone in the actual industry having worked on series you'd know: I got 3 "sorry" messages because it took 2 weeks and not 2 days, the prices were justified, and they actually worked. Fandom artists have no discipline, use muh feelies as excuses, and think it's okay to just not work because they don't feel like it. Oh and the good ol' "I only draw for people who'd give me exposure" instead of just, drawing as paid and getting a reputation as dependable. I also love how the idiot begs for money in the bottom.

It just shows, that if a furry with decent/professional grasp on art would just need to sit down, make a portfolio, and do some small design projects with companies and they'd be making a lot more than what people that pay them for porn could give them.

They can literally make a decent living if they investing into that. It's unappealing to them because it makes them next to nothing in the long run, always struggling to meet the deadline of those bills.

It's not quite that simple as getting even a basic job as an artist is difficult. Companies are fickle and there are countless other people who can do your job better, so it easier to carve a niche and be free from corporate shackles.

That being said, furry porn will never be a long-term solution unless you're extremely popular.

10-20% goes to taxes (usually 13% so save 20% to be safe) -- I never see about 30% of my own income due to tax, medical coverage, etc.

We have no health insurance -- You're married, your partner's coverage includes you unless he's failing to provide.
We have no paid sick time -- You work at your own pace, and art is usually only started after receiving payment. Part of why we see some artists taking commissions and never finishing them.
We have no work mans comp -- Must be tough being able to take a break every 10 minutes to stretch your legs, arms, etc.
We have no vacation days -- See: no paid sick time
We have no job security -- Is the drawing horse dick with huge veins industry not booming in Trump's America?


A bit :powerlevel: but as a salaried adult who works 40-60 hours, making the same amount every paycheck- get a new fucking job if you're not satisfied.

As of about five years ago, evading taxes is no longer possible if you use PayPal and make $20k a year at the minimum. They are required to automatically report income to the IRS with a 1099-K form. Patreon also requires you to confirm your identity and sign a contract agreeing that they will send a form to the IRS if you make $630 in a year on their platform.

Most big artists are likely filing taxes and just not talking about it. Unknowns are probably still tax evading because they likely don't know shit about it. You're not taught how to handle taxes in school, and self employment taxes are another ballpark altogether. I'm sure there are some artists who are doing the bare minimum to survive and avoid paying taxes who don't use Patreon, but they're likely a minority.

I’d be surprised to find a furry making 20k off their art per year. The actual amount they make is probably closer to 12-15k and even then I’m being generous.

Not to :powerlevel:, but I know quite a few who do. $20k a year is not a lot, that's about minimum wage with 10-12hr shifts. The more popular ones are making double to triple that. A lot of "artists" in the fandom don't, but if you draw porn, sell your soul and draw extreme fetishes like scat, and have a relatively appealing style (to furries), you can easily support yourself off the fandom. It has a lot of people with very loose pockets.

Hol up hol up. So are you saying... furry artists should get a day job and merely supplement their income with their artwork? Unless they end up in such a position due to popularity that they can fully support themselves with only an art career?

Honestly, yes. Working for the fandom is not financially rewarding and you're dealing with autists constantly. Unless you've got a strong following, doing just art is financially stupid. As you can see from places like A_B, a lot of artists in the fandom also have a shit work ethic. They're the ones perpetually in a state of emergency, financially irresponsible, and shouldn't be running their own business. The current mindset of the internet though is that anyone can be self employed, anyone can be famous, and anyone can make it big.
 
I'd like to see the artists with good work ethics be able to maintain independent, full-time work doing art, but that's never going to be something that a majority of furry artists are going to be able to do.

I'm sure some very invested, serious artists have set up LLCs for their furry work and been able to treat it as a small business. Non-furry artists are able to do this sometimes and I've spent a lot of money buying art from people like that and I'm not the only one.

I agree, unfortunately furries would rather throw money hand over fist at artists like Jailbird or Starfinder because they're popular, work ethic be damned.
 
I can only hope that with time the legit artists with good business practices will become more well-known, but it seems doubtful. Even if the good artists do get famous though, there will always be more demand than supply and shitty artists will always try to meet that demand.
 
I’ve heard (but can’t confirm) that an artist called Fek actually makes a living off furry porn, like six figures a year, but that said most furry artists seem to be like the one I knew a few years back -

They announce that they are a full time furry artist, yay! And commissions are open!

.... and then limits themselves to 8-10 $60 commissions a month, not because they have a full time job or can’t keep up but because they spends most days - by their own admission - hanging with friends or laying on the grass with the boyfriend watching clouds go by (and in both cases not doing art).

I’m sure that being a creative person is challenging as it is, but when your a shiftless dreamer it just makes getting the work done harder. And furry has a lot of shiftless dreamers.

Fek is one of very few animators in the fandom so he rakes in substantial money, he's also not a massive tool like Jasonafex.

What you said really hits the nail on the head though. Most of them have romantic views of being an artist, don't pull in a lot of money, and spend more time playing Overwatch or going to parties than working. They lack the drive to treat it like a genuine job.

The majority of them live in California, and from what I learned, a lot of the furries I meet at cons and IRL there will try to claim they want to be more responsible or they will actively try avoiding being responsible.

:powerlevel: For a small bit here on that subject, I had moved out to Cali for only 2 years to attend art classes on site, the one guy that I knew as a furry gave me a place to stay. Lives with his parents still to this day, while I was there, he at first had many excuses as for why he did not want to get a job for a long while, especially that he was much older than me and not in school. So I was living with an actual neet that somehow has help from his other furry friends to go to furcons every year, get commissions, and live comfortable as fuck. I left after those 2 years of being there to go back home to continue school.
 
So here's some spicy furry drama and this time in a foreign language. Apparently there's waves going around in the Asian furry circles about someone getting busted selling porn doujins in China. The cause is rumored to be someone getting back at said artist for having overdue commissions, proving that lazy furry artists aren't just a Western thing.
