He then sets out to debunk the idea that AAVE doesn't have grammatical rules which is not an claim that I think I’ve ever heard anyone make. He claims that it doesn't make it any harder to understand which at first I thought was merely questionable, but then at one point he cites a study which proves that it is! The study involved showing children a picture of Cookie Monster watching Elmo eat cookies then asking them, "who be eating cookies?" The white kids said Elmo, the black kids said Cookie Monster, because in AAVE “[some nigga] be [doing shi]” is primarily a statement on that nigga’s characteristics and secondarily on his current actions which means he was just lying when he said that AAVE has no impact on understandability. He be lyin’.
At another point he makes the brilliant argument that I basically also say “we wuz” since I say “we were” and “he was” sometimes. I guess that this guy says “I suck off little boys” because he has probably said all five of those words at some point in his life.
