I will be waiting to 1.0 to see if it's worth a damn, did EA for the first game back in the day and it felt like eons before they finished the game and kept having to restart save files, ruined the vibe.
Story described as seasonal, EA launch will be like a full season of TV, more updates will continue the story
Concerning
Protag is silent, unlike BZ
Thank God, but I imagine all the voiced side characters will be made to be insufferable / girl bosses.

"We'll add a cool time capsule Dark Souls mechanic!...."
>they scratch it and all the ones you find are from devs with concept art

I don't usually side with the big corporations, but goddamn, Ted Gill must have some blackmail on someone or be slipping out some well-placed bribes.

He somehow convinced a judge to not only give him back control of the studio he was criminally mismanaging, but to reinstate his golden parachute bonus too. The first thing he's gonna do is retire all the lazy, do-nothing management that started this mess in the first place.

Unless Krafton appeals this and gets it overturned, Subnautica 2 development is basically fucked.
No, its just that he duped Krafton into signing an ironclad contract by showing them the game they wanted to see, and when Krafton's own legal team told their boss that the way he was trying to force Gill out was in breach of contract, he ignored them.

Always listen to your legal teams, Kiwis. You're paying them for a reason.

Subnautica 2 development is basically fucked.
It was fucked from the moment they started working on the sequel.

Below Zero showed us all that Subnatuica was a fluke, as it is often the case, and that the devs have no idea why people liked the first game.

Au contraire. They knew exactly why people liked the first game, and they resented the players for it. They wanted to make some deep and engaging story-driven game, but the players demanded more atmospheric horror and exploration. In the end, Subnautica turned out great with what little story it ended up having, and Unknown Worlds hated it.

Seeing the disaster of Below Zero's development play out in real time with the developer updates and backtracked promises, story, content, pricing, etc. should have caused such negative word-of-mouth as to kill the IP and Unknown Worlds. Unfortunately, I and many others enjoyed the first game so much that we fed the monster for the sake of finding out that the game was exactly the pile of shit we feared. A good sequel simply isn't a reward any of us should expect for enriching a bunch of spoiled faggots who overtly refused to acknowledge that no one plays Subnautica for the sake of being beaten over the head with the personal politics of a Redditor.

Everyone's collective hatred of Krafton is going to keep this game afloat. They're a shitty publisher whos time has long past. For fucks sake their Dead Space successor Calisto Protocol was a fucking disaster. I think the game is probably gonna be all right. Survival slop games are probably one of my favorite genres to pass time.

What you think of the long dark?

Like the good little goyslave I am, I preordered subnautica 2. So far, I've put 4 hours into it, and Its fun enough. Some critiques I have is that all the biomes that I have visited have similar color palates. I liked that in the first game, biomes like the kelp forest and grassy plateau were close to your spawn point, but had notably different palates. In 2, it feels like all the close biomes are yellow-orangish in color. there are defiantly more visually striking biomes in the game, but I think that a bit more variation off the bat would be nice. Also, I have ran into like 1 big hostile fish, and it just kind of looks like a recolored squid shark from BZ. Doesn't help that its in like 5 different biomes as well, unlike the first game that had different hostile creatures for each biome. Also when I died in the thermal zone, I could not for the life of me find where my shit was, no beacon or nothing. I like the gene editing stuff though, reminds me of PREY in a sense. I especially enjoy the dash upgrade, helpful for getting around. I'm going to keep playing, but those are just my initial impressions.

I have the same complaint. The ground is much more cluttered and realistic compared to the first one. The cartoony style in 1 made it much easier to find your way and spot resources.

The game already sold a million copies, damn

A friend and I have been playing it after we got off work. It is... okay. Not super bad so far. I feel it is lacking the draw that made you get sucked into the world when playing the original.

I'll see how the remainder of the game goes.

I hate the processor is SN2, It takes like 4 minutes IRL to craft a fucking plasteel ingot. I understand that your supposed to go out and collect resources while it crafts or whatever, but It just feels like a unnecessary timer. I like the big squid leviathan though, It was as scary as a reaper IMO, though to be fair, I couldn't get a good look at it from my hiding spot. Although every time it moved or did some big move my frames started dropping fast, but its movements looked pretty fluid. There's 1 or 2 cringe "muh capitilisim" lines, and a few annoying minority accents, but overall the voice logs are adequate.

Played a pirated copy for about an hour and a half, feels like below zero with how much you are bombarded with voice acting and non stop audio logs everywhere. You have an AI companion thing now, dozens of audio logs in all the ruins that are all over the place. PDA is also a non-diagetic hud pop up now instead of a physical thing like in the first game. You also didn't get the audio logs auto playing in the first game. It's bad enough that I had multiple times where multiple voice lines would be overlapping. Doesn't seem to be drawing me in like the first game but again I only played a bit, giving it the benefit of the doubt, but after below zero I'm not hopeful. Also every character I've heard from has been a woman, haven't seen any corpses, don't feel isolated or alone because of the ruins and voice acting everywhere, and the alien hivemind virus thing plot seems pretty cliche if it doesn't do anything unique with the tree thing.

Performance is also terrible, as one would expect from ue5

Thanks to everyone for sharing their first impressions. I'll check it out in two years (when Unknown Worlds claims it's "finished"), then another two years after that (when they've shat out the final bug fix and QOL improvement a month after releasing the next Subnautica slop installment that promises to be more like the first game).

This is why we can't have nice things, so many mouthbreathing cretins with no pattern recognition ability.

Instead of looking at Below Zero and being wary of the sequel, they line up to gobble the slop, no critical thinking involved.

The game has allegedly been in development since 2022, it launched in EA 4 years later, and as you said, it will need at least an additional 4 years to arrive at an acceptable level of quality.

That's 8 years, barring any delays, to develop an inferior copy of the original. I bet they'll labor to make the game actively worse during EA and not listen to any constructive feedback, since they're so smart and talented and know best.

It's no wonder Western studios are getting shut down left and right and developers are being laid off by tens of thousands.
