A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Happy Mother's Day to all KiwiMums on here.

(Even though Mothering Sunday is nowt to do with your mum!)

Sending love and understanding hugs to those on here for whom today is a struggle, whether you've lost your Mum, lost a child, or for whatever reason you find today difficult .

I have just been presented with a cup of tea made by my youngest that is cold and looks like Horlicks due to how much milk has been put in it.

I will raise it in memory of my Mum and my babies who didn't get the chance to experience a proper cuddle, and do my best to pretend to enjoy to drink it as if it is the nectar of life itself.

To keep the balance of the thread, I pledge to do my best to do a really good racism in my local Greggs.

This is adorable. You can train them gradually with a colour chart.
More than I got anyway, nobody remembered.
I sent my mum flowers, and I’ll call her later. Happy Mothering Sunday to everyone.

Happy Mothering Sunday to you.
So sorry your lot forgot.

We're doing absolutely hee-haw today and that's how it should be.

We're having a quiet one. I find it a struggle. My son would be 12. So we will keep busy today and do some cleaning and have a quiet evening.

That said I have nothing but respect for all of you mums on here. You're all wonderful.

This is what annoys me the most, the laughing over 'beans on toast' as if that's what the middle class englishman comes home from work to although tbh every chef I know makes even worse poverty food choices as they're 100% spent when basic staples like pie and mash or fish and chips are a surprisingly rounded meal for macros.
Beans on toast is a naturally healthy combination because plant-derived proteins come in two groupings and we need both. And pulses and grains such as this provide you the complementary sets.

I have always found it bizarre that some make fun of beans on toast. Firstly, it tastes great and secondly, you can easily add a little side to it to round it out, like a poched egg or a sausage or something. Beans on toast rock.

I've attempted to train them over the years, I even have a special mug with the colour of my preferred shade of tea on the inside.

She is 16 now, so I've resigned myself to a life of milky brews now if I can't be arsed to do it myself.

I lost my mum years ago, but am lucky to have the best mother in law in the world. We are going round there later and I'm going to take over her kitchen and make a huge roast pork dinner.
It's very rare that she gets a meal cooked for her, so I hope I don't fuck it up. The hardest part will be getting her to sit back and relax while I fumble around in her kitchen.
Enjoy your day everyone. Spoil your mammies, life is short.

I was in the US not so long ago and could not believe how expensive food was. Practically everything was double the price in dollars compared to the price in pounds here. Plus there's sales tax on top. For example the cheapest 8oz pack of butter I could find was $5.49+tax. I can still get a pack for £2 in Aldi and it's probably better quality.

The exchange rate has tanked. It used to be like 1.8 dollars to the pound. Now it's like 1:1 isn't it?

1.30USD to 1GBP at the moment.

Food prices in the US are highly variable, from what I remember of my visits there. I'm given to understand food in california is quite cheap, even though the state is expensive overall.

In my time in the USA I found that slop of any kind tended to be cheaper than in the UK but good stuff was harder to find and more expensive than in the UK. Land of extremes in many ways.

So it might depend if you were shopping in Walmart or one of their "posher" places. If you're used to European food standards, good chance it was the latter.

Of course I could just be out of date.

I was there for a week or so and the only reasonably priced food I found was in run-down Mexican places, where you could get breakfast for under $10. Everywhere else was ridiculously expensive.

I will say when in the States, my state is Texas, and food prices are pretty much the same as here. The dollar conversion last time I went was just disgusting, honestly. My in-laws came over to Edinburgh in the summer last year and were really surprised at our prices, but also at the quality. Quality in the UK has taken a suicide drop due to margins and costs. I live near a very famous tourist trap, and as an accountant, I would ask the owners, "How's it going?" They are forced to pay high staff costs, and get rinsed in tax. I told my father-in-law, who is exceptionally clever, has had a successful life, and he was horrified. The costs we put on businesses make California look tame. I have just chatted casually with American finance people, and the number of times they say businesses pull out due to taxes and regulations.

The decline over here in just the first 3 months of the year would make any civilised group stop and rethink. However, we are mimicking our Canadian cousins and just speedrunning.
