I'd say a more pressing existential threat to the world is a country who currently has nuclear capability with a history of waging unilateral wars of aggression against its neighbors. Thankfully there's no country like that today and we're effectively preventing one from springing up in Iran.
Its seems to me the issue is more one of ideological differences. The common story that seems to be a threat to the world is when one powerful government says: "These people will be our subjects for us to do what we want with, afterall, its what they and their fellow members of this economic zone voted for," but they forget they happen to be adjacent with an "Our nation identifies as being the governmental extension of the grander entity that is our culture and ethnicity" style government. Then it turns out that the government that can't justify its existence if it sits idlely by when its people are being persecuted ends up watching their people slowly get more and more persecuted by the economic zone they're trapped in without their consent.
The real shame of the pattern is that the story has become SO common I've lost track of just how many wars I'm describing with the above. Its at least 5, although only 3 super notable ones.
Ultimately I blame the US Civil war for the whole problem, it tainted the whole democratic template with the damaging idea that sub-regions of a democracy can never be allowed to self-determine.
