Consoomers / Consoomer Culture - Because if it has a recogniseable brand on it, I’d buy it!

lol fuckin' wat?!?! There's 5k+ physical releases? Holy shitballs! I had no idea; I thought the majority of the Switch's shovelware was digital-only. Damn, manufacturing those must have gotten cheap in the last few years of S1's lifetime.
I was also amazed by that number tbh. I thought it would have been just south of 2,000 myself. But I found multiple sources that quoted a number around 5,000 so I decided it was probably correct.
Switch collections are extra disgusting due to the red spine color.
Agreed.
He's the organized kind of hoarder, though, with everything neatly shelved and probably has some autistic way he places them, not the deranged hoarder type who has literal buckets of shit and piss lying around and some rooms he can no longer enter because they're full of garbage.
Some could even call him a collector tbh. I'm not going to bat for him but he definitely doesn't seem to be the common hoarder.

There are some good games for the Switch, but there are not 2,900 of them. Maybe 100-200 if you want to include compilations and reissues. The staggering majority of that collection is probably dog shit. Who knows how many "download code in an empty case" there are.

I agree as most consoles actually have 150-300 good games max and the rest are meh to bad.

An acquisitor, possibly the purest type of consoomer. He just has the money to do what autism and a few of the weaker ocd traits are telling him to do.

There’s people with poorly maintained collections, usually they get old or go nuts and their stash of vintage cinema junk becomes unrecognizable trash. I like the definition of collectors being people who can tell you about their stash. That doesn’t make them immune from being nut jobs. But there’s an attachment to the objects involved. Atleast some type of knowledge about the things or what it represents or a childhood attachment or some feeling of whimsy.

This guy is building a library of games that he won’t play and isn’t even thinking about saving them for posterity. And who would on a system that isn’t going to be remembered with the same nostalgia as older consoles? Comic book collectors laughed when people bought all the art covers of the death of supergirl because there were so many printed and were being bought by people who weren’t really into comics, it was designed to have no resale value and attract those who didn’t know better.

Does this still count even though he’s selling all his Nintenslop?

This sounds like someone making a joke. Not a genuine 'I am selling my collection' post. Just looking at his channel he seems like one of those people that genuinely like nintendo but will still rage bait and fuck with the fans. Kinda like guptill.

Update on this, though didn't check if same guy:

They write: "Alot of people were very angry when I posted this at 2400 Switch games. After alot of soul searching I've recommited and I'm up to 2900 Switch games now. are we more or less happy with this development?"
I wonder if they realize theyre advertising to the world they have no woman in their lives when they post this kind of shit.

I feel like console fanboys and the "console war" people are some of the worst consoomers on the planet. Mindless brand-loyalists who have attached themselves to some of the most obvious sinking-ships and yet continue to sperg out about how amazing their plastic box is and how great it is to run games at 15 fps.

PC Master Race people also have some similar problems, although in my opinion are a bit less cringe because they tend to take it less seriously as well.

I haven't read all 544 pages of this thread, are they mentioned here? Do they have/need their own thread?

Probably. Noteworthy posts with more upvotes than the average get a little green :winner: icon next to their post number, and arrows pointing left and right that will jump you to the previous/next post with that same award. You could skim the thread a lot more quickly only looking at the highlighted posts and see the content without most of the chaff.

(And if you give Null twentybux a month you can view versions of threads consisting ONLY of the highlights.)

Thanks for explaining the best way to CONSOOM thread content in the most efficient way possible.

I would consider making a console wars thread, but I'm not really sure it would be a good idea since I'm new here and I'm not massively versed in the dumbassery that is console wars shit. I'm also not sure it would be funny or interesting enough.

The Console Wars are also long over, you've missed the trend by like a decade at this point.

I do still see some HILARIOUS sperging from time to time, especially with how frequently Sony and MS seem to be shitting the bed over the last few years, and these people are as stupid as they ever were, but you're mostly right, it's definitely died down.

The announcement of the Steam Machine definitely brought the retards out again for a while.

Had to upgrade my desktop PC for Windows 11 a few months back and it got me thinking. I bought my PC off eBay ~5 years ago for $300. I got it because I'd gotten into The Sims 4 and my laptop was burning my lap at that point. Over the years, I've added components and swapped out old ones as the need arose. I'm actually glad I went with the cheap option rather than a kitted-out gaming rig. I've spent years making it my PC. No one else has it. There's a sense of accomplishment that comes with buying something without all the bells and whistles and adding your own as you need them. I added those pieces by hand and troubleshot to make sure they work properly. It can be tedious and downright infuriating if you bought a defective part and don't know it (took several furious hours and a trip to MicroCenter to find that out).

A while back, I came across a YouTube channel (I forgot the name) where a girl preached about how bad overconsumption was. Thing is, she had a lot of videos showing off her seasonal wardrobe and makeup. Something I learned a long time ago is to stock up on practical things you like. If you find a pair of pants you like that fit well, get a few pairs. Don't go hog wild, but having a repetitive wardrobe is fine. I wear the same stuff year-round, excepting boots and coats. I found a purse that I absolutely love about 9 years ago. I always make sure to have a spare for when the one I'm using inevitably dies.

It's a bit rich seeing a woman flip-flop between decrying overconsumption and showing off all the makeup she has. All makeup will inevitably be flushed down the drain or thrown in the trash. Food also gets flushed down the drain, but only after it's fulfilled a purpose that humans need to survive.

I learned how to build PCs when I was in middle school and have been doing it myself for a while, now. I find generally that it's actually been a great anti-consoom skill; the amount of people I've been able to save from spending way too much on a PC they absolutely do not need by offering to build them one that'll work just as well for half the price is fairly impressive.

The PCMR consoomers are usually people who buy prebuilts or retards who would just waste their money on something else if they didn't happen to be into games, imo. Though I guess with midrange parts inflating in price things might be a little different.

When I was active in the space almost everyone I interacted with either did it because they were a genuine hardware freak or because they were poor and building a PC was the only way they could reasonably afford a gaming machine. Even most of the people with the 2k monsters (back when a good midrange build was ~500 usd) would readily admit they had saved up to finally build their dream rig or built it with a specific need like MSFS or work.

My dad's an IT guy, so part of the fun is just having some good father-daughter time.

The stanley cup stuff has to be the most blackpilling consoomer object-of-desire recently.
There's only one water bottle I've ever shelled out a substantial amount of money ($35) for:

This thing is a fucking unit. It's sturdy and can take a beating. Got two of them in different colors, but that wasn't a consoomer thing. It's just under half a gallon and helps me remember to drink enough water.

If it was pre 2010 then I could understand buying a prebuilt computer. But there is no excuse for buying one in the current day other than a bog standard office computer. Pcpartpicker will flag any problems and will literally tell you the options you have. There's countless tutorials for literally every single step in any form you want too. I don't get who the fuck is so lazy that they would rather overpay by thousands instead of doing it yourself. Is your time really worth like £100/hour?
