What's the point of bombing Kharg Island and then announcing that you did so if you don't already have Marines or whatever swarming the place? Feels like it gives the IRGC time to prepare. Might it indicate that physical occupation is less likely?

The island is small enough that hypothetically it could be held. I mean you'd have to station some sort of naval detachment in order to provide sufficient anti-air defense, but it's just a strategic chokehold that could be taken. It is quite tiny. It would be much harder if the United States bombed it, which we could do but it would set rebuilding back decades.

I am not an officer but I think you could probably take the island with a battalion of Marines. Airstrikes would take out defenders and any shore-based support. You probably would only need a company to retain possession. The problem as I stated before is that those forces would be under constant artillery and done attack.

It didn't look to me like they were destroying the runway it looked like they were ACKing some launchers or structures in the "median". But it wouldn't suprise me if they did. The US can use helos or landing craft, we have whole units that specialize in repairing tarmac, and destroying the runway means Iran can't reinforce/resupply via the air.

It's a single strip (runway), no median. There was nothing on the runway by the looks of it; runway denial.
Dropping a few JDAM's on it from some distance is a lot less risky, but ripping a few Durandals over it would have been far more kino.
