Joe was the architect of the huge public shitshow with Mallory's family, the sole architect of the retarded move to NYC, and the sole architect of the throuple shit. Joe was the engine of insane spending, and shirking his job that should have been a steady paycheck for them, that left them broke.

Mallory has agency in the situation, but the effects of Joe's abuse have included separating her from her family and undermining her finances, making "the situation" much harder to leave than it would be otherwise.
