She's a terrible woman and I wish people would stop going "awww pooner" on her.
She's just as vile, smug and obnoxious as Sideshow. And is a worse human being than he is in some respects. He doesn't try to hide his raw ambition and awfulness behind a fake Aw shucks humility the way she does.
That's a beautiful sweater right there
It goes well with her fluffy Ziggy Stardust mullet look though, ya gotta admit. And those butchy pooner pants with lots of zippered pockets. (Pooner fashion heaven.)

I tried image searching on that sweater the last time she wore it, to see if it was one of those outrageously expensive designer eyesores that Sideshow likes to status signal with. But no luck. It's just another hideous sweater that someone pitched into the thrift stream for someone like her to find and wear "ironically".

So her new book is completed and hits the shelves in June? Oh boy. Already up on Amazon! (Which I can't archive for some odd reason.)

From the author of the national bestseller Women’s Hotel, the irresistible and wildly entertaining story of one woman contending with age and friendship—a narrative that reads like an homage to Nora Ephron’s Heartburn.

Sixtysomething, twice-divorced Barbara is at a crossroads. In the midst of her emotional uncertainty, she looks back on the dissolution of the nine best friendships of her life, in hopes of figuring out how to optimize finding her tenth, and hopefully last, best friend. Barbara is acerbic, opinionated, and wrong about many things, but she also doesn't shy away when she's at fault. The turning point of her predicament comes from Barbara’s choice, in friends, between (too-young) Caitlyn and the (unsuitable) Other Barbara. Will she repeat the exciting mistakes of the past, or will she try a new kind of mistake for a change? She feels like an out-of-season Scrooge who is unexpectedly, and all at once, surprised and entirely transformed by the possibility of joy.

For readers who loved Bobby Finger's The Old Place and Elif Batuman's Either/Or, Meeting New People will feel like a long-lost companion—Lavery at the height of his storytelling powers. It is an unforgettable novel from one of our most inventive and brilliant writers.
Jeebus. Sounds "unforgettable", alright.

The twee cover is 'A Late Riser's Miserable Breakfast.' By Carl Larsson painted in 1897. Apparently his niche was depicting upper middle class Victorian life, using his wife and child Brita for models.

I'm always amazed how women tend to excuse women and then get baffled as to why men excuse men.

I excuse no one.

Mallory is just terrible, yet people go "poor confused pooner". Like no, she's just as dreadful as she appears.

I really dislike Mallory. Joe is his own kind of terrible but Mallory betrays women and tries to hide it.
Regardless of whether she's a good person, Mallory is still a victim of narcissistic abuse by Joe, and that's the angle about her that most interests me. Joe was the architect of the huge public shitshow with Mallory's family, the sole architect of the retarded move to NYC, and the sole architect of the throuple shit. Joe was the engine of insane spending, and shirking his job that should have been a steady paycheck for them, that left them broke.

Mallory has agency in the situation, but the effects of Joe's abuse have included separating her from her family and undermining her finances, making "the situation" much harder to leave than it would be otherwise.

Gotta disagree with this, I don't see Mal as ambitious AT ALL. Her shitty website? The Stopgap? The way she promotes her writing? Her "aw shucks" posture comes from a lack of ambition, lack of confidence, and is partly just a leftover tic from the twee blogging days.

No sorry I can't accept that. Ironically, you're taking Mallory's agency away from her.

She is genuinely dreadful. Just another shitty person in the grand scheme of things.

Ha, on reflection, I only said "Mallory has agency in the situation" as lip service, I shouldn't have said it. I think Mallory is a weak and passive person who won't change her situation because she lacks the soul power. She'll sit there forever, impotently seething at her mean ol' dad and pretending she enjoys "having sex with men" to the "bafflement" of her "wife."

Camarón que se duerme, se lo lleva la corriente and the corriente is Joe.

That's the frustrating thing about people like Mallory - she has agency, she just chooses to be passive. It's annoying and I hope she dies.

Also, nigger.

I think Mal actually passes here— but only as the maitre’d from Ferris Bueller:

She’s a masochist, which doesn’t pull my heart strings at all. All I feel is disgust and contempt for that. Her fake humble routine is massively irritating. She’s just as snobbish, thirsty and ambitious as Sideshow. She’s just careful not to show it as much.

Beyond literary pretensions, their obviousness is the main thing they have in common — Joe’s heartbroken he is neither enfant nor terrible and will never stop trying to shock you with that deviant behavior, and Mal more-or-less tattooed “I h8 my preacher daddy 😠” on her impressively ruined body, which is definitely not a temple!! It’s honestly pretty funny.

Her "aw shucks" posture
Is pure conceit and arrogance. Mal loves presenting her personal Sodom and Gomorrah like it's Lake Woebegone. "Tee hee! Just throupledom things! Isn't my husband's bastard adorable? Here's some gay bathhouse etiquette tips! My masochism and my deviant lifestyle are as normal as normal can be! I'm so happy. And clever. (Don't forget humble!) Don't you agree?"
But then my sister's Barbie got melted. The culprit was never found.
Kek. Nice! I've got a Barbie crime tale too: One of the defining moments of my young life was when I found my Barbie's severed head impaled on a stick over a grave containing her dismembered parts in the woods behind my house. There were some likely suspects, and the murder weapon of a small hachet was found. But no one was ever questioned, or charged, with the crime.

Masochist is probably putting it too high, but I have long maintained Tard Baby is getting exactly what she wants from this relationship. She gets to abdicate responsibility to her very own Mr Rochester, yet be the indispensable helpmate, and acquire social capital through him.

Did anyone check Skipper’s iPhone?

Her ambition was to be a handmaiden.

As a child it was to be one for the moral Christian cause but as an adult she switched to being a handmaiden for some notion she has about woke queer tranny commie progressivism. Luckily Joe had been desperately seeking to acquire handmaids his entire adult life, there just had not been any interest in the role until Mal.

At least working at assisted living gives that impulse some benefit to others.

Yep.

Mal "assumes the position" daily for Sideshow (and now LaLa and even Rocco) because there's something in the abuse and humiliation that is satisfying to her. Maybe it reinforces her view of herself and punishes her the way she feels she deserves. Or it provides a much needed stimulation that penetrates her numbness. I dunno. Behind that simple/humble trans man persona she's constantly selling, she's got complicated baggage and weird desires.

But at any rate, it's a sure thing that she's a self hating, self destructive mess and her own worst enemy. If she had any self respect or sense of self preservation she would not be the ridiculous third wheel pooner in the BPT with a fast diminishing shelf life.

She's a cunt. That's what she is. She's really loathsome, anyone whose dealth with Mallory-types know what I mean.

It is important to each member of the throuple to be Different. That is how they flipped feeling like gonks in their teen years.

They are not maladaptive, homely, shunned. They are Fascinating! Superior! Daring!

Offline, such people are annoying, exhausting, and obstructive. But online, a hairy-shouldered Kerouac kween of freaky foodies posting gaggingly bad yet haughty recipes for disaster is hilarious.

The pubes-faced he/him bingo caller in a girly sweater writing lady books is an E. F. Benson character who makes a quirky complement to the freaky foodie.

The penis-gobbling pseudo-lesbian birthing broad running Rachel Spangler marathons is the boring one of the bunch but is the key to revealing the other two at their most ridiculous.

We get all of this for free.

The only downer is poor Rocco. But maybe he'll grow up to be the Little Edie of his generation.

Besides the passivity, I feel disgust and contempt because she cannot write, yet she is stealing a spot that could go to someone with actual talent and real stories to write. It's frustrating seeing her and the long conga line of fail DEI clown college grads getting their writing published while there are SO MANY others (including other college grads) who CAN write and who CAN tell compelling stories and make compelling arguments.

Look, man, my two E.F. Benson avatars here would NOT make a ka-werky comment about Sideshow's fud. Not even Miss Mapp would stoop to entertaining Sideshow with a comment. The Padre certainly would not deign to cast an exorcism, Anglican style, on the throuple.

Even Quaint Irene would turn her back.
